Fighters purses

As you'll be aware I bang on about fighters purses. With this in mind, there's a good article in BN this week interviewing Tyler Denny. He only went full time as a pro in 2021 as he didn't make much money from boxing so worked as a plumber, and it was only one of hid sponsors covering his wages that enabled it. He only earned £2400 for his English title fight, but is getting £76000 for his fight with Cash this weekend.

While 76k is a lovely purse, after everything it will be like 40k, and if he only fights once a year, it's hardly life changing, if he loses he is back to 2k purses, the boxers life

very true, he said when he won the English title he lost loads as he'd had to pay so much out, hence working full time as a plumber.

Is £50-75k about right for a European title fight in the UK - say the Chamberlain-Massey fight last Saturday, is that roughly what you'd expect? Or a bit less

If it's live on a big show, 75k is about right, top end for a challenger.
The purse for a WBO challenger in the Calzaghe, Hatton era was 50k in USD so like 25k minus expenses.

A lot of these boxers use sponsor money to get through training camps and post sparring partners. Unless they’re there ones being chosen as a sparring partner then they make some money.

£75,000 minus:
25% to his manager
10% to his trainer
a few hundred for a cut man
probably 3% to the EBU then all the training expenses... roughly £45,000

Don’t forget the tax man. Unless he’s set up a limited company and paying himself dividends, he’ll be losing another 25% or so.

the leading category of paid sparring partner may be the 6'7+ giant type who gets brought in to emulate super heavy opponents. hard to find many guys this size who can box decently and have experience, as there are hardly any people of this size in general or in boxing. 6'8 mariusz wach got loads of work as a sparring partner around the world, the 6'9 ukrainian ebu champ who was in usyk's camp for fury was also in with povetkin and other top euro fighters, doing more as a sparring partner than in his own career. 6'7 helenius been around too.

southpaws are only like 1 in 10 and can get more work too. malik scott spent years fighting pretty meaningless 8 rounders, but was sparring top fighters around the world much of the time.

outside hw id think it would be tougher to carve out a niche and separate yourself as a paid sparring partner. there are more boxers around those sizes to at least somewhat match profile of the opponent. in a strong boxing country like uk probably plenty of decent local guys and top amateurs to work with who would do it for the experience rather than pay

Michael Moorer talks about being broke now. He said is manager took 33.3%, promoter 25% and trainer 10%
Then Moorer had to pay all his training camp expenses and the hotel bills for his team.
Then taxed at around 39% too, he was being fleeced.

By six figures so we mean £100k or closer to like £500k.

what do managers / promoters / trainers take now in terms of %
Managers 25 percent but some
Will do you a deal 15-20 percent
Trainers 10 percent up to 10 grand purses then you can negotiate higher or lower .
Like big names fighters like aj ain’t gonna give their trainer 10 percent of 50 million they will just arrange a set fee .

Promoters shouldn’t be taking anything they are ment to make money of the tv money and the gate money and sponsorship
Etc

As someone with absolutely no clue, I'd be amazed if he made £500k. I know he's chief support and it's a big bill but even so, he is probably the opponent money-wise relative to Hamzah. Six-figures or near enough though for sure.

I wonder if Maxi has said what he made for the Kambosos fight? £80k? I think around the time he beat Straffon/defended against Walsh there were talks of Ryan Garcia coming over to fight him very briefly, I'm guessing that would've been £100-200k or something.
