Don't call me Fatton
By PAT SHEEHAN

RICKY HATTON has blasted critics who insist he is overweight by roaring: Don’t call me Ricky Fatton.

The light welterweight attempts to take the IBF world crown from holder Kostya Tszyu in Manchester in June.

And Hatton has gone into training a month earlier than usual for the MEN Arena showdown.

But it has not stopped the critics giving the Brit stick for his waistline as he prepares for the fight that will define his career in front of 22,000 fans.

Hatton, 26, always balloons above the 10 stone limit when out of training.

It has earned him cruel nicknames like Ricky Fat One, Lord of the Lunch and Daddy of the Dinner.

Hatton, though, reckons all the jibes about what he eats are not worth a carrot.

He blasted: “I read the criticism but I am only the same weight as what I normally am. I have always been a fat kid — even from an early age.

“I am the kind of person who puts weight on just going through a drive-in burger place before I even eat the meal.

“It is just the way I am. But right now I am eight or nine pounds lighter than usual because I have started my routine a month early.

“OK, it is more of a struggle for me to make the weight than most. But that’s what gives me the big advantage on fight night.

“A lot of people say the weight is my big problem but I know I have one of the best nutritionists in the world in Kerry Kayes. His record speaks for itself.

“People wonder what kind of condition I am going to be in but Kerry has me down to around 10st 8lb even with the fight a month away.

“If you can find a boxer who will have the stamina and work-rate I have, throws as many punches as me and can still feel fine then I would like to know what diet he is on.”

Hungarian Tyzsu, who is based in Australia, has been tempted to defend his IBF title in Manchester after he was offered a mammoth £2million by promoter allegedly. The fight will take place at 2am on the Sunday morning to satisfy the demands of American cable TV company Showtime.

Hatton added: “Obviously it is vital for me to be in peak condition and I can promise you that you will see a fighter in prime condition. Because of the importance of this fight, I’ve been back in training for three weeks now.

“I have extended my usual pre-fight training schedule by a month. It is all geared to going 12 rounds and seeing that IBF belt wrapped around my waist at the end of what will be a great night for my fans.

“The bout is 10 weeks away and I am already in the shape of my life.”

What is this all about? Is he just going through his normal routine for this fight? In at the gym, hop over the bar, do the body work, home: all at a set time?? Aren't pictures of Tsyzu taped to all the ringposts and mirrors? What is he doing to inject the extra hunger needed to even compete against this legend?? Methinks Tsyzu might have got to Ricky already. My initial prediction of Tszyu KO 2 is looking strong at this point... :-?

I like the bit where it says he goes over 140 between fights! :x I'd say he goes over 170 between fights!.. :o :o :o .. perhaps even more!.
Hatton vs Woods anyone?>....

Really though Ricky shouldn't be surprised at the criticisms about his weight because he is quite simply fat too often between fights and this is an unproffesional way to treat yourself when you are a sportsman and it will surely cost him against Tszyu I think.

Ricy Hatton says,

“I am the kind of person who puts weight on just going through a drive-in burger place before I even eat the meal"

The key words here are "before I even eat the meal"

Should a World class professional Boxer be eating 'food' like deep fried, crappy burgers and salt filled fatty chips etc?

Just an observation.

Yes he should be eating those foods - high protein good, high fat not too good but so what you burn it off when you train.

No ones seen Rickys body between fights, so we don't really know about his physical state from his neck - I've said this time and again

Whens Ricky not been in excellent condition? Im not even a fan but lets be honest

Does the average fast food burger and chips have much protein? I doubt it. Plenty of salt and fat etc though.

Eating them just now and awhile I am sure will do you little harm, but if it's a weekly event I imagine is not too good for you.

However, I agree with you as a Hatton fan, he does allways turn up in excellent condition.

Yea if you get a Double XL Whopper it'll have plenty of protein, yes theres plenty of fat and salt but so what, as long as he goes the conditioning work and doesnt eat too many BK meals in prep he'll be fine. But with the amount of cardio work (12-15 rounds bodywork sessions) he does a couple of burgers a week is fine.

I'm not even a Hatton fan but I will defend him on the aspect of conditioning as hes 1 of the best in the game in this aspect. However defense and technique are different matters

"What is he doing to inject the extra hunger needed?" The problem is it's not needed!

Its one thing to put on some weight between fights but to become quite simply FAT between fights as Ricky does is definately going to become a hinderence. He will be spending a significant amount of his training just losing weight rather than honing himself to a peak... he's got away with it so far but against Tszyu I think he will be caught out.

Evander Holyfield used to train on Burger King, lou duva used to give him hell about it. Mind you, I think he stayed in shape between fights, as I never saw him looking podgy.

In which case he should be eating world-class curries. I recommend the New Mughlie. Which I've probably spelt wrong.

Fat manc lol.

Don't shorter guys usaully have no problem losing the weight though?

I read that fast food has lack of proteins too.

Plus this is a title shot so he should be doing better since it's against the no 1 in that division.

In respect of ballooning weight between fights, Hatton reminds me of Matthew Hilton.

God help Hatton if he gets a bad injury that prevents hin from training for six months, That would finish him.

The only reason he hasnt struggled yet is because he has kept busy.

Does anyone know what shape Hatton is in as we speak.

The "melonhead" phase was a few weeks back. is he likely to have shed any of that at this stage of the training?

With the intensive training regimes boxers go through (especially Holyfield) they would burn up all those calories anyway.

The saturated fat and cholesterol is a different matter though.

I still say eating crappy, fatty deep fried burgers etc is going to do more harm than good to a professional Boxer in the long run.

tony adams played half is career with 20 pints of guiness in his stomach... and was the backbone of the national team and one of the premier clubs in europe....

that doesnt mean drinking pints of guiness is good... it means he could have been a lot better if he hadnt drank so much.....

same with the shit diet.....
