Vergil Ortiz Jr vs Serhii Bohachuk fight expected for August 10

Vergil Ortiz Jr will still be returning in August, and Mike Coppinger of ESPN.com is reporting today that as rumored, Serhii Bohachuk will be his next opponent.

Ortiz was slated to face Tim Tszyu — who was forced to withdraw — on the Aug. 3 Riyadh Season pay-per-view from Los Angeles, but Ortiz vs Bohachuk won’t happen on that Terence Crawford-led card. Instead, the fight will headline on Aug. 10 in Las Vegas.

Top Rank and ESPN do have Luis Alberto Lopez vs Angelo Leo set for that same date, if you’re wondering about competition for your eyeballs.

The 26-year-old Ortiz (21-0, 21 KO) didn’t fight at all in 2023 due to some health issues, returning on Jan. 6 this year to stop Fredrick Lawson in two minutes, 33 seconds. He followed that by taking six more seconds to put Thomas Dulorme away on Apr. 27.

Ortiz has moved up to the 154 lb division with those fights, though he’s had contract weights a bit over that limit.

Ukraine’s Bohachuk (24-1, 23 KO) is a good opponent and, like Tszyu, should make for an action-packed fight between two guys who pack some punch. Bohachuk had an upset loss against Brandon Adams in 2021 on the short-lived “Ring City USA” series, and has otherwise largely toiled on smaller shows promoted by Tom Loeffler.

The 29-year-old made his mark on a PBC show in March, beating Brian Mendoza by clear decision.

Gabriela Fundora vs Daniela Asenjo joins Ortiz vs Bohachuk on August 10th

Gabriela Fundora won’t be diving into an undisputed title fight with Gabriela Alaniz quite yet, as Camilo Zamora of DSPORTS Chile reports that Fundora will defend her IBF flyweight title against Daniela Asenjo.

Asenjo (16-3-3, 2 KO) has never actually fought at 112, instead spending most of her career at super flyweight and once challenging for a WBA title. Her last two fights have taken place at 118, where she beat undefeated Angela Lukas for the WBC silver belt and defended it against Victoria Torres Canul.

She weighed in at 116 for the Lukas fight and regularly makes super flyweight with room to spare, so weight shouldn’t be an issue here.

Fundora (13-0, 6 KO) burst onto the scene last October with an absolute mauling of Arely Mucino to claim the belt. When a showdown with then-unified champion Marlen Esparza fell through, she returned in January to stop Christina Cruz on the Jaime Munguia vs John Ryder undercard.

I’ve still got my fingers crossed for the Alaniz fight, but it’s good to see Fundora back in action after a one-fight 2023.

‘Next boxing superstar’ Vergil Ortiz meets Serhill Bohachuk on Aug. 10

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya has confirmed that Vergil Ortiz will face Serhii Bohachuk on August 10.

It’s a mouth-watering junior middleweight fight and will take place at the Michelob Arena in Las Vegas with Bohachuk’s WBC interim world title on the line.

Officials had been in talks a while ago to try to get the contest on the big Los Angeles bill on August 3, headlined by Israil Madrimov-Terence Crawford.

Ortiz was originally scheduled to appear on the show at the BMO Stadium against Australian Tim Tszyu. But the damage Tszyu suffered to his head against Sebastian Fundora, caused by a stray elbow in their fight on March 30, was not healed in time for him to start training, so while organisers tried to save Ortiz’s spot against Bohachuk, that fight will now top the bill in Sin City.

“That’s going to be a war, and for Vergil to become world champion at 154 and from there, the sky’s the limit,” De La Hoya told Boxing Scene. “Vergil Ortiz is the next superstar in boxing.”

Vergil Ortiz Jr. agrees 'multi-year' extension with Golden Boy

Vergil Ortiz Jr. has extended his promotional agreement with Golden Boy Promotions.

The 26-year-old Ortiz, who fights Serhii Bohachuk for the WBC interim junior middleweight title on Aug. 10, is among the promotional organization’s most valuable assets and strengthens their prospects in the aftermath of Jaime Munguia recording his first defeat and Ryan Garcia serving a year-long ban.

His contract extension is being described by as “multi-year."

“Me re-signing with Golden Boy is a show of loyalty, and it shows the mutual confidence we both have in each other that we will both bring each other success and to the top,” Ortiz Jr said.

“I want to thank Golden Boy and everyone there for believing in me, my dad for always making sure I’m at the top of my game, my manager Rick [Mirigian] for getting this deal done, and to all my supporters who enter this new chapter of my career with me.”

Oscar De La Hoya, the chairman and chief executive of Golden Boy and a former world champion at 154 pounds, said: “There is not a more dedicated fighter in the sport of boxing than Vergil Ortiz Jr, and we are incredibly proud to re-sign him at such an important time – right before his first shot at a world title.

“With this signing, Vergil is sending a clear message about his commitment and loyalty to Golden Boy and we will reward that commitment by working shoulder-to-shoulder with him as he becomes the next superstar of boxing.”

Ortiz, whose fight with Bohachuk is scheduled for Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay, had previously agreed to fight Tim Tszyu in August, but the cut Tszyu suffered in defeat by Sebastian Fundora delayed the Australian’s return to the ring.

He moved to super welterweight in January, having struggled to remain at 147 pounds because of complications related to his recovery from long Covid.

Golden Boy has unveiled the full undercard for Vergil Ortiz Jr’s August 10th showdown with Serhii Bohachuk. In addition to Gabriela Fundora’s previous revealed title defense against Daniela Asenjo, the show will see Charles Conwell and Kenneth Sims Jr return to action in separate bouts.

Conwell (19-0, 14 KO), who kicked off his GBP tenure by mauling Nathaniel Gallimore in April, meets New England club fighter Khiary Gray (18-6, 13 KO) at 154. Gray is an experienced B-side with losses to Spike O’Sullivan and Bakhram Murtazaliev under his belt and just one fight since 2021; he’s doomed here, but this is also an extremely quick turnaround by Conwell’s standards, so whatever.

The freshly signed Sims (20-2-1, 7 KO) ends a 16-month layoff against Jesus Perez (25-5, 18 KO) in his first fight since outlasting Batyr Akhmedov to earn the top spot in the WBA’s super lightweight rankings. Champ Isaac Cruz has a pending date with Jose Valenzuela and will presumably then have to face the winner of Ismael Barroso vs Andy Hiraoka, so this is a tolerable rust-shaking fight. Perez has never been stopped even when competing at 147, taking Alexis Rocha and Brian Norman Jr the distance, and is coming off a decision over JoJo Diaz.

I know Bohachuk got stopped by Adams but I'd still be impressed if Ortiz gets rid of him, Vergil one of most exciting fighters in the sport, it's criminal how he's not got a title shot by now, I know he's had health issues and inactivity but still c'mon he needs to be mixing at the very top now

he's a top lad too. I think it's his health issues mainly that got in the way of bigger fights. if tonight goes as planned i want to see him against a beeeg name

ya verg is always fun to watch and i love his mix of educated explosive punching. kills the body and the head. i think he should take apart bohachuk here, although his defense is average and might get tagged up a bit before he does it.

ya good fight, verg enforcing his type of fight a bit more, the body work is his best work, has boha moving back and stopping punching when he targets the body with the sharp belly jab and hooks. bohak landing plenty himself but not as clean, and also his punches are a bit too crowded for full effect

all competitive rounds, but ortiz is doing more each time. would like to see him mix his jab to the head and body a bit more. he isnt throwing it seriously to the head very often, though stabbing it to the body regularly. he started to mix it better toward the end of that round though
