So for anyone who managed to survive Magic mushroom fuelled French opening ceremony, this afternoon boxing kicks off in Paris around 4 pm, with the men’s round of 32.

I’m not really up on the amateurs apart from one or two superstars… anyone with any knowledge please post here - also team GB I only really know our man delicious, the next heavyweight sensation. Possibly. Although he may have to tangle with the fearsome Bakhodir Jalolov at some point.. Who is still an amateur while remaining a pro, which makes no sense at all

I like Jalalov a lot but his pro cv is abysmal, that along with the fact that I can't help but see pros going back amateur for Olympics as taking the piss makes me yearn for his beating

Might be an unpopular opinion but I’m all for the professionals entering into the olympics. Boxing is one sport where top amateurs are better than 90% of professionals (if not more)

I agree with you but the amateurs have got the upper hand in the olympics not the pros.

Be interesting to see if Jalolov retains his Olympic title despite being a 14 and 0 pro now. I've not known and of the few pros who went ad did or redid the Olympics, to have done so with success.

Pros returning to ams is utterly ridiculous and totally in keeping with the absurdity circus that is the Olympics.

tbh most of the olympians with pro fights havent really fought anyone in the pros. theyd be boxing a much higiher standards in the ams anyway, under actual am format, so i dont think them having pro experience really makes it unfair. plus they still have to go through qualifiers to make the olympics. several guys with pro fights didnt even make it despite trying

and a few world champs like ndam and ruangrong did return and lost handily

Professionals returning to the amateurs and competing in the Olympics is just another reason why I no longer follow amateur boxing.

eh, imo totally overblown issue. like mick said an 8-0 pro lost 5-0 earlier

most guys with pro bouts 1. dont have many and 2. have fought pro opponents worse than anyone theyd face in international ams, and they still have to qualify in amateur bouts to earn a spot in the olympics. its not pros throwing their hands up and boom they get an olympic spot.

the top pros to enter back into the ams have all failed to medal. ndam lost handily, ruanrong was stopped. women's pro world champs lost. ramla ali was beaten up first match in tokyo. even with jalolov his reputation is where it is mainly because his amateur dominance and not his mostly meaningless pro bouts

and the ams have always cases where you get older, vastly experienced fighters from cuba and eastern euro facing much younger greener opponents from else where anyway. except in those cases the older guys have built years of extra experience in the actual format they'd be facing the younger guys

He was a stalwart of Marist Boxing Club and is well known in New Zealand and Australian Am circles, as well as in his home of Samoa.

Scruffy bout, difficult to score. I couldn't tell which punches landed in the 3rd...

Must admit I'm not a massive fan of amateur boxing, almost feels like a different sport a lot of the time. Plus the blatant corruption is somehow even worse than the pro game, which takes some doing. I also get a bit annoyed when some fighters stay amateur for way too long and then nearly always end up having an underwhelming pro career as a result.
