Floyd Schofield vs Rene Tellez Giron and Gabriela Fundora vs Gabriela Celeste Alaniz planned for November 2nd

Gabriela Fundora and Gabriela Celeste Alaniz will fight for the undisputed flyweight title

Earlier this week, The Ring’s Jake Donovan brought word that top lightweight23 prospect Floyd Schofield will headline a November 2nd DAZN show against veteran Rene Tellez Giron. More recently, the WBA’s website revealed that Gabriela Fundora will battle Gabriela Celeste Alaniz for the undisputed women’s flyweight title.

The 22-year-old Schofield (17-0, 12 KO), who’d been tabbed to fight Ashton Sylve before Sylve’s brutal upset loss to Lucas Bahdi, got his first taste of Veteran Tactics (tm) in March’s disqualification victory over Esteuri Suero. He gets a more conventional but ostensibly much stiffer test against Giron (20-3, 13 KO). Though “El Bravo” sports losses to standouts Michel Rivera and Giovani Cabrera alongside a narrow majority decision defeat to Jose Matias Romero last year, he’s on a three-fight winning streak and successfully gatekept Karlos Balderas in 2019.

Fundora (14-0, 6 KO) is 2-0 this year after scoring an awkward finish of Christina Cruz in January and subsequently sweeping Daniela Asenjo on the scorecards seven months later. She’d long gunned for an undisputed clash with Marlen Esparza, but that fell by the wayside when Alaniz (15-1, 6 KO) outworked Marlen Esparza in their rematch to claim the three belts Esparza lost on the scales.

Honestly, solid little fight night here. It’ll go head-to-head with Robson Conceicao vs O’Shaquie Foster 2, but if their first fight was anything to go by, this is the more appealing show.

Bektemir Melikuziev fights David Stevens in the co-main event

As revealed last week, blue-chip lightweight prospect Floyd Schofield will face veteran Rene Tellez Giron in a November 2nd GBP main event at The Theater at Virgin Hotels

“I am beyond excited for my return to the ring as the official main event, and to show the world what I’ve been working on,” said Schofield, (17-0, 12 KOs) of Austin.

“My goal is simple – become a world champion. My opponent has measured up against some tough contenders and will be looking to steal the show, but we won’t let him do that this time around.”

“I’m so excited about this fight, like none other so far in my career.” said Giron. “Floyd Schofield, he’s just another big-name guy in my way to the top of the lightweight division.

“I will win, my preparation is always great, that’s why I just scored two big wins in my last two fights. I like upsets, I’m that guy that will take your heart. I’m a proud fighter of Mexico, I will win this fight for my country, I’m tough.”

It’s still a bummer that we missed out on seeing Schofield face Ashton Sylve, but this figures to be a stiff and watchable test against someone accustomed to flipping the script.

In addition to the previously announced undisputed flyweight title fight between Gabriela Fundora (14-0, 6 KO) and Gabriela Celeste Alaniz (15-1, 6 KO), the show will see super middleweight contender Bektemir Melikuziev (14-1, 10 KO) fight David Stevens (14-1, 10 KO) in a “WBA title eliminator” co-main event. Melikuziev is 5th in the rankings and Stevens is somehow 9th despite getting smoked by Joeshon James last year, so hopefully it’s not a final eliminator.

Darrius Fulghum (12-0, 10 KO) also sees action against Christopher Pearson (17-4-1, 12 KO) and Joel Iriarte (4-0, 4 KO) meets TBA in a six-rounder.

I had Schofield winning 117-110, he got rocked at end of the 3rd, he had to hold and even missed his stool when he went back to his corner, Giron had him down in the 11th as well, left hook, looked like a flash knockdown but Giron did hurt him with a right in the same round, all in all though Schofield dominated Giron, outboxed him and out fought him, might've made it easier for himself but fair play to Schofield he didn't mind duking it out and he caught Giron repeatedly with clean punches, Giron dangerous, game but made to look basic, still warning signs with Schofield's defence and willingness to trade

Schofield is very talented but his defense is a major liability.
