Josh Taylor expected to sign with Matchroom Boxing in the coming weeks
Former undisputed super-lightweight champion Josh Taylor has suffered back-to-back defeats after previously being undefeated and his chances of returning to the 140lb throne any time soon seem minimal. Now, the Scotsman will be hoping that he can turn his form around and appears to have made his first step towards a comeback, with whispers suggesting that he has signed a promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing.
After winning his first 14 fights, Josh Taylor was tasked with Ivan Baranchyk in the semi-final of the World Boxing Super Series, with the IBF super-lightweight title at stake, and ‘The Tartan Tornado’ became Scotland’s 14th world champion with a comfortable unanimous-decision win in front of his beloved fans.
Taylor would then bank a career-best win over Regis Prograis to unify the WBA and IBF titles before defeating Jose Carlos Ramirez for the undisputed crown in 2021 to complete a legendary run.
However, in February 2022 a surprisingly difficult split-decision win over Jack Catterall stunted Taylor’s progress, that decision being labelled a robbery by the vast majority of viewers.
As fans demanded a rematch, Taylor decided to vacate three of his four world titles and opted to defend the WBO strap against former unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez last June, where Lopez pulled off the upset and handed Taylor a first career defeat.
This year, Taylor and Catterall finally went toe-to-toe once again, with Catterall claiming a generously scored unanimous-decision win to level the scores and leave his 33-year-old rival secluded from the race for the super-lightweight marbles that he once held.
Taylor’s promotional deal with Top Rank has now expired and he has openly admitted that he is on the lookout for promoters in the United Kingdom to begin a ‘new era’ in his career, he told the Edinburgh Evening News.
“I’m going to suss out the market in the UK and just explore my options. I think it’s the right fit. I’ve been to the top but I’ve never really had a UK promoter back me and push my profile.
“So, at this stage of my career, I’d like to have that. I just need to get back to winning ways. I’m coming off back-to-back defeats so I want to get back chasing the big fights again. I still believe I’ll become world champion once more.”
Meanwhile, Matchroom Promoter Eddie Hearn staged the rematch between Taylor and Catterall back in May and recently hinted that he is on the verge of signing a former undisputed world champion,, amongst other high-calibre fighters, in an interview with The Stomping Ground.
“Two or three Olympians, former world champions, former undisputed world champions – a lot to come.”
Sources close to Boxing Social have since confirmed that Taylor is likely to sign with Matchroom in the near future, with a decision still to be made as to whether the East Lothian sensation will return to the super-lightweight division or move up to welterweight and campaign at 147lbs.

I want him to fight George Kambosos in a battle for the We Haven't Won A Fight Since 2021 Belt.
Have it in Oz with Bosh on the Undercard against Justis Huni.

Sadly at 33, his best days are behind him. It happens, it's not nice, but there you go.
That inactivity sure looks like a mistake now.
If Eddie does sign him, you have to wonder why?

His hope of a UK promoter pushing him is quite desperate. He acted like such an indignant shagsack after being gifted the Catterall win that at this stage he has as much chance of British treasure status as Pip Schofield.

Montana Love, Sergey Lipinets and Robbie Davies Jnr are all potential opponents.
“It’s difficult, Josh is coming off the Catterall defeat, so, you’d quite like to have a good fight and get a win and get momentum,” Hearn said.
“It’s tallying up whether you want that kind of fight, for the show, and tallying up what he needs for his career. You can’t just sling him in.
“We understand our obligation to bring fighters through at the right speed.”

He’ll no doubt sign the day that I post this but I’ve always seen Taylor as someone who will never sign with Hearn. I think there were rumblings at one point Carl Frampton would sign with Eddie after the immediate fall out with McGuigan and at the time I said no chance and indeed he never did.
Can’t put my finger on why I don’t think he’d go with Matchroom but just feels like the two sides don’t really marry up in terms of their personalities.

Mmmm Would you say an ex world champ needs bringing along , one would of thought its already happenned ,
However a jumped up DEROIDED little prick without his supply of eggs . who's ambitions ,and mouth , don't match his talent , could sure use a win against a former world champ who's seen better days , and jumping up in weight , , would give him some credibility in calling out Boots , Ortiz , and Eubank for the next 2 years and 5 handpicked fights , just enough for Eddie to get his investment back plus profit

On the way up Conor regularly was fighting guys from the weights below. Kane Baker is really a super featherweight/lightweight and was an early Conor Benn opponent. I remember he fought that French guy who put him down who was a genuine 140-147 guy (can’t remember the weight it happened at) and suddenly Benn was struggling.
It’s the same now he’s in between 153 and 147, that guy he fought on comeback was a genuine 153er and Benn was landing flush as hell on him but he wouldnt budge.
So I guess no surprise there’s murmurings of Taylor fighting Benn as Taylor isn’t long up from 140.

He was on one hell of a run.
Whatever went wrong - weight making, not training properly, overconfidence, or did things just happen so quickly he didn't master the basics? - I hope they can amend. He should've been able to beat Lopez and Catterall.

I can’t remember the condition he had now but I remember an interview he gave where he talked about not been able to do roadwork anymore due to an issue with his heel / Achilles (that part of the body anyway). Around the same time he seemed to lose them extra gears he had.

maybe he can be more comfortable at welterweight, and make some technical adjustments?
he clearly has experience to draw and and could possibly add to his game.
or, perhaps it indeed has just gone.
