Let's talk about the great Gene Tunney. I have seen some of his fight films on YouTube, and the guy seems to me like a fighter that was way ahead of his time.
He was a brilliant tactician and strategist, and a thinking man's fighter just like Sugar Ray Leonard.
Would he be a great boxer today?

If you were to ask the old-timers back then it wasn't that he was necessarily ahead of his time he was just that damn good. There was plenty of men who boxed like Gene Tunney in his time or prior. He just had more grit, conditioning and smarts than most.
Jesus Christ Almighty God bless you all

he was great and would be great in any era. there have not been many fighters his size or bigger (before or after him) who could move that well.

That's was the first my thought, when I saw him schooling Dempsey.

Great fighter, no question. And ahead of his time in getting out with comparatively few fights, and his health

Obviously an excellent mover, whether right or wrong, watching Dempsey v Tunney I thought that Dempsey was the one who was showing the more modern technique. Maybe it was because I was expecting Tunney to be more technical and Dempsey less technical.
