Larry Holmes vs Oleksandr Usyk

Could the Undisputed deal with another Lineal?
12 rounds.
12 rounds.
Usyk is definitely more athletic. Who had fasrer hands is arguable, but Larry's jab and 1-2 were more polished and much harder for sure. Usyk is a volume puncher, while Larry carried powah in a single shot.EdwardRevolver1993 wrote: ↑19 Jan 2025, 12:13 Fascinating match-up.
Wasn't Larry openly admitting, that southpaws are a pain in the ass for him? Or something along the lines.
Usyk won't be the smaller man here. Larry was, perhaps, a tad taller. But Usyk is arguably more fit and athletic. Larry had faster hands, but Usyk is pretty quick with his hands, too.
Stylistically, I can see this fight looking like Usyk-Fury. At least, in part. And it'll end in a competitive decision, I suppose.
I'm not ready to pick Usyk yet, but I like his chances here.
That's a good breakdown.DrDuke wrote: ↑20 Jan 2025, 19:59Usyk is definitely more athletic. Who had fasrer hands is arguable, but Larry's jab and 1-2 were more polished and much harder for sure. Very tough to pick. It's hard to go against Holmes' reputation. Yet Holmes had some holes. I can't see Holmes dealing with adversity, like he had done vs Shavers, Snipes, Witherspoon, if he had someone like Usyk in front of him instead of those guys with the success, which they had.EdwardRevolver1993 wrote: ↑21 Jan 2025, 06:31That's a good breakdown.DrDuke wrote: ↑20 Jan 2025, 19:59Usyk is definitely more athletic. And who're you leaning towards in this match-up?
Yeah, these mentioned guys were stylistically somewhat suitable for Holmes. The guy like Usyk (skilled, fluid, fast + a southpaw) will be a different preposition.DrDuke wrote: ↑22 Jan 2025, 01:12Very tough to pick. It's hard to go against Holmes' reputation. Usyk is a road warrior, he'd go to the States.EdwardRevolver1993 wrote: ↑22 Jan 2025, 08:07Yeah, these mentioned guys were stylistically somewhat suitable for Holmes. I also think the fight location could matter (in terms of judges). To fantasize just a little bit - where do you think this fight would've been held?
That's what I think, too. I'd say, Vegas would get the assignment.DrDuke wrote: ↑22 Jan 2025, 11:45Usyk is a road warrior, he'd go to the States.EdwardRevolver1993 wrote: ↑22 Jan 2025, 08:07Yeah, these mentioned guys were stylistically somewhat suitable for Holmes. And by the way, which versions of both would we take for this match-up? Usyk is 37 now. But I did like his showing in the 2nd Fury fight better than in the 1st. And it's tough to say he isn't prime (even if he isn't).DrDuke wrote: ↑22 Jan 2025, 11:45Usyk is a road warrior, he'd go to the States.EdwardRevolver1993 wrote: ↑22 Jan 2025, 08:07Yeah, these mentioned guys were stylistically somewhat suitable for Holmes. I meant best versions. Usyk is probably still in prime. Both at 37 Usyk wins easily.EdwardRevolver1993 wrote: ↑23 Jan 2025, 07:18And by the way, which versions of both would we take for this match-up? Usyk is 37 now. Holmes at 37 wasn't bad either. He was 37 when he was coming into Spinks fight (fights he arguably won) as an undefeated champion.
What do you think?
I strongly agreed because Holmes fought 15 rounders in his heavyweight title fights 6 times. Usyk would have his moments using his southpaw jabs, left hands and combinations in the early rounds, but Holmes would prevail by sticking his quick long left jabs, right hands and combinations to his face and dancing around the ring in the later rounds as the Easton Assassin would take a decision.keithmoonhangover wrote: ↑23 Jan 2025, 11:32 Holmes points for me. It wouldn't be an easy night for him. Usyk would come on strong in the later rounds. Be interesting if it was a 15 rounder.
