WILLIAM ZEPEDA-TEVIN FARMER REMATCH, OSCAR COLLAZO RING CHAMPIONSHIP DEFENSE SET FOR MARCH 29 IN CANCUN

William Zepeda and Tevin Farmer are set to run it back, while Oscar Collazo is set for his first defense of The Ring strawweight championship.

Golden Boy Promotions confirmed that a deal was reached for the Zepeda-Farmer rematch to headline a March 29 DAZN show from an unspecified venue in Cancun, Mexico. The sequel will come barely four months after their Nov. 16 meeting, won by Zepeda via split decision in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“Back for more,” Golden Boy stated through its social media channels. “William Zepeda and Tevin Farmer ready to go toe-to-toe AGAIN on March 29 in Cancun, MX for the REMATCH and the WBC interim lightweight world championship.”

While not yet announced, The Ring has learned that Puerto Rico’s Collazo (11-0, 8 KOs) will defend his RING and unified WBA/WBO strawweight championship against Mexico’s Edward Cano Hernandez (13-2-1, 4 KOs).

Mexico’s Zepeda (32-0, 27 KOs), The Ring’s No. 4 lightweight, entered talks for a rematch against Farmer (33-7-1, 8 KOs) once he was unable to proceed with previous plans. The unbeaten southpaw was in line to next challenge WBC 135-pound titlist Shakur Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs), but an injury forced him out of their targeted Feb. 22 date in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Stevenson, The Ring’s No. 3-rated lightweight, will instead defend his belt against Floyd Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs).

Zepeda, now fully healed, will return one month later. Given his run as one of the sport’s more active top-rated fighters, it is reasonable to believe that Zepeda—with a win—would be in line to next challenge the Stevenson-Schofield winner without interruption.

“We are fully committed to position William Zepeda to become world champion in 2025,” Jaime Picos, Zepeda’s manager, previously told The Ring. “It hurt to not be able to fight Shakur Stevenson on the big Riyadh Season show, because he has remained our focus.

“So now, we make the moves to ensure that opportunity is still in place after their next fights.”

Nothing is a given, however, especially considering their first fight.

Zepeda survived a knockdown to prevail via ten-round, split decision and claim the interim WBC lightweight title in their Nov. 16 clash in Riyadh. It came at a cost, however. In addition to the knockdown, Zepeda injured his left hand which left him in a sling and sidelined for the remainder of 2024.

Philadelphia’s Farmer suffered his second straight defeat on the night, though his stock soared in the aftermath. As much was the case in a hard-fought, unanimous decision defeat to Raymond Muratalla (22-0, 17 KOs) last July 13 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Both setbacks saw the former IBF 130-pound titlist far exceed expectations and where an argument was made that he deserved fairer treatment on the scorecards.

Zepeda and Farmer are once again joined by Collazo, who made history on the Nov. 16 undercard. He became the first-ever Ring champion at strawweight in a seventh-round knockout of Thammanoon Niyomtrong (better known as Knockout CP Freshmart to the cool kids).

Collazo, a 28-year-old southpaw from Villalba, Puerto Rico, floored Niyomtrong (25-0 at the time) three times to force the stoppage. The feat ended Niyomtrong’s eight-plus year stay as a WBA strawweight titlist, the longest active reign at the time of their fight.

A concession for allowing the unification bout was that Collazo had to revisit his already agreed-upon fight with Cano. That promise was honored, as the 27-year-old Mexican contender will enter his first major title fight.

Cano is unbeaten in his last four starts, but remains best known for his June 2021 knockout loss to then-unbeaten flyweight David Jimenez, now The Ring’s No. 9 junior bantamweight contender.

The fight was the last at flyweight for Cano, who returned to the 108-pound division before dropping down three more pounds to strawweight.

William Zepeda-Tevin Farmer II set for March 29 in Mexico

William Zepeda and Tevin Farmer will look to settle their unfinished business on March 29 when they meet in a rematch at Poliforum Benito Juarez in Cancun, Mexico.

The all-southpaw fight, which was announced Thursday by Zepeda’s promoter Golden Boy Promotions, will be contested for the WBC interim lightweight title, which Zepeda won in their last bout in November by split decision. It will headline a card that will be broadcasted live on DAZN.

Zepeda, 32-0 (27 KOs), of San Mateo Atenco, Mexico rose off the canvas in round four to win a split decision in the fight, which was only scheduled for 10 rounds despite having an interim title at stake. The margin of victory was just one point on two cards, 95-94, while the third had it for the same score for Farmer, 33-7-1 (8 KOs), of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

"I've trained hard for years to earn this world title, and I'm proud to get back in the ring and defend it in this highly anticipated rematch against Tevin Farmer,” said Zepeda in a press release. “The fans asked for it, and I'm ready to give them an even better version of myself. I'll leave no doubt in anyone's mind that I'm the clear winner."

“I was off for 3.5 years, and fighting him the first time was the first time I felt somewhat comfortable in the ring. Ring rust is real, but now it’s all gone,” said Tevin Farmer.

“Last time, I let him live and let him do more than I should have. This time, there’s no mercy. He’s not on my level, and on March 29, I’m not just winning—I’m making a statement. I’m going to show the world that I’m still A top dog in this game. Never doubt Tevin Farmer. Y’all should know that by now—I’m like a fly you can’t get rid of. I just keep coming back. Just tune in on March 29 on DAZN and watch me become a two-time world champion.”

BS's Lance Pugmire confirmed with Golden Boy's Eric Gomez that this fight will be scheduled for twelve rounds.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed to BS that the fight will be a twelve-rounder, while saying his organization didn't order the rematch because all parties were willing to make it happen.

"This is a natural rematch by popular demand. The WBC did recommend - there was no need to mandate the fight - the promoters negotiated in good faith. It is a twelve-round fight, both fighters are enrolled in VADA. It’s going to be a sensational event in Cancun, Mexico," said Sulaiman.

The winner would logically be the next in line to face the winner between WBC lightweight titleholder Shakur Stevenson and Floyd Schofield on February 22.

“The first time these two stars went to war, I advised everyone to not sleep on Farmer; and he delivered a terrific performance, knocking down Zepeda and giving him the toughest fight of his career,” said Oscar De La Hoya. “This rematch promises to be an even better battle. Will Zepeda be able to adjust and get back to his electric, knockout ways, or will Farmer do enough to win this time? This is must see TV for fans on March 29.”

OSCAR COLLAZO VS. EDWIN CANO ADDED TO ZEPEDA-FARMER CARD

As the countdown continues to the rematch between WBC Interim Lightweight World Champion William "El Camarón" Zepeda (31-0, 26 KOs) of San Mateo Atenco, Mexico, and former IBF Super Featherweight Champion Tevin "2X" Farmer (33-7-1, 8 KOs) of Philadelphia, Golden Boy announced the undercard featuring its current stars, rising prospects, and former world champions.\

The 12-round main event for Zepeda’s WBC interim title is set for Saturday, March 29, at the Poliforum Benito Juárez in Cancún, Mexico, in association with Cancún Boxing and will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN.

Making yet another historic return to the ring, Villalba, Puerto Rico’s unified WBA, WBO, and Ring magazine Minimumweight World Champion Oscar “El Pupilo” Collazo (11-0, 8 KOs) will defend his WBO title for the fifth time and his WBA and Ring magazine titles for the first time against Querétaro, Mexico’s Edwin “Canito” Cano (13-2-1, 4 KOs). The co-main event is presented by Golden Boy in association with Miguel Cotto Promotions and Cancún Boxing.

"I'm happy and grateful to have our fifth defense and first fight of 2025. I'm thankful to Miguel Cotto Promotions and Golden Boy for giving me the opportunity to showcase my talent in Cancún and connect with different fan bases," said Oscar Collazo. "We will make the most of this opportunity and show once again that we are the best in the 105-pound division in the world."

"I'm very happy to fight for a world title in my country," said Cano. "I'm very focused on giving a great fight."

On the DAZN broadcast, Joselito “El Huracán” Velázquez (20-1-1, 13 KOs) will face a soon-to-be-announced opponent in a 10-round flyweight bout. Making his Golden Boy debut, Robin “Robz” Safar (17-0, 12 KOs) of Las Vegas will take on Roberto Silva (13-3, 7 KOs) of Houston, Texas in a 10-round cruiserweight fight.

Opening the DAZN broadcast with a high-stakes women's bout, former three-division world champion and five-time titleholder Yokasta Valle (32-3, 10 KOs) of San José, Costa Rica, will collide with U.S. Olympian and former Unified Flyweight World Champion Marlen Esparza (15-2, 1 KO) of Houston, Texas, in a 10-round flyweight showdown.

Hoping for a big zepeda victory to keep that train rolling.

I think zepeda might be the funnest guys in boxing but I do suspect he is actualy a b grade fighter who was on a hot streak.

Shakur will have to smash farmer here for me to believe in him against shakur.

He is a beast. I just don’t know if he can overwhelm a sharp puncher.

If your going to be low power massive volume then you have to have a great chin as you move though the levels… he is a bit of a Nate Diaz (mma) without the iron jaw…

I wanna see him with shakure and Loma, would have liked to see him with 135 Haney..… but I think a tank, 135 Garcia or 135 teo would/would”v chinned him.

Farmer is tough but so obviously very injured.

If he were young you would have pulled him out rounds ago, but I guess Mabey his last chance he is gambling it.

Tough watch
