Tim Tszyu faces Joseph Spencer in Newcastle, Australia in April
Tim Tszyu looks to rebound from defeats against Bakhram Murtazaliev and Sebastian Fundora
Tim Tszyu is set for his ring return on April 6 against Joseph Spencer. The former champion from Australia makes his home country ring appearance, stepping through the ropes at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre in Broadmeadow, NSW.
Tszyu (24-2, 17 KOs) looks to rebound from two defeats in a row. In his previous fight for the IBF super welterweight belt last October in Orlando, the 30-year-old was dominated, dropped, and stopped by Bakhram Murtazaliev in the third round. Last March in Las Vegas, the Sydney native lost a split decision against Sebastian Fundora, as well as the WBO 154-pound strap.
Tszyu’s previous victory goes back to October 2023, when he scored a unanimous decision against Brian Mendoza and secured his third win of the year on home soil. Prior to that, he stopped Carlos Ocampo and Tony Harrison in the first and ninth rounds, respectively.
In his U.S. debut in March 2022, Tim Tszyu earned a unanimous decision against Terrell Gausha.
Spencer (19-1, 11 KOs) is riding a three-fight winning streak. The native of Grand Blanc, Michigan won two fights last year, taking a majority decision against Miguel Angel Hernandez and stopping Janer Gonzalez in the fifth round. In late 2023, the Frenton, Michigan-based 24-year-old scored a unanimous decision against Marcelo Fabian Bzowski and returned to winning ways.
In March 2023, Joseph Spencer suffered his first career defeat, a seventh-round TKO against Jesus Ramos on the undercard of David Benavidez vs Caleb Plant in Las Vegas.
The U.S. broadcast information is yet to be confirmed, with the event expected to air live on April 5 (ET).

Interesting fight.
Tszyu looked terrible last time out. Was that just the opponent or has he already peaked?

It’s a good fight for Tim. No disrespect to Joey but Tim needs someone outside the top 5!! He fought fundora to a razor thin decision, and he has acknowledged a bit of a preparation issue re murtazaliev……I don’t see other fighters lining up to fight him!. A good win here and then hopefully another and Tim will be back in the picture. A loss to Joey - and I expect Joey will test his chin - and any talk of world title talk will be over.

I read that Spencer’s team have protested over the 3 judges all being from Australia and that it breached an agreement between the camps.
Spencer’s team has threatened to pull him out if it isn’t rectified.
Surely they can secure a couple of international judges?
Michael Zerafa has volunteered to step in for Spencer if he pulls out, Team Tszyu will not go there.
But it is April Fools Day so take the Zerafa bit with a grain of salt. The rumblings about the judges were around yesterday though

Spencer’s right eye is BATTERED! It’s swelling up. Tszyu hurts him badly with a one-two. Spencer is in trouble. Both his eyes are wrecked. He backs Spencer up against the ropes and is pumelling him!!
In comes the towel!! Tim Tszyu wins in the fourth round!

The most surprising part for me was how average this Joey Spencer really was.
He was a pleasant and engaging bloke, but he is nowhere near championship level, and never will be.
Fans in Australia are getting really excited because Tim says he’s back, he beat up the milkman.

Quiet first couple rounds, not much happened, Tszyu stayed patient but started letting the hands flow more freely in the 3rd working the body and bringing the uppercuts on the inside, the finish in the 4th came out of the blue, Spencer was looking busted to the eye but Tszyu opened him on the ropes, unleashed to the head and body when the towel comes in, no complaints from Spencer

I’m not sure Joey is average. He’s got good hand speed and had built a decent record. Not up to the level of Tim’s previous opponents but not many are. Tim showed maturity and a few changes. He finished one round shorter than I thought he would. Let’s see if fundora gives him the rematch.

Fight Thurman, then rematch Fundora, and that’s him back back if he wins.
Dodge that Russian forever though… Nikita can fight him in like 10 years when he’s an old man.

And with his cavalier approach to defence, Nikita can get knocked out too

Agree 100%, poor Joey shat himself as soon as Tszyu started landing and was happy to see the towel come in.
He definitely needs a decent opponent before stepping up again.
He will never share a ring with Bakhram again if he wants to live a long and healthy life
