Terri Harper defends her WBO title against Natalie Zimmerman on May 23

Terri Harper will fight Natalie Zimmerman in a WBO women’s lightweight title fight on May 23.

The fight, which will be shown on DAZN, is set to take place at the Eco-Power Stadium in Doncaster.

Twenty-eight-year-old Harper, the current WBO champion, is 15-2-2 (6) as a pro and won her title last September when outpointing Rhiannon Dixon over 10 rounds. She also has wins against Ivana Habazin, Hannah Rankin, and Viviane Obenauf.

Zimmerman, 13-0 (3), is a 42-year-old German whose career has mostly been fought in her homeland. Her two most recent bouts, however, wins against Katerina Dvorakova and Orsolya Moldovan, took place in Spain. This fight against Harper will be the first time she has boxed for a world title.

Also on the May 23 show in Doncaster will be a lightweight fight between Maxi Hughes and Archie Sharp, as well as fights between James Flint and Haithem Laamouz, and Reece Mould and Lewis Sylvester.

Terri Harper vs Natalie Zimmerman and Maxi Hughes vs Archie Sharp set for May 23rd

Terri Harper’s first lightweight title defense will headline a DAZN show in Doncaster

After handing Rhiannon Dixon her first pro defeat to claim the WBO lightweight title last September, Terri Harper will headline a May 23rd DAZN show in Doncaster opposite Natalie Zimmermann.

Harper (15-2-2, 6 KO), a former super featherweight titlist who ran afoul of Alycia Baumgardner in 2021, came up short in bids for super welterweight and welterweight gold in the last couple years. A 2023 clash with the returning Cecilia Braekhus produced a controversial draw, while a subsequent showdown with Sandy Ryan saw “Belter” stopped in four.

The 42-year-old Zimmermann (13-0, 3 KO) poses zero threat on paper, boasting no wins over opponents with winning records.

The evening’s other major attraction pits Maxi Hughes (28-7-2, 6 KO) against Archie Sharp (25-1, 9 KO). Hughes is coming off a rout of Gary Cully for his second consecutive win since the William Zepeda debacle, while Sharp’s lengthy and fruitless spot atop the WBO lightweight rankings ended last July with a loss to Ryan Garner.

They sure gotta match Terri Harper carefully for her to keep a title. A 42yr old who only started boxing at aged 38yr seems a safe bet I guess.

Press Release

Professional boxing will take over South Yorkshire on Friday, May 23rd when GBM Sports takes over the 15,000-capacity Eco-Power Stadium - home of Doncaster Rovers FC - for a northern powerhouse card, live and exclusively on DAZN.

Hometown heroine Terri Harper headlines in a WBO World Lightweight Championship defence presented in association with Matchroom Boxing. She faces the undefeated German standout Natalie Zimmerman (13-0, 3 KO’s), who has battled her way up the rankings to become mandatory challenger for the Doncaster dynamo’s world title.

The prestigious WBO belt was for many years the property of Irish female boxing icon Katie Taylor. Harper (15-2-2, 6 KO’s) can expect a hard-fought contest with her overseas in front of a very vocal sold-out crowd.

Harper said, "I'm so excited and grateful for this opportunity. Stepping into the ring at the Eco Power Stadium in front of a sold-out crowd in my home city of Doncaster is one of those things you dream about as a kid.

“The people of Doncaster have backed me every step of the way, through the highs and lows, and now it’s my turn to give them a night to remember. I’m ready to put on a show and successfully defend my world title in style!"

Zimmerman said, “I want to thank GBM for giving me this opportunity. It’s been my dream from day one to fight a name like Terri Harper and now that dream is coming true. It’s a great honour for me to have this platform to showcase my skills against a fighter like Terri.”

The sanctioning body allowed for an easier title defense and the promoter likely has to pay less money for an opponent. Zimmerman has not beaten anyone with a winning record, but she is rated the No. 22 lightweight by BoxRec. WBA minimumweight champion Yuko Kuroki is scheduled to fight Nanako Suzuki who is rated No. 31 by BoxRec in the light flyweight division. Harper and Kuroki are both good world champions and probably future Hall of Famers. They had tougher title defenses in the past.

Terri Harper relishes a home headliner – and Caroline Dubois on deck

Terri Harper has never been one to stay in place, having fought in venues across England – Barnsley, Sheffield, Nottingham, Manchester and even Wembley Stadium – while bouncing between divisions as low as junior lightweight and as high as junior middleweight.

But on Friday, the itinerant Harper will be back home – both literally and figuratively – when she takes on Germany’s Natalie Zimmerman in the first defense of her lightweight title at EcoPower Stadium in her hometown of Doncaster, England.

At Wednesday’s fight-week press conference, the 28-year-old Harper, 15-2-2 (6 KOs), called headlining a card staged in her hometown Doncaster Rovers’ stadium a “dream come true” – even if she already had one eye on her next outing.

“It’s such an amazing opportunity and I’m really excited for it,” Harper said. “I can’t wait.”

But even with the undefeated though unproven Zimmerman, 13-0 (3 KOs), up next, Harper was already contemplating who might be on deck.

Harper has been called out by fellow lightweight belt holder Caroline Dubois, 11-0-1 (5 KOs), after negotiations for a potential matchup between the fighters stalled before they ever really gained momentum.

“I don’t know what it is with Caroline Dubois or what her problem is, but I honestly can’t wait to get paid to get in that girl’s face,” Harper said. “First I’ve got to get past Natalie Zimmerman here on Friday night. Then, if she wants it next, she can have it.”

In the meantime, Zimmerman has left no stone unturned in her preparations to blow up Harper’s plans and pull the upset in front of her rival’s fans.

“I’ve brought in girls from all over Europe to give me hard sparring and try to replicate Terri’s style,” Zimmerman said. “I have really put my all into this training camp. I am at my best and I will give my best. Becoming world champion on Friday night means everything to me.”

It won’t come easy against Harper, a former junior lightweight titlist who has battled the likes of Sandy Ryan (at welterweight) and Cecilia Braekhus (at junior middleweight), and who most recently handed Rhiannon Dixon her first professional defeat in a unanimous decision last September.

By comparison, Zimmerman had fought only in her native Germany before 2024 and has yet to fight in the U.K. or face an opponent of any distinction.

If Harper isn’t overlooking Zimmerman, she at least understands the assignment – and the expectation that she should handle her immediate business in the ring with few problems.

“I’ve got the fire in me, the self-belief, the love for boxing,” Harper said. “I'm hungry again, and if I don’t get a statement win here on Friday night, I’ll be disappointed.”
