It's definitely June 22, 1938 at Yankee Stadium in New York City against Max Schmeling in the rematch.

That was Joe Louis, The Brown Bomber, most defining and important fight.

Louis' best scalps are Schmeling and Baer. It was especially important to win Schmeling because of a loss to him and the way, how Louis avenged that loss, was impressive.

I should have titled this thread "Joe Loui's "First" "greatest" and important fight.
(cant beat becoming HW Champ no matter who you are)

I guess it is how you look at things. The 2nd Schmeling fight was by far the most anticipated fight of his career. However, had he lost to Braddock, a rematch with Schmeling (if it even happened) would not have been as important. And if he lost some key fights on his way up, he may not have ever got a title shot and certainly would not be as highly regarded today.

The 2nd Schmeling fight may have been his greatest performance, but there are several others that are arguable.

I would say his greatest achievement was getting the win in the bIlly Conn fight.

Best and biggest win of his career was his 4th rd KO of Max Baer.

I would not. It is a good thing that it was 15 rounds instead of 12, otherwise Joe does not win.

just the other day, I was reading Joe Louis's 1978 autobiography MY LIFE (1978)
on page 73 he states
"I still consider my greatest fight the one with Baer."
My hand speed was never better,

Baer caught some grief for not getting up. He said “ these people paid 50 bucks to see a fight. Not an execution “.
