Remember the days when one went to a boxing gym, you would hear the
RAT-A-TAT-TAT of a speed bag ?( it's use mainly to sharpen the eyes and improve the jab)
Did it's use go down over the years ?

A feature in every gym I’ve been in. For a young pro , the routine was, get up in the ring , shadow box,3 rounds, hop out , trainer straps on your headgear, helps with getting on the gloves, in the ring you go. Spar say , 4-6 rounds, hop out, three rounds heavy bag, three rounds speed bag, jump rope straight through the rounds, 15 -20 minutes. Sit-ups pushups , stretch , shower, adios. The speed bag was always part of it. Seemed to help with timing and strengthening the shoulders. And yes, the sound of the speed bag is like music to some.

I used to love watching Joe Frazier hit the speed bad back when I trained at his gym. He would have it going fast and then trap the bag against the platform with single left hooks and rights. One time the swivel came out and the bag flew across the gym he hit it so hard.
But does the speed bag make you a better boxer?...I don't think so in terms of what you'll do in the ring. To me, I think it's just good for training the shoulder muscles. Anybody can make the bag move the way it supposed once you learn the easy rhythm of hit the bag, it hits the platform 3 times and then you hit it again...1,2,3..1,2,3..1,2,3 slow or fast, it always 1,2,3..1,2,3. It's just one of the old time classic boxing pieces of equipment that all gyms have.

I remember guys doing that with the bag that you mentioned Joe did. Right in the middle of the rhythm of the bag humming along, they’d throw a hook and trap the bag against the board. Lotta fighters did that but I always figured it was a good way to break the swivel or maybe injure the wrist. Never really did that, but it was just something guys did.

dang, I don't believe that any HW's of today can hit the speed bag like that!
( notice how Jack Sharkey "Old School" 'sways" his body into it ?)

here is the great "Jawnell" hitting the speed bag at age 52 years in 1910,
BTW did you see that one newspaper reporter actually flinch there at the end when it looked like John L. Sullivan
was going to knock the speed bag off its moorings ?
He looked like he had pretty fast fists to me even at that age if you were to arsk me.
