Calzaghe's promoter, allegedly, says the fight will go ahead in September providing the Welshman beats Mario Veit in a mandatory defence on 7 May.

"Joe has called for a unification fight for some time now and Lacy wants the fight, so the ball is now in Joe's court," said Warren

...believe it when we see it? :o :-?

You took the words right out of my mouth! I've just said exactly the same thing over at BBN.

Sounds to me like allegedly is putting the squeeze on sick-note.

Interesting isn't it, the wording of the statement, very much implies that allegedly is losing a bit of patience to my eyes.,

There's no reason on god's earth not to make this fight happen. Johnson and Tarver are otherwise engaged, and Joe's doing nothing but treading water with meaningless defences.

Why bother with a unification? Why not just drop the WBO belt, fornicate off Veit, and make this fight ASAP. AHHH thats right, money!

I'm slightly surprised that Joke Calzaghe has opted to stay at Super Middleweight to fight Lacy.

He's got a great offer to fight Veit, who has the same promoter as Erdei, who Joke is the mandatory for.

I would have thought a move up to Light Heavy to fight Erdei would have offered more money and less risk?

Lets stop talking about sicknote we've all wasted too much time discussing him and nothing ever bears fruit.

Lacy says he'd even fight him in Wales if Joe wouldn't go to the states so it would be something he could take up.

I thought Calzaghe was meant to be struggling to make super middle yet he has fights planned out for the rest of the year at super middle???

The WBO has been so detrimental to his career. Moving up the WBA, IBF and WBC rankings and forcing a mandatory fight on the champion would have been so much better for his career then we would have seen him fight boxers like Sven Ottke instead of Pudding, Salad and Mrsfmvksmsmlfsmkl

I know what you are saying...but it depends what you want from your career. Once upon a time, I believe he did want to be the best from an honour point of view. And maybe that still lingers. But I believe psychologically he has got used to the WBO which has brought him wealth, it has to be said.

I like Lacy. One of those guys who seems genuinely willing to get it on wherever he has to!

Yep agreed. I think the Calzaghe who battered Eubank wanted to be the very best, he fought with a lot of fire and determination, and looked like he wanted it all. Then the money started rolling in, and the sight of packed arenas, the comfort of fighting at home every time, and the string of 'record breaking' WBO defences all convinced him that he was already a living legend.

Someone emailed me today and they put it well. 'Lacy may not be the most talented, but he has bags of desire and looks like he would walk through fire to get what he wants.'

It's a long time since we've seen that from Calzaghe.

I just hope the fight happens and then I will gladly eat my words.

he's got to win in GERMANY first......i mean even if he beat shit out of veit for 12 rounds,he'll be lucky to get a S/D...

Definitely. He'll look to spark him. If Veit can get on his bike and with Joe's hands reputedly more fragile with each fight, it could be more interesting than people think.

Well, I don't know about that. Bear in mind how much money Joe has made the WBO over the years, are the WBO really going to piss on his chips? I don't think allegedly will be settling for any officials for this one he has doubts about.

I know absolutly zip about Calzaghe's career, but their is alot of contempt for him. I only have interest in the SM div because my man Green and Mundine are in it, but why so much disrespect for Calzaghe?

Because everyone is tired waiting for him and the 'megafight' he's been threatening to have for the last four years.

Posted: 06 Apr 2005, 05:35
by jomothepure
Yep. 'Megafights' against the 2000 or so boxers he's called out and then hasn't fought
