Former champ Deontay Wilder to return June 27 vs. Tyrrell Herndon

Former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder will return June 27 in a 10-round bout vs. Tyrrell Herndon in Wichita, Kansas, promoters Nelson Lopez and Joshua Chasse of Global Combat Collective told ESPN on Friday.

Wilder, 39, has won only one of his past five fights. He was brutally knocked out by heavyweight contender Zhilei Zhang in June and prior to that was routed by former champion Joseph Parker over 12 rounds.

Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs) is regarded as one of the heavyweight division's most fearsome punchers ever.

His championship trilogy with Tyson Fury was memorable; despite going 0-2-1, Wilder floored Fury twice in each of the first and third meetings. In the second bout, Wilder was stopped in Round 7.

Now, Wilder will look to notch his first win since October 2022 (a first-round KO of Robert Helenius) with this fight against Herndon, a 37-year-old journeyman from San Antonio with a record of 24-5 (with 15 KOs).

Herndon has won three fights since a second-round TKO loss to undefeated Olympic silver medalist Richard Torrez in October 2023. Herndon's last fight was a six-round split-decision in May 2024.

"This is Wilder's legacy reloaded, he's still one of the hardest punchers in boxing," Chasse said. "He's on the road back to becoming the heavyweight champion of the world, and this is the first step."

Deontay Wilder’s return to the ring is set for Friday, June 27.

The former WBC heavyweight champion is set to appear at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas, according to a press release from the Global Combat Collective (GCC).

The return will be shown on BLK Prime.

Wilder has not fought since suffering back-to-back losses in Saudi Arabia to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang in December 2023 and June 2024 respectively.

He is due to box San Antonio’s Tyrrell Anthony Herndon, who is 24-5 (15 KOs), on a bout that is listed on BoxRec, with Nelson Lopez listed as the promoter.

The show is billed as Legacy Reloaded.

Wilder, who turns 40 in October, is 43-4-1 (42 KOs) having won a bronze at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Wilder’s 21-1 17 KOs) stablemate, Deon Nicholson, who also comes from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, like the ex-champion, is due to fight on the card which is set to include “a line--up of dynamic rising stars and Wichita’s top local talent, all seizing the opportunity to shine on one of boxing’s biggest nights.”

Wilder is going through a sticky patch, but bear in mind he's lost only to top 10 boxers.

If he can string 3 or 4 wins together (ideally with in 12 months) he could still figure in another big fight.

If AJ can reel off a couple of blowouts i still think Joshua v Wilder could sell, especially in England.

Deontay Wilder: I want everybody who is in my way

Deontay Wilder hopes his June contest with Tyrell Anthony Herndon will be a springboard to fighting one day for the undisputed heavyweight title.

The 39-year-old is not calling his fight in Wichita at the Charles Koch Arena a comeback, because he says he has not been away following consecutive defeats to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang.

“They think when someone has left the ring for a significant amount of time, and then they return, they feel like it’s a comeback,” Wilder told BS. “But it’s never a comeback. It’s always just returning from the ring. You leave the ring and you return to it.”

By Wilder time he does fight Herndon, who is 24-5 (15 KOs) and from San Antonio, Texas, he would have been out for a year, but the 43-4-1 (42 KOs) Wilder – a former long-time WBC champion – still wants the chance to fight for all four belts.

“I mean, I want whoever is at the top,” said the former champion from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. “I want whoever is going to make great fights, period. I don’t have a list of names. I mean, if a fight gets me to my end goal of where I want to go, then hell, let’s go. We all in the same division. We already know that you’re always close to a title fight. One fight, one night. And so I don’t have a list of fighters that I want. I want everybody that’s in my way from me getting to where I need to go. If you get in my way, I want you. I want to take your head off.”

The heavyweight division has seen Tyson Fury retire, Anthony Joshua rest after being injured in his fight with Daniel Dubois last September, and Oleksandr Usyk – who meets Dubois in the summer – reign supreme.

Does Wilder believe Usyk is the best of the current crop?

“I mean, that’s who got the belts,” Wilder said. “So, you know, whether you want to agree or not.”

For years, Wilder and Joshua talked about fighting, but it never happened. Is there unfinished business?

“I mean, we all know,” Wilder stated.

Then, somewhat cryptically of the Joshua fight never happening, which it likely would have had Joshua not lost his first fight to Andy Ruiz, Wilder said: “That’s why I would have been the unified undisputed heavyweight champion of the world years ago [when he had the WBC belt and Joshua had the remaining titles]. Many people know that but unfortunately other people had the opportunity to even do that [make the fight]. They didn’t even have nowhere near my status of being able to be an elite fighter or what would make a historic fight for years to come. But that’s not here nor there. Everything I’ve said in this business, because of how I look at this business, is because of how I know certain things in this business.”

Now pain-free, ‘Windmill’ Deontay Wilder looking to return with a bang

Deontay Wilder is excited to get back into the ring when he returns next month.

The former WBC heavyweight champion fights Tyrell Anthony Herndon in Wichita on June 27. The 39-year-old is refusing to call the bout a comeback, following losses to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang.

However, now 43-4-1 (42 KOs), he also hopes to show an improved version of himself, almost three years on from his last win – which came when he battered Robert Helenius in a round.

Wilder said that for years he battled through shoulder pain that finally resulted in two surgeries and now he is pain free and predicting a return to his wild and violent best.

“I’m going to feel amazing,” he told BS of his return. “You know, my mind is back, my spirit. Physically, I’m back. I’m free of injuries now. They used to call me ‘Windmill Wilder.’ I didn’t have that windmill no more. I got that motherfucker now. Yeah, I’ve had two surgeries on my shoulders. It had cost me [in previous fights] to still be injured… at least the last three to four years of my career. I had to do what I had to do. You know, I still had to go out and do what I wanted to do. I could have sat around for years to try to heal this shoulder up. And anybody know anything about a shoulder injury, they know that’s like one of the most longest recoveries. And every time I lifted my arm or threw my right hand or even wiped my ass, my arm, my shoulder were hurt. I was in pain 24 hours a day, but still trying to have a regular lifestyle of living. You know what I’m saying? You can’t let it irritate you or bother you for the rest of your life. You got to be able to adapt to the pain and the situation and still have some type of natural ability of carrying on with life.”

The puncher from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, will fight Herndon at the Charles Koch Arena in a fight that is scheduled for 10 rounds. Herndon, from San Antonio, Texas, is 24-5 (15 KOs).

Deontay Wilder undercard

Fellow Tuscaloosan Deon Nicholson appears in the co-main event of the fight card, aiming to show off his power to a broader audience.

‘The Equalizer’ boasts 17 knockouts from his 21 victories against one loss. He faces Devonte Williams in a ten-round light-heavyweight encounter.

Next comes former amateur standout Nico Hernandez. The home fighter returns to Wichita for the first time since 2022 and makes his first boxing appearance in two years.

The ex-BKFC fighter bids to improve his perfect 11-0 record, having claimed a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Furthermore, Wichita’s heavyweight, Iron Man John Cantrell, showcases his 91% KO ratio against Franklin Sparks on the Deontay Wilder undercard.

It makes me laugh how they try and convince people they will be back better than ever. He's almost 40, you don't improve the older you get, especially after knockout defeats, looking gun shy, looking on the decline and carrying injuries. He will likely KO Herndon but it means nothing.

Fubo is the latest player to present boxing pay-per-view events.

Fubo announced on Thursday that it will offer former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder’s fight against Tyrrell Herndon on June 27 on its sports streaming television platform. Billed as “Legacy Reloaded,” the main event fight will take place at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas.

The pay-per-view event is priced at $24.95.

Event promoter Global Combat Collective announced the show also will be distributed by BLK Prime and Integrated Sports across the United States and Canada live on cable, satellite and digital PPV via In Demand, DirecTV, Dish, Bell TV, Rogers and PPV.com. The broadcast begins at 9 p.m. ET.

“PPV demonstrates Fubo’s continued commitment to serve consumers with an aggregated content offering at attractive price points, and with the flexibility to subscribe to content of their choosing,” Fubo co-founder and CEO David Gandler said in a statement.

In separate news earlier this week, Fubo and DAZN announced a multi-year distribution partnership designed to get more viewership for both platforms, as DAZN content will head to Fubo on the new linear channel, DAZN1, while DAZN will distribute the Fubo Sports FAST channel.

“Fubo and DAZN’s partnership delivers more premium sports to fans, wherever they choose to watch,” Gandler said. “Adding DAZN’s unmatched fight content enhances our sports entertainment lineup while offering customers greater flexibility.”

A Fubo spokesperson told The Ring that the company did not have anything else to share about its long-term boxing PPV and live boxing event plans at this time.

Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs), 39, is 1-4 in his last five fights and looked lackluster in the two most recent matchups. The Tuscaloosa, Alabama, native was stopped in the fifth round by Zhilei Zhang last June and lost a unanimous decision to Joseph Parker in December 2023.

Herndon (24-5, 15 KOs), of San Antonio, Texas, has never competed on the world level. He was stopped in the second round by upstart prospect Richard Torrez Jr., his toughest opponent to date, in October 2023.

And he did sign a one fight deal with Hearn last year.
