I hope not, seems too young, but did read he was in poor health a few years back.

What a ferocious fighter he was in his prime.

When I think of aggressive boxers "Boy" Green always springs to mind.


Robert Smith has some excellent anecdotes of his time sparring with Green

Oh good, hopefully that’s right and the BBC checked before they posted that - it would be strange if they hadn’t.

One of the first fights I remember watching was the amazing and shocking knock out by Sugar Ray Leonard of Dave -well past his prime, but wouldn’t have made much difference if he wasn’t tbh.

The previous generation would remember him for his blasting out of John H Stacey, to get that first world title shot. And that massive upset in Denmark, where the danish commentator went absolutely crazy.

When Tris Dixon interviewed Robert Smith for the Boxing Life Stories podcasts, Smith recounted the first time he owned a cup protector and was chuffed to bits with it.

My take on the story was that Green clearly had a mean streak a mile long, or some might argue a mischievous side to his nature, but during sparring it sounded as if Green deliberately hit Smith in the balls to the extent that Robert sunk to the canvas. Green then kneels down and whispers in Smith's ear...... "does it work ? " !

I remember well his appearance in superstars

First time he did the Kayakking he was no good, but the second time he was great.

I think it was Ron Pickering commentating and he'd said that Green had improved tremendously through the unorthodox training technique of tying a metal rubbish bin to drag through the water to make it harder for him.

Bob Lonkhurst's biography of him, "The Fen Tiger", is well worth getting. Think it is only available second-hand these days.

The left hand was the Haymaker, right hand was the Muckspreader, or the other way around, I forget. When he fought Joey Singleton for the British title he came into the ring wearing a farmer's smock, floppy hat and a straw in his mouth, supposedly what he wore during his day job as a carrot picker on a local farm. Years later before the Stracey fight a reporter asked Stracey's manager Terry Lawless what he thought of Green. Lawless' reply "Can't fight. Bloody good at picking carrots though."

I mean, hopefully he's fine, but he is 72.

His fight with Andy Price is a must see.
