VADA informed all relevant parties Wednesday that Jaime Munguia’s A-sample returned an adverse analytical finding for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites following a urine sample on May 4 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, when he defeated Bruno Surace, sources told The Ring.
Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) has 10 days to request analysis of his B-sample for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites. If his B-sample also returns an adverse finding for the banned substance, Munguia faces suspension and the result of his decision victory could be overturned to a no-contest.
Mexico’s Munguia, 28, defeated Surace in the super middleweight rematch after he was KO'd in Round 6 by the Frenchman in December in The Ring’s Upset of the Year.
“I’m shocked by the news that Jaime Munguia tested positive for a banned substance,” Surace, 26, told The Ring on Thursday. “There’s no place in boxing for cheating; the sport is dangerous enough already.
“I went to Mexico and knocked out Munguia fair and square in December and I was gracious enough to give him a rematch in May. He knew he could not beat me on a level playing field. I trust that this result will be overturned immediately.”
Surace (26-1-2, 5 KOs) was a major underdog when he traveled to Tijuana, Mexico, in what amounted to a stay-busy fight for Munguia. After all, Surace was moving up one weight class and had scored just four career KOs.
In a career-defining victory, Surace sprung the upset when he landed a massive right hand in Round 6 that planted Munguia on the canvas in Round 6 for the 10 count.
Munguia linked up with renowned trainer Eddy Reynoso ahead of the rematch and held training camp in the Sierra Nevada mountains alongside former foe Canelo Alvarez. (Alvarez defeated Munguia in May 2024.)
And then on the undercard of Canelo’s victory over William Scull in May, Munguia exacted revenge with a unanimous decision victory over Surace in a competitive fight. Following the fight, Munguia climbed to No. 5 in The Ring’s 168-pound rankings while Surace fell to No. 8.
But now, that victory could be eliminated as Munguia faces discipline following a rocky 2024 where he suffered the first two losses of his career.

Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs), who denied doping in a statement released on via social media account Thursday afternoon, has 10 days to request analysis of his B-sample for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites. If his B-sample also returns an adverse finding for the banned substance, Munguia faces suspension and the result of his decision victory could be overturned to a no-contest.
"Several experts have explained that there are multiple ways contamination can occur," Munguia's statement said. "I am fully willing to undergo any retroactive, current, or future testing to demonstrate that I have always been a clean athlete."

"Throughout my boxing career, I have undergone numerous anti-doping tests and have never tested positive," Munguia's statement said. "I was tested twice during this training camp, and both results came back negative, which is why receiving this notification of an adverse finding has been a complete surprise to me."

Name fighters who aren't on PEDs. It doesn't matter what their bodies look like. The lazy ones will still gain benefits from the PEDs despite not looking the part. There is no current fighter that I would confidently say isn't on PEDs. If I had to guess, i'd say at least 99% of current fighters are on them. Certainly everyone at world level is.

maybe some poor sods from poor countries who make tiny purses. id guess that your filipino minimum weight journeyman might be the type. there are some guys who probably just dont take it seriously enough to do a ped regiment either, a lazy guy brought in to just cover up for a 40-36
but for higher profile fighters, theres no one i would bet on not using. even if they passed tests masking and cycling at the right times has advanced so far. peds can improve performance so much and its gotten to the point where youre using just to keep up with the pack

Agreed. Someone will probably say David Price never used. Well I would bet that he has but even if he hasn't, then it comes down to your point - does he have a choice? You have to use them to keep up with the pack. If he could go back in time, I'd say he definitely would have been using (he already was imo but that's besides the point), considering his opponents were using and he ended up getting starched. So that's the question for the people who would say Pricey wasn't/wouldn't use - he simply has to if he wants to be competitive and have a chance. It's no good later in life when you end up having dementia and needing loved ones to start giving care, and then you turn around and say well at least I never used. Meanwhile your opponent is living lavishly off the back of PEDs giving him the advantage over you. If nothing else, fighters will tell themselves they are doing it for their families/kids etc. In order to not use PEDs today, you'd have to be a naive idealist. A very immature person.
Fury was caught and he's not exactly body beautiful. Seems to be able to not live the life at all between fights and then come in and do 12 rounds at a good pace.
When Larry O was caught he showed no remorse whatsoever and said everyone is at it. I agree with him.
It's the murky world of boxing. We're not talking about people who have the integrity of a Malcolm X here.

Not all fighters are on PEDS, far from it. Simple as that. The overwhelming majority of fighters are not on PEDs in fact.
HOWEVER.....
There is a significant percentage of fighters that do use them, either through prescribed TUEs or under the radar.
This is the truth.....
Nobody wants (and the sport can't afford) to pay for universal random drug testing and the legal battles that arise when people fail tests. Nobody wants to lose out on their investments by big names being banned for years/life.
The consequence is the shitty testing shambles we have now.
My basic solution would be:
Stop all the expensive random testing, knocking on people's doors, etc and let the fighters quietly do what they choose to do whilst in training. But test ALL fighters post fight and if they fail, they get a global lifetime ban with no right of appeal and have a standard contract that they sign to acknowledge they agree to that that must be signed before fighting.
Yes all sorts would go on in training but so what, it does now and the sport's image is gash. At least with the method I suggest there would be a major deterrent for those tempted to really push the boat out and the image of discipline in the sport would be strengthened.

Part of me has wondered about some of these performances in Saudi.
I think there’s been quite a few really flat performances, Canelo was a notable one. It made me wonder if they aren’t able to dope / rehydrate like they do in the US.
