QUEENSBERRY CLOSING IN ON SIGNING OF FORMER WORLD KICKBOXING CHAMPION DONEGI ABENA
Queensberry Promotions are in talks to add yet another exciting heavyweight to their roster with the signing of former world kickboxing champion Donegi Abena.
The 27-year-old Suriname-born fighter won the Glory light-heavyweight (209.4lb) title back in February 2023 and made a successful first defence before he lost it in March 2024.
He has had four further kickboxing fights since then but now appears to be trying his hand at boxing following an announcement that he has now agreed a deal with Queensberry.
The Ring understands talks are ongoing with regards to the details of the deal but Abena could be about to join the most powerful heavyweight stable in world boxing.
The likes of IBF champion Daniel Dubois, Fabio Wardley, Joseph Parker and red hot prospect Moses Itauma are among the names already signed to Queensberry and Abena is now set to join them.
His manager Johnny Edwards posted a picture of himself alongside Abena and allegedly stating: "I am absolutely delighted to announce that Queensberry Promotions and allegedly have agreed to a long-term promotional deal with one of the most exciting heavyweight prospects in the world - Donegi Abena.
"Over the past three years we've worked closely together, sharpening his skills and preparing him to dominate the heavyweight division. Now, with this partnership, I can fully focus on guiding this powerhouse to the very top.
"The journey to heavyweight supremacy starts now. He will be known as The Big Don. Let's go."
At the time of writing there has been no official confirmation from Queensberry but a source close to negotiations told The Ring that talks are progressing.

Weird signing if true. He's been sparked out a few times in Kickboxing, he won't do anything in boxing. Don't think he'd be a Skelton level even.

Well I just watched a clip of him fighting Bahram Rajabzadeh in the Final of the Light Heavyweight Grand Prix Tournament from last year, and he stopped Bahram in the 1st round. That's a pretty impressive win. Bahram always fights with a kill or be killed style, and more often than not he's the one that comes out on top, but against Abena, he did not.
Abena showed good punching power in this fight. I'll have to look at some of his other fights, but I can see where this guy could be a tough opponent. He may have been signed as a potential opponent for Wardley in the near future if they get Abena a few Boxing wins.
They'll market it off of Fabio having a White collar Boxing background and Donegi having a Kickboxing background. So they both don't have your typical route into Pro Boxing, but here they are.

Near as I can tell he's had a lot more big fights in Glory Kickboxing. I'll post the highs and lows of it all when I've had a better look at his career, but this guy is definitely legitimately tough, and a big puncher. He will be far behind many boxers in terms of pure Boxing technique, but he will more than match them in toughness, conditioning and punching power in my suspicion.

If he's getting KO'd with hands in Kickboxing, he's going to get badly out boxed in pro boxing. He'll be eating massive shots.
