He could have beat many of them.
Since the 1930s was better than the 1980s Tyson probably would have been less dominate. Could have been the youngest champ in the early-mid 1930s.

Tyson was a bully in the ring (and the hotel room) and once Joe starts landing clean like Holyfield did, Tyson will be a lot more hesitant to engage. He could well put Louis on the deck, but Joe is either stopping Mike in the mid rounds or Tyson finds a way to get DQ'd.

Seriously though. Who did Louis ever beat that Tyson wouldn't annihilate.

Walcott for one. Everyone rated the 1930s higher than the 1980s for heavyweights in a recent thread.

Unlike Mike's era, there were no steroids when Joe was fighting. Mike, by his own admission, used other people's urine to avoid failing drug tests - he claims the drugs he was using were only recreational....do we believe him?

If Mike was a steroid user - highly likely imo - he'd have been much reduced as a fighter back in the 30s. We have to consider that when comparing men from the 60s to now with those from earlier periods.

Forms of PEDs have been around for centuries and testing wasn’t done. I think in a sport generally regarded as the most corrupt sport in the world it’s a pretty safe bet that cheating has always gone on in one form or another.

Tyson didn't annihilate Mitch Green, Quick Tillis, Bonecrusher Smith or Tony Tucker. I'd argue that Joe Louis would have stopped all four of them.

Louis beats Tyson.

I think Mike likely beats everyone else, but I could picture Max Schmeling pulling off an upset on the right night. A bout with Max Baer probably ends up like Tyson-Bonecrusher Smith or Tyson-Tucker, but Max definitely has a puncher's chance and a KO win by him isn't out of the question. Tommy Loughran would be defeated, but give Tyson fits along the way.

Louis fought several guys who I think would lose to Tyson, but by no means would go easily. This includes '30s and '40s, competition. In addition to Walcott, I would add Jack Sharkey, Billy Conn, Bob Pastor and Tommy Farr.

Maybe Tyson stops Tillis, the rest of those guys :stop: Tucker wasn't stopped till near the end of his career, Tyson and Lennox Lewis couldn't stop him, and if you think Joe Louis hits harder than those guys I can't help you. Bonecrusher also had a very solid chin and was only stopped in his prime on cuts by Holmes. Mitchell Green could also take a punch.

I remember years ago you said that you didn't think Tyson was that hard of a puncher, have you changed your mind?

It 's not just about power, though obviously you have to have some. Louis was a fighter who threw a lot of punches and was very accurate. Hence, he landed a lot of punches. Louis was also a great finisher. If he hurt a guy, he almost always finished him off.

How about the obvious one, Buster Douglas? Would Louis have a chance of stopping him?

Also worth mentioning that Tillis did more than go the distance against Tyson. He gave Tyson a competitive fight. Tucker gave Tyson some trouble and if he did not hurt his hand early in the fight it would have been very interesting.

Would a 30-year-old Louis have been stopped by a 34-year-old Holyfield? No way.

Obviously, Tyson had some great performances. However, like everyone, he had several fights where he did not just blow the other guy away.

He'd been stopped a few times before the Tyson fight and was blown out in a round by Tim Witherspoon.

I assume you've seen alot of footage of Louis. His poor footwork (compare with prime Tyson's) his poor defense (compare with prime Tyson's)

Like many boxers before and after him, he did what worked best for him and it worked.

Louis had poor footwork and poor defense? Tbh, I don't recall anyone saying that before. Always thought that he was one of the most fundamentally sound heavyweights of all time.

Tyson would not be roided in 30s. Still, he would beat up guys until somebody beat him.

Didn't Ali often highligh Louis's shortcomings? Called him robotic.

Louis-Tyson would be a great fight.

Mike in the 1930s... I think he beats everyone other than Louis. That fight is up for grabs. If Tyson drops Joe early it's game over.

Likely Mike loses to one of the others somewhere along the way. Just in his nature.
