Is Lightweight Julio Cesar Chavez the best fighter of all time in cutting off the ring?

the problem with a lot of fighters is they follow the guy straight ahead , when cutting the ring off is really about moving side to side, at the right time.
you dont even need fast feet to be good at it,
e.g. foreman was quite good at it
and people would wonder how joe joyce had as much success as he did in landing despite being so slow - one of the reasons is that he knew how to cut off the escape routes. and when you can get in range, a speed deferential becomes less consequential

I’ll throw Golovkin’s name in there.

Great shout. Whilst Chavez was able to trap people against the ropes, GGG used that front foot to not only cut the ring off but constantly be in punching range that made his opponent burn so much nervous energy.

Duran, especially at lightweight, was a master at it. Bazooka Gomez at 122 too

All-Time Greats at Cutting Off the Ring
1. Gennady Golovkin
• Why: He applied constant, intelligent pressure with subtle footwork, never rushing but always closing space. Rarely wasted movement or punches.
• Example Fights: vs. David Lemieux, vs. Kell Brook
2. Julio César Chávez Sr.
• Why: Chavez was a master of steady, suffocating pressure. He didn’t chase opponents—he guided them.
• Example Fights: vs. Meldrick Taylor, vs. Edwin Rosario
3. Joe Frazier
• Why: His bob-and-weave style was paired with relentless forward movement. He cut off angles masterfully to land his lethal left hook.
• Example Fights: vs. Muhammad Ali (especially the first fight)
4. Roberto Durán
• Why: In his lightweight prime, Durán combined aggression, feints, and superior positioning to shut down movers and force inside fights.
• Example Fights: vs. Esteban De Jesús, vs. Sugar Ray Leonard I
5. Marvin Hagler
• Why: Equally adept at orthodox and southpaw stances, Hagler herded opponents like a tactician. He controlled space like few others.
• Example Fights: vs. John Mugabi, vs. Thomas Hearns

Canelo, Beterbiev and Loma are some more recent ones too.
