by throwing punches like a "riveting gun"
Volume, Volume, Volume !
Throw really hard punches mixed with 'soft " punches and punches with power in-between.
at every exposed inch of him and also at the parts he would be covering up.
Don't even give him a chance to breath.
Up-Down-Up-Down-Down-Down Up-down !
( in rhythm and then in a broken rhythm-then back to a rhythm then non-rhythm
to the belly, to the sides, on the arms on the neck on top of his head ,then on the shoulder
dont let him think !
dont allow him to get off the ropes-keep boring in
every second and every "nano-second" for all 10 rounds or more !
remember- Volume, Volume, Volume !

well, whenever you get near james toney he will try to put his head behind your left ear right away. now try throwing your right hand behind your left ear! you can't!

he can hide his head there because your own head gets in the way and turns into a shield that he can park his head behind and he always gets a warning when you want to throw your right hand because he is so glued to you that he can feel your body trying to turn to throw your right hand ineffectually across your chest. he doesn't have to see your right hand. he can feel it. since he can feel every time your right hand is coming he can push his shoulder into your chest so you can't get your body to turn into your punch. or he can pull away from your body to make your right hand breeze by and counter you.

there goes your right hand. well, how about your hook? do you think you'd have more luck with that punch?

heres james toney, as always, tucking his head behind your left ear to use your own head to block your own right hand.

but whats he doing with his hands?

- I'm not Roy, but he laid the blueprint of domination by just walking around keeping Toney off balance and popping him at will.

Guaranteed I was considerably faster and better conditioned than Two Ton, and in fact would've taken him up when he challenged Boxing writers to step into the ring with him after they were nagging him about his weight. My best heavybag session was 23 2/3rd straight rounds @100 punches a round mostly in combination while moving with the bag both aggressively and in reverse or side to side. That's well over an hour.

Ali said when he could go 5 rounds straight on the heavy bag he was ready to fight for comparison..

Danny Green a LH handled him easily in sparring. What you don't want is to tire and be in front of him like cracked out Nunn did. Tiberi and Montell Griffin also handled him easily. Fres Oquendo rolled him out of the ring like a whiskey barrel. He had no shame... :TU:

He's probably guarding his body with his hands, getting ready to shoot a counter hook.

yes, you're right. since he has his head tucked away he doesn't have to keep a hand up to block your right hand, which means he can use his arm to cover up his body. and since he can feel when you want to throw a right hand and his arm is already right next to your body, he can toss a short, quick hook to your liver when you pick up your right elbow. every time you try to throw a right hand you'll have to give him a free body shot and thats hardly worth it.

the way that james toney has his head tucked away means that you can't spatially or mechanically throw a meaningful right hand. but you can throw a hook. but when you try to throw your hook he can put a hand up to block, or grab onto your arm (he was doing that a lot to iran barkley) and hold onto (or spin) you, but, what he really wants to do, is get his arm on top of your arm which creates a seal or lid. when he has his arm on top of your arm and your arm is sealed down he gets a nice, clear runway to your head where he can hit you, but you can't hit him.

Image

since he doesn't have his hands up all the time you'd probably think there must be a lot of ways he can be hit, right? but when you try to hit him you'll discover there are a lot more tricks and traps than you'd think.

yeah, but what if you do it 'southpaw" style ?wood that throw him off and confuse him ?
how many 'southpaws" did James Toney face in his career?
(just arsking for a friend)
anyway he doesn't look to be "on the ropes" there.
BTW I would place my own forehead gently but firmly right in the center of his own forehead-right between his eyes
(without butting of course) that may have thrown his plan off too.
nobody trying to be giving me a "hickey" in the ring I tell you that !

I really appreciate the way you break all the subtleties of specific techniques in Boxing Yuzo. A really sharp eye for detail. Sorry for these other idiots in the thread, and their petty grudges, or whatever the the hell they got going on

It’s a tough style to deal with for sure.
I’d do my best not to fall into any type of clinch with him after throwing my own shots.
He’s got that shoulder roll he likes to do from the outside too if I remember correctly.
I’d be moving to my right and jabbing quite a bit from the conventional stance. On the inside which I would probably try to avoid as much as possible, I’d try and keep my arms above his.
I’d try to turn him throwing upper cuts off of hooks to the body on my right side , his left.
Other than that, it’s a challenge for sure.

I remember I was about to beat up Sonny Liston but luckily for him he died right before I could do it. I went on to have a glorious fighting and training career but I won't tell anyone my name so that they can verify it. To further protect my identity, I write on Boxrec in the voice of someone decades younger than I would have to have been in order to be active in the era I claim to have been in. Hope this all makes sense.

well, when you do get near james toney and he tucks his head what you should do is take the heel of your hand and push his head back up.

Image

what thats going to do is tee his head up for your right hand which you can now throw now that your own head isn't in the way. that will discombobulate everything. before you try to do this

yeah, one of the taticss I would try to use would be,
place the front part of my forearm(right behind wrist band) right under his chin
and use the leverage to bend back his head and also sideways, then maybe strife him a few times
across the face with the laces of the glove.

Definitely the best approach to fighting Toney is to jab and move on him from the outside. Getting into the trenches with him is playing right into his hands.

He wasn't the easiest guy to outbox at length either, but you'd have a much better shot at winning that way than attempting to outfight him in close.
