‘Ekow Essuman is just a puncher with no defense’

Jack Catterall’s new trainer Derek “Bozy” Ennis has dismissed Ekow Essuman as little more than a “puncher."

Catterall on Saturday fights for the first time under Ennis’ guidance, at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on the undercard of the middleweight rematch between Chris Eubank Jnr and Conor Benn.

The welterweight has prepared under the in-demand Ennis in Philadelphia, having long previously worked out of Manchester, England, under his former trainer Jamie Moore, and in the 36-year-old Essuman confronts the opponent who retired his long-term rival Josh Taylor.

Aged 32, Catterall recruited Ennis in his attempts to pursue the WBO title held by Brian Norman Jnr, and, not unlike with his Cuban lightweight Andy Cruz – who is scheduled to challenge IBF titleholder Raymond Muratalla on January 24, partly through having become a more aggressive fighter – Ennis is predicting swift progress for his latest charge.

“You gon’ see,” he told BS. “Once we get this guy out the way, you gon’ see. Just like with Andy. ‘Every time you see Andy he ‘gon be better and better,' and look what happened.

“[Essuman is] just a puncher. No defense. All Jack gotta do is box him; lateral movement; inside; outside; a lot of feints. Jack should prevail with this fight.”

Norman, incidentally, is scheduled to defend his WBO title against Devin Haney in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on the undercard of David Benavidez-Anthony Yarde on November 22.

Ekow will make Catterall work very very hard, close fight, hope Ekow gets it.

Jack Catterall is looking forward to showing the results of two months worth of hard work when he boxes Ekow Essuman this weekend.

Earlier this year, the welterweight made the difficult decision to leave behind his young family and his long time trainer, Jamie Moore, and crossed the Atlantic to join up with Derrick “Bozy” Ennis at his gym in Philadelphia.

The new partnership gets underway at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday night. Catterall (31-2, 13 KOs) will box Essuman (22-1, 8 KOs) over 12 rounds on the undercard of the middleweight rematch between Chris Eubank and Conor Benn. The event will be broadcast on DAZN Pay-Per-View.

The 32-year-old former world title challenger hopes the move to America will reinvigorate his career.

“You've got to take in some consideration the fans are coming to watch you fight and I believe I’ve put on some good fights over the years,” Catterall told The Ring’s Louis Hart.

“There's been one or two performances where you would probably say I underperformed but again that’s on me. I took myself out my comfort zone. I've been away training and preparing hard for this fight.”

These days, Catterall is known for his calm, sharpshooting style but on his his rise through the ranks, the southpaw was respected as a ruthless finisher with heavy hands and outstanding timing.

There is no footage of his frightening one punch knockout of the unbeaten Nathan Brough back in 2014 but he took the talented amateur out with the type of razor sharp left hand you don’t see from run of the mill prospects.

He then bludgeoned his way to a dominant fifth-round stoppage win over former Olympian, Tom Stalker.

As his career progressed and the stakes got higher, Catterall’s fights began to go longer.

Of course, the opposition got steadily tougher but the consequences of defeat also became much bigger. Catterall was always seen as a high risk, low reward opponent and any kind of loss would have made it much easier for potential opponents to avoid him. With a world ranking to protect, winning became the be all and end all while he waited for a major opportunity to present itself.

Catterall finds himself in a similar situation again.

At this stage of his career, a defeat on Saturday night would be extremely difficult to come back from. Conversely, an eye catching win will put him back in the mix for world title opportunities.
Don’t expect to see Catterall walk to the centre of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, plant his feet and trade bombs with Essuman but, if and when he does establish superiority over the tough, aggressive 36-year-old, you may just see the return of the cruel, nasty fighter who broke through more than a decade ago.

“I wouldn't say I want to make things exciting,” he said.

"Of course, you want to entertain the fans. My style of fighting is my style of fighting. Very clinical, don’t take a lot of punches and beat them and beat them well but we've made the adjustments. As everybody knows, I've got a new training team now so a fresh set of eyes and I'm feeling good. I think these styles are going to gel well Saturday.”

Essuman expertly extinguished any hopes of a Taylor rebirth at Glasgow's SSE Hydro in May and two months later, 'The Tartan Tornado' reluctantly bid farewell to boxing, listening to medical advice surrounding a recurring eye issue.

Embracing his newfound role as a pundit on BBC and Queensberry broadcasts of high-profile British fights in recent months, Taylor didn't mince words when previewing their crossroads clash.

"I think Jack wins, quite easily," he told The Ring.

"It's tailor-made for him style-wise, he likes to sit and wait on you [to advance], Ekow comes forward and pushes the pace but isn't cute with his work, you see everything coming, anticipate the shots so Catterall will win quite comfortably.

"For me it was a piss-easy fight [against Essuman] until six or seven rounds in, took my foot off the gas and switched off, let him get into the fight and he worked his game plan better. I couldn't get going, but Catterall will."

When asked about Catterall's newfound coaching partnership with Philadelphia-based Bozy Ennis, he stressed the sport was a selfish one that all things considered, warrants difficult decisions to maximise one's potential.

"If he wants to progress his career, then why not go for it? He probably felt like he had stagnated with Jamie and Nigel, so if that's the move he needs to reach that next level, it's a no-brainer. It's a very selfish sport, so you've got to look after yourself."

Catterall echoed the sentiment Essuman has vulnerabilities to exploit, albeit with a more diplomatic tone when asked about how he matches up against a recent sparring partner.

More entertaining than previous fights of his certainly but I wonder had Jack boxed in his old style would he have dealt with Ekow a lot more easily than he did ?
