On September 21, 1985, 40 years ago, the great Michael Spinks became the first Light-Heavyweight boxing champion in winning a piece of the World Heavyweight Crown by defeating the great IBF World Heavyweight Champion Larry Holmes of Easton, PA.

It was an historical upset and one of the 80s decade greatest fights that don't be talked a lot.

At, 175lbs, Spinks was the unbeaten, undefeated and Undisputed World Light-Heavyweight Champion. Seeing that he didn't had any worthy challengers, he challenged Holmes for the historical upset.

Holmes, at 35, was making his 20th title defense of his title. He was also the Real and Linear Heavyweight Champion. He was also trying to make history by tying Rocky Marciano's record of 49-0, and established himself as an undefeated and unbeaten champion. He wanted to retire with a 50-0 record.

Spinks at 29, a thinking man's fighter, used different training methods of endurance and strength. Boxing purists doubted his unorthodox training regimen.

In a thrilling match, Spinks used the ring going in and out against the aging champion. He used speed, balance and intelligence to unseat the champion who was dominating the division for 7 long years. He never gave Holmes an easy target by going in circles around him. A beautiful strategy.

In the last round, the 15th, a wicked shot by Holmes rocked Spinks, but Spinks recovered and finished the fight.

When the scorecards were announced, Spinks won by a split decision and made boxing history as the first Light-Heavyweight boxing champion to win a piece of the World Heavyweight Crown.
