Really it should have been stopped after that first KD. He was gone.

The ‘points off’ was just the ref allowing Juarez to gain more time to recover.

Once he recovered.. and dropped him couple of time, then the ref waives it.

Embarrassingly biased officiating as usual. Is boxing the most corrupt ‘proper’ sport out there? Can’t be many worse, other than ridiculous things like ice skating / gymnastics which barely count as real sports.

Absolutely outrageous favouritism to the prospect there…he was GONE….the wiping gloves, warning the other guy, the points off twice ..give me a break

he has been awful for years. he got big fights because his dad was the head of boxing in texas

he once told a cut fighter they were ahead on the cards and should say they couldnt see so it would go to a decision. that alone should preclude someone from ever being considered a good ref.

Because it's Laurence Cole I think it may honestly just be general incompetence

He did deduct 2 points from the guy that went down first for holding, in a 6 round bout so that certainly isn't leaving him in any position to win the fight on points under normal circumstances.

Plus the 2nd fighter was REALLY REALLY badly hurt after that 2nd knockdown as well by Juarez, but the referee still allowed for a 3rd one before he called it off.

The referee's officiating was certainly questionable in spots. I don't think it was intentionally biased though.

Juarez didn't get one of those either, but Cole probably should've called it off after the 1st knockdown I agree. I'm pretty sure the rule is that you have to be on your feet, and ready to continue by the count of 9 right? He was on his feet, but he damn sure was not ready to continue.

The referee excused his getting up, and immediately attempting to fight as his forgetting that he had to take the 8 count.

Aaron Pryor did something like that in the 80's, but he wasn't wobbling back and forth when it happened

Stopping it after the first KD wouldn't have been out of the question. Juarez was definitely out of it for most of the opening two minutes and did benefit from the "slow" point deductions, but it's not the first time I've seen that happen. To his credit, he didn't let Layton really get another clean shot on him, although his form tackling (American football) left a lot to be desired. Layton tried to be patient but seemed irritated by Juarez's stay-alive grappling tactics. Layton got careless and forgot all about defense, especially in the final 45 seconds or so, paying the price because obviously Juarez can crack. I think a rematch is in order.

It's definitely worse. That fight is the single most biased officiating I've ever seen. The guy that's hurt in the 1st round at some point is being held up by his shorts by his corner, and he pulls the opponent off of him to give him a warning for seemingly no reason when he was landing clean blows to the face...and he takes like a solid 10 or 15 seconds to issue that warning that there was no reason to issue.

Juarez-Layton seemed longer than 3 minutes. It seemed to me the bell should have rung in between knockdowns 2 and 3 of Layton.

Good observation! Just counting in my head - take that for what it's worth - the third KD came 7 or 8 seconds after the bell should have rung.

The stoppage would've been fair enough by itself (given Layton's immediate attempt to rise I'd have counted a few seconds to assess), but if you're gonna be a generous ref you have to extend that courtesy to both fighters.

Juarez didn't step to the mark after the first knockdown and that was allowed to slide.
