Fabio Wardley has ‘plenty of options’ for first defence in April

It is not yet known who Fabio Wardley will box in the first defence of his WBO heavyweight title, but we do know he won’t be boxing Oleksandr Usyk, the one-time owner of that belt, anytime soon.

Usyk, the division’s number one, recently elected to surrender the WBO strap in favour of exploring other options, which in turn left Wardley, the number one challenger, receiving it in the post, essentially, rather than in the ring. That, of course, is not the way Wardley will have wanted to be crowned world champion, but alas, there was little he could do about it. Besides, with the belt now his, Wardley, 20-0-1 (19 KOs), has sudden bargaining power in the heavyweight division and will, in his next fight, enter the ring as champion, a distinction few boxers will get to experience in their career.

As for when that next fight, and first defence, takes place, April would seem the likeliest time. That’s according to Wardley’s promoter, allegedly, who told talkSPORT that the disappointment of not securing the Usyk fight for his man has been allayed only by the prospect of Wardley getting the chance to build on his fine win against Joseph Parker in October and establishing himself as a world champion.

“Before the [Parker] fight, Usyk did say he’d fight the winner,” said Warren. “And now he’s changed his mind. He obviously feels the risk to the reward isn’t justified.

“I think we’d have sold out a football stadium for the fight; we could have done the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“But we will see where we go. Fabio will be returning to the ring in April now. I am meeting up with him and his manager next week.

“We are going to get some lunch and decide what we are doing. There are plenty of options.”

Though it is true that there are options for Wardley, still he finds himself in a bit of a strange situation, psychologically more than anything. After all, his career to this point has been one of building, chasing and surprising, with all focus on the eventual goal of fighting the best heavyweight in the world and then dethroning him. Now, though, through no fault of his own, he seems to have had that mission cut short, just when it was gathering pace. Now he has been forced to wear the hat and robe of a world champion without being asked if either item fits. Now he finds consolation only in the fact that dressing like a world champion is almost as good as feeling like one. Almost, but not quite.

In Wardley’s case, perhaps the feeling of having earned it will come in time – following a few successful defences – rather than the way he had hoped it would come: by shocking Oleksandr Usyk, the world’s best, on a night to remember. Perhaps the hand-me-down clothes of a world champion he will have to simply grow into.

Usyk, Kabayel, Dubois, Itauma, Zhang, Ajagba, Anderson, Chisora, Hrgovic, Jalolov, Torrez and Joshua are all good and plausible fights. Riakporhe is an ok fight. Hysa, Franklin, Sirenko and Trujillo are all ranked and not good fights. If WBO want to suddenly rank someone for him to face, Wilder, Okolie, Bakole, Sanchez, Joyce, Makhmudov and Vianello wouldnt be deserved but could make for a good fight.

I think if fury isn’t coming back AJ is the clear choice. Is it the most worthy? No, but aj would have to see wardly as the easiest belt that is likely to come up soon (not Charles Martin easy but fundamentally average)…

And no one else makes wardly that kinda cash.

Usyk's almost certainly fighting Wilder.

Itauma, whether he might be ready or not, is being guided right and probably won't step to a title challenge for at least another 12 months.

Anderson just is not a name, here or in his home country.

I think everybody is bored of Chisora now.

Jalolov has had no professional exposure: I can't even think of what he looks like. I get he's this standout amateur but I think I stopped watching the Olympics after Joyce got jobbed by Yoka in the final it was so long ago.

I DO NOT see what people see in Torrez. I have really tried, because people hype him on here, and have watched some of his fights. He's too small, his "frightening KOs" have come against weak opposition and some are pretty questionable. He has fast hands but a points win over Vianello, his best win, doesn't convince me he'll even become a legitimate top 10 guy. He's a tough sell.

Joshua isn't fighting any young lions after Dubois: just big fights for him now. Plus Eddie is not feeding him to a Queensbury fighter unless it's gazillions, which Fabio doesn't bring.

That leaves Kabayel, Dubois, Zhang (who is probably still considering retirement after the beating Kabayel put on him), Hrgovic and Ajagba.

Lawrence Okolie calls for title shot vs. Fabio Wardley, labels WBO champion a 'basic night'

Lawrence Okolie has called for an all-British world heavyweight title clash with new WBO champion Fabio Wardley.

Okolie is putting the finishing touches on the preparation for his first outing in Nigeria, which takes place in Lagos on December 19.

There is no opponent confirmed for Okolie, and when The Ring reached out to the event’s organisers with just a week to go until fight night, the situation was described as "to be confirmed."

But Okolie has already set his sights on an ideal next opponent, should he return from the Nigerian capital unscathed.

“Oleksandr Usyk didn’t want to fight Fabio Wardley for whatever reason so he becomes the champion,” Okolie said. “I think he earned it and that’s the fight that I want next if I win this one.

“I think the most direct route to a world title would be Fabio because he's a world champion now. It's a fight that will be spoken about behind the scenes, but I do want that one. ... I think Fabio is a much easier fight than Usyk will be.”

Wardley (20-0-1, 19 KOs) stopped Joseph Parker in the 11th round of their London thriller in October to claim the WBO interim title. When then-undisputed champion Usyk opted to vacate his full title, Wardley was elevated.

Okolie (22-1, 16 KOs), former cruiserweight world champion, had been highly ranked with the WBO but dropped out of their top 15 altogether in November. He remains No. 1 with the WBC, who called for a final eliminator between Okolie and another Brit, Moses Itauma, during their convention earlier this month.

Itauma is set to face Jermaine Franklin in Manchester on January 24 and it is unclear whether or not he will go on to fight Okolie should he win at Co-op Live Arena.

On the WBC situation he said: “That and the WBO are the two main routes for me and I believe by the time we get to summer of next year, I'll be in a world title fight one way or another, WBC or WBO.”

Wardley has been a target for Okolie ever since he stepped up to heavyweight 12 months ago — before the Ipswich puncher even had a belt.

When asked what made Wardley, who has dropped every single one of his opponents to date, an attractive proposition for him, Okolie said: “Well his manager is Dillian Whyte. I didn’t like that. That was the first and most easy reason.

“Secondly, it's because when I watch him stylistically, I think he's very, very exciting and dangerous. However, he's got holes that kind of match up well with my style. For example, if you watch his fight against [Justis] Huni or his fight against Parker, these guys are maybe 6ft 3in, with shorter limbs who are good combination punchers.

“But I just think a longer, more explosive puncher is going to be able to capitalise on his mistakes a little bit better before he gets off his rallies because his rallies are world class. When he starts touching fighters and getting into the mode and the crowd starts screaming, he's fantastic and he'll be a handful for anyone.

"But I think before he gets to that point, if you're able to kind of execute your own game plan, I think it will be a pretty basic night."

Why ? he didn't ask to be handed the title, he's decent and respectable, is exciting and will fight anyone and he's not responsible for the decision of the ref to stop the fight with Parker. I like him and hope he goes on a good run of wins and earns some good paydays.

He should rematch Parker. It was an excellent fight and a controversial stoppage. If there was any justice...

Eubank got splatted by Liam Smith convioncingly and got a rematch. Whatever was or wasn't in the contract Parker deserves the fight.

I don’t agree. He should go forward. I’m bored of all these rematches when big name fighters only fight twice a year

Reality hits Fabio Wardley, career takes flight as major heavyweight player entering 2026

Fabio Wardley was sitting in the departure lounge at Heathrow Airport with his partner and young daughter when the phone rang.

A little more than a week had passed since he registered the best win of his career to date, an 11th-round stoppage of Joseph Parker at London’s O2 Arena, and he was off on holiday with his family to celebrate.

Although that victory had gleaned the WBO interim title, he did not expect to board the plane to Dubai that day as the 11th world heavyweight titleholder in Great Britain’s history. He had no idea that Oleksandr Usyk had decided to vacate his title instead of arranging a fight with him, thus elevating Wardley to the top spot.

“I answered the phone and it was my management team explaining the situation,” Wardley tells The Ring.

“They just told me what was going to happen, how it’s going to go and that it should come out in the next few hours to give me a heads up. They said congratulations and everything then hung up. It was a bit like someone calling you quickly and telling you you’ve won the lottery and you’re like, 'Right, OK. Cheers.'

“It’s a strange way to win a world title. I put the phone down and now I’m world champion but before that I wasn’t. I put the phone down and just stared off into space for a second. I thought, 'I’m world champion, am I? I better update my Instagram.'

“It did not feel real. Nothing changes in that moment, but everything changes. Immediately in that moment, everyone thinks it's all gone crazy but it hasn’t really. I still got on the plane, the pilot on the plane didn't bow at my feet or anything.”

Given he had just four white-collar fights and now 21 as a professional, Wardley’s surge to his new position as world heavyweight titlist is undoubtedly the fastest in history. His promoter allegedly described the feat as one of the most incredible stories he’d seen in his 45 years in the game but, despite that achievement, the 30-year-old from Ipswich admits his surreal airport phone call was not exactly how he would have liked to have claimed the belt.

“It's dumb to say that there's a way to grumble about winning a world title,” he said. “But I guess this is it.

“The most annoying thing from my perspective is why didn’t Usyk just vacate his belt before me and Joseph fought? Because now I’ve got to defend it to really feel like I've earned it and whatever else.

“But if it was actually on the line in that fight, which, for all intents and purposes it was, then that would have been a solid way to win the world title. If you were going to give it up eventually anyway, then you should have just put it on the line.”

Usyk's decision to vacate the WBO belt capped a curious few months for the two-time undisputed champion from Ukraine. He knocked out Daniel Dubois to reclaim the IBF belt at Wembley Stadium in July with what was arguably his best performance at heavyweight.

The Ring Magazine champion was then mandated to face Parker, who was the WBO’s interim beltholder, but he was granted a medical extension on that requirement because of a back injury, despite a video surfacing of a seemingly injury-free Usyk dancing. While he recovered, Parker opted to fight Wardley instead of waiting around. It is a decision that he may now regret.

It has been suggested that Usyk held onto his belt in case Parker beat Wardley and would have pressed ahead with a defence of his undisputed title against the New Zealander in that case. However, when Wardley knocked out Parker, Usyk decided not to pursue a clash with him.

Instead, he has spoken openly of his desire to face former WBC champion Deontay Wilder, the 40-year-old Bronze Bomber who has lost four of his last five 12-rounders. Negotiations are underway. In Wardley’s eyes, it is an unusual case of cherry-picking by Usyk.

“If you look at Usyk he seems like the type of guy who does not cherry-pick his opponents,” Wardley says. “But then he picks someone like Wilder who has barely fought for the last year or so.

“But don't get me wrong, he's also earned the right to do what he wants. He beat Tyson Fury twice, beat Anthony Joshua twice, beat Daniel Dubois twice. He has earned a bit of a right to fight who he wants, but it just seems out of character.

“I think it's just because he set that precedent for himself, people have a certain expectation that he’s not the guy that does that. He’s the guy that always takes on the hardest challenge around. So him not doing that just makes people think hang on, what's going on here? What are you doing? What are you up to?”

The same can now be asked of The Ring’s No.2-rated Wardley (20-0-1, 19 KOs), who will return from his lengthy holiday before putting his feet up for his first Christmas as the world heavyweight titleholder and also his first as a dad.

There is an expectation that he should return around March or April with the WBO still yet to deliver what a statement described as the "next relevant steps regarding Wardley’s first mandatory defence, including timelines, challenger designation and any additional measures required pursuant to WBO regulations."

Moses Itauma, his fellow undefeated Brit and Ben Davison stablemate, is No. 1 with the WBO while Filip Hrgovic and Zhilei Zhang sit second and third. Dubois, still yet to box again following his defeat to Usyk, is fourth.

“The heavyweight division is stacked all the way through to be honest,” Wardley says. “There are fights at every level as well and they're all good for a different reason or another, whether they're a good story or they're a good style matchup or there's a bit of history between some fighters.

“But there's just a bunch there for everyone to have a pick at. I don't think the next few years are going to be quiet for me at all. As long as there are good fights out there for me, I'm willing to give them a go."

The task at hand for Wardley is to ensure his legacy does not start and stop as history’s first departure lounge champ.

“He [Fabio Wardley] has got a lot of options because there are plenty of fighters who want to fight for a world title. There is an opportunity there, so we are looking to see what we can put together.

“In the meantime, Oleksandr [Usyk] is going to have to defend his other belts because the mandatories for them are there, as well. So, he has got some defending to do. I can’t remember what the next one is, but that will be called for pretty soon.

“Yeah, [Wardley vs. Chisora,] I would do that.

“Derek will be out soon, and he is in a mandatory position himself [IBF], so he has got to be active, or he will lose that spot.”
