Rene Tellez-Luis Torres tops February 27 ProBox TV show in Arlington, Texas

Rene Tellez Giron will face off against Luis Torres in a main event on February 27 at College Park Center in Arlington, Texas.

The show will stream on ProBox TV, according to a post on the promoter’s Instagram account. (Note: BS and ProBox are both owned by Garry Jonas.)

Tellez, 22-5 (13 KOs), is coming off a unanimous decision victory this past September over the 19-1 Jordan White. The 26-year-old Tellez came in overweight for that bout, which wasn’t the first time that he blew past a contractual agreement on the scale and then capitalized on that advantage within the ring.

Whether an intentional tactic or an alarming coincidence, Tellez has been able to ride his successes to a No. 9 ranking at lightweight with the WBO.

Torres, 22-1 (13 KOs), is a 24-year-old who, like his opponent, hails from Mexico. He suffered his sole defeat in October 2023, when he was stopped in the third round by the 18-3-1 Claudio Gabriel Daneff.

Torres is on a four-fight winning streak, which included TKO victories last year over a faded Nicholas Walters and the 18-1 Jonhatan Cardoso, the latter coming on the same card as Tellez Giron’s win over White. Torres is currently slotted 13th at 135lbs by the WBA.

Also announced for this show: welterweight Ruben Aguilar, 23-0-1 (20 KOs), against Luis Lopez, 16-2-4 (5 KOs); and former featherweight and junior lightweight title challenger Edward Vazquez, 18-3 (5 KOs), against Grimardi Machuca, 17-3 (14 KOs), who will try to break a streak of three consecutive losses.

A bout that had been slated for the undercard of Friday’s ProBox show in Arlington, Texas, will instead be the main event.

The original headliner at the College Park Center was supposed to be a lightweight clash between Rene Tellez Giron and Luis Torres, with a co-feature of welterweight prospect Ruben Aguilar versus Luis Lopez, and another undercard match pitting Edward Vazquez against Grimardi Machuca.

But the fight between Tellez Giron and Torres is off – a source with ProBox tells Boxing Scene that Torres is injured – and Vazquez-Machuca has been inserted atop the card.

Vazquez, 18-3 (5 KOs), is a former featherweight and junior-lightweight title challenger. The 30-year-old hails from nearby Fort Worth, Texas.

Vazquez’s first loss was a controversial split decision against Raymond Ford in early 2022. His second loss was by majority decision in a challenge of Joe Cordina for the IBF 130lbs belt in late 2023. Vazquez’s third defeat was clear, however – a seventh-round TKO at the hands of WBO 126lbs titleholder Rafael Espinoza in May 2025.

Vazquez returned in November with a fifth-round stoppage of the 14-1 Albeiro Paredes.

Machuca, 17-3 (14 KOs), is a 35-year-old from Venezuela who lives in New Jersey. He will try to break a streak of three consecutive losses, all by unanimous decision: against the 21-1 Pablo Vicente in May 2023; the 19-1-1 Branden Pizarro in September 2024; and the 16-0 Deonte Brown in October 2025.

Aguilar-Lopez remains the co-feature. Aguilar is 23-0-1 (20 KOs), while Lopez is 16-2-4 (5 KOs).

The fighters for Friday’s ProBox show in Arlington, Texas, have stepped on the scales.

The headline bout at College Park Center is a junior lightweight 10-rounder: Edward Vazquez came in at 129.8lbs while Grimardi Machuca was 130.8lbs.

Vazquez, 18-3 (5 KOs), is a former featherweight and junior-lightweight title challenger. The 30-year-old hails from nearby Fort Worth, Texas.

Aguilar, 23-0-1 (20 KOs), is a 25-year-old from Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. His lone blemish was a draw with the 17-2 Ricardo Salas Rodriguez in March 2023. That result looks better with time given that Rodriguez has gone on to score a good win over fringe contender Roiman Villa and is ranked by two of the sanctioning bodies.

Aguilar has won three straight since but has not been overly active, going 10 months between bouts in June 2023 and April 2024, then spending more than a year away before returning in June 2025 with less than three minutes of action for his first-round KO win over the 20-7 Issouf Kinda.

Lopez, 16-2-4 (5 KOs), is a 29-year-old from Corona, California. He fought to two straight draws when coming out even with the 14-2-1 Jesus Saracho in March 2025 and the 15-0-1 Adrian Vargas in July. Lopez’s past victory was in July 2024, when he outpointed the 23-5-1 Alan Sanchez.

The two losses on Lopez’s record date back to March 2023, when he dropped a unanimous decision to the 15-1 Angel Gabriel Beltran Villa, and a unanimous decision defeat by the 12-0-1 Saul Bustos in September 2020.
