Shannon Briggs vs Frank Bruno

Post by gilgamesh »

2 Heavyweight can crushers who for the most part came up short when they stepped up to the boys at the top. Each had a relatively weak claim to a World Title at one point, each lost it promptly in their next bout.

Who do you got in this one?

They both had somewhat weak Heavyweight chins. They both had poor stamina. They both had BIG punching power. They both had relatively poor defense (Briggs with the slightest edge there).

I think Briggs has more punch variety, and can mix up his attack better he also has just a little bit better defense on account of he remembers to move his head every once in a while whereas Bruno f*cking never does

However, Bruno I think has more fighting heart, and would be a bit more game, and willing to take a bit more to get it done than Briggs would. Not that he COULD take much more, but I think he'd be willing to keep trying more than Briggs if up against it.

Briggs was a better body puncher, Bruno had the better jab, Briggs was taller but had kinda short arms for his height so I'll bet that the reach is the same or maybe even in Bruno's favor which would again help him with his jab.

I got Bruno by KO in 4 in a wild slugfest with both guys hurt in the opening few rounds. It would either be that or they'd both be very, very cautious, and nervous of each other's power, and it may take longer to get there, but either way I figure an explosion of offense, and knockout one way or the other is inevitable in this matchup.

Shannon was more erratic than Bruno. So, you would back Frank. Briggs is a dangerous fight for him though. He's the sort of guy Lawless would have kept Frank away from unless there was a title on the line. Frank was great at what he did well, controlling fights behind the jab + big right hand. But he wasn't the most versatile guy.

It would be a slugfest, but imo I pick Briggs by decision or stopping Bruno late.

This would be a fun brawl. Too close to call but if I had to make a pick I'd slightly favor Briggs.
But this is evenly matched and it's anyone's fight

Briggs by stoppage. You are right. Lawless would have kept Bruno away from briggs. Bruno was very carefully matched. They did a good job with him.

Briggs was extremely carefully matched too. Their careers are quite similar really.
