Just wondering the general opinion of Gareth A Davies. Not sure if I find him knowledgeable or annoying wanting to be front and centre

Twat that thinks he's better than everyone else and is always looking for attention. He's never said anything that has made me feel like he's any more knowledgeable than an average casual.

I find him annoying, especially when he says a Mexican fighters name and puts on a Mexican/Spanish accent as he says it. He obviously has knowledge as he’s been in and around the sport for a long time.

Terrible and very annoying to everyone involved in boxing I'd imagine. Rawlings was caught on camera expressing distain for him I believe. Rawlings is a plum himself in my book. But how Davies has got himself into the position to be paid for his opinions on boxing is quite interesting as he is a prize pillock of the highest order in my book. Although I have to admire his ability to absolutely leech a living. I don't know who he appeals to at all. Is he supposed to appeal to the "cool dad" mid life crisis type of men? Clearly the youth must find him abominable and the older chaps must be pulling any remaining hair out of their head at the sight and sound of him. I'd rate Adam Smith well above him in terms of annoyance but Davies has definitely earned his stripes.

Think he’s only been around the sport a short while, probably around the time when Anthony Joshua came on the scene, before that I’m pretty sure he was a fencing journalist, then jumped on the boxing bandwagon and re invented himself as a long-time “boxing expert”.

He has that horrendous pomposity in his voice as well, a lot of the journalists and pundits who aren’t ex boxers at least seem to have a level of humbleness or respect in their demeanour.
I remember when IFL came on the scene and I think it was the first time they went to Vegas for whoever it was and Davies was there making out like ‘I’ll show you how media week is here in America I’ve done it for ages.’ And as we’ve both said above he hasn’t been on the boxing scene for that long at all.

Think he got into boxing mid-90's. Did a mix of sport before that, including croquet, but mostly footie I think.

He definitely has been around for a while. I remember in the "glory days" of Sky (Paul Dempsey era) - back way before the matchroom exclusive deal. They used to have people like Ed Robinson always go to the press watching the fight in the front row (who was winning etc) and Gareth was often asked.
He was definitely a regular on ringside, back when it was presented by Paul Dempsey in a proper studio - and not in the mock gym of the Johnny and Adam days.

To be fair - obviously I do not know either personally, but I actually think I prefer Gareth to Bunce. Bunce seem to have this "I am better than you" vibe. Maybe Gareth is the same away from his persona, but he hasn't actually said that out loud. Bunce has treated some of his loyal fans, who at one stage were helping him pay his bills, remember the "bring back Bunce" and then he did the tour with utter contempt on a few occasions once he got back on his feet and back on the screen / audio.
Bunce showed it again in a recent IFL (or something) interview when the interviewer actually mentioned Gareth and he said "he lets not talk about him" and he repeated it 5 seconds later - maybe there is genuine beef but I think it could have been handled better. The whole business with John Fury was hilarious - I don't know if Bunce was on a wind up on IFL when he gave it the "I am from the streets" talk, I am hard, I know how to handle myself and "know how to handle when people like John have lost it". He looked to me that he shat his pants when John was raging "I'm your friend john". No shame in that, they are about the same age and John was a pro heavyweight and still involved (of a sort) in the gym.
As actual boxing commentators, experts and journalists I prefer Bunce - but tend to listen more to Davies - for his slight eccentric views and whilst eccentric seems to be more genuine.
Comparing the Aussie bird who is shagging Kell Brook to Muhammad Ali is right up there with the greatest boxing meme ever - its up there with Hennessey "shades of Ali". One things for certain - I won't forget Muhammad Ali's name.

Ah okay fair enough, so he jumped into the boxing scene from his ultimate croquet coverage around the time Nas became a superstar, same as that other boxing great Adam smith.

A fantastic swordsman in his day. French ancestry. His real surname is Dartagnen but he changed it to Davies to blend in.

I really like Bunce, always have. His written word is superb and he has made a lifelong living out of boxing media, which can't have been easy. He's a proper journalist, even if he has to wax it a bit to stay afloat.
As for Gareth A Davies, I've just never been able to take him seriously. He's seems a try-hard, desperate to be a character but just feels more like an uncle having a mid life crisis.

Others on here have already highlighted his shortcomings, but even if I was to disregard the embarrassing attempts at being a 'personality', the single most damning indictment of Davies is that he doesn't seem to actually understand boxing.
He's immersed himself in the boxing scene for 25-30 years, but in all that time I genuinely can't recall any decent analysis from him. Compare his fight reports (rather than the drama surrounding them) with the likes of Mullan, Mcilvanney, Dixon, Hauser or Bunce, and it's utterly laughable. It's like someone engaging in cosplay of being a 'boxing man' vs the real deals.
For me it's clear evidence that he's not actually that interested in boxing itself, especially as there's absolutely nothing to suggest his knowledge and understanding of what happens in the ring has improved over the years.
What happens outside the ring is frequently a circus. He's just one of the clowns.
