LAS VEGAS - Joe Mesi sat in front of four respected doctors and eagerly awaited their diagnosis.
All of them told Mesi he could die if he ever boxed again.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission's medical advisory board Monday afternoon recommended with absolute certainty Mesi's suspension should be upheld.

All four doctors in attendance voted against lifting the suspension placed on the former heavyweight contender after he suffered multiple brain bleeds in his March 2004 bout with Vassiliy Jirov at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.

Shame, but I'm glad he's not being allowed to fight again. I remember when I watched the fight against Jirov I was thinking about what a poor defence Mesi had... he was taking lots of shots flush, little or no headmovement... hopefully he has some money and can do something else with his life.

I agree. Must be absolutely terrible for the young man but it's just not worth losing your life over.

He'll still be a hero in his home town.

He was really just a cash cow that was heading for brutal exposure against a big name. It's easy to get sentimental about him now it's over - but that's what 'everyone' saw him as when he was boxing. I imagine his father will probably be more pissed off than him that the end has come so soon.

He is only 31 and still has his wits about him, so I think he'll do okay without boxing. Remember he had a job before he decided on a pro career, okay it was menial, but it was still work. It's not like he was fighting to keep afloat the rim of the abyss.

Nevertheless, he showed surprisingly good boxing ability in that Jirov fight - though he did end up all over the place in round 10, and it must grate having to leave the ring where the last image of you is clinging onto the waist of a blown up cruiser, no less thanks to an illegal rabbit punch!

Anyway, in light of what we know now, thank goodness it wasn't a 12 rounder!

Oh man. And imagine if it had been Vitali he'd have fought after Barrett. Brutal early round stoppage. On the contrary, he'd probably still be boxing afterward.

Jirov is way overrated at heavy. I don't even know what he's doing. He had a draw (in my opinion) with Mesi, OK great. He was dominating Moorer on the cards before the stoppage. The issue seems to be that he is getting physically dominated by the bigger opponents (like Mesi and Moorer) and it isn't paying dividends.

Now he's suddenly "back" because he knocked out a tomato can who is without a single win over a bonified opponent on his record? Harsh.

He's wrecking himself. If he isn't careful I see him ending up just like Mesi. Done.

Yeah, Jirov's ruining his career by kidding on he's a heavy. Many, many fighters have done the same in the past - and even in the lower weights nowadays fighters are going for the (temporarily) hot divisions for the big fights/paychecks. Shane Moseley is a recent example.

It's a commendable thing to do for the fans, but you're really playing dice with your legacy if you go down that route.

Jirov, like Moseley, can hang and mix with the bigger guys, but when it comes to getting the win or looking impressive doing it... they just always seem to fall short.

And yes, Vitali - Mesi would have been slaughter.

Jirov shout shoot straight back down to cruiser and clean up, which I believe he would... mormeck shmormeck.

As for mesi ........ a shame but im sure he's made enough to set himfor life. Every cloud joe!!

Jirov's man boobies must weigh about 10lbs each, he could make cruiser if he cut them off.
