Felix Sturm to retire after July 11 fight

Former two-weight world champion Felix Sturm will bring the curtain down on his 25-year career on July 11.

The 47-year-old will face Granit Stein in a scheduled 10-round light heavyweight contest at Porsche-Arena in Stuttgart, Germany.

"I didn't want a quiet farewell," Sturm (45-6-3, 20 KOs) said in a press release. "After more than 35 years in boxing, I owe an incredible amount to this sport and wanted to say goodbye to my fans in a dignified setting.

"My last fight against Benjamin Blindert was a nice victory, but not the moment for me to just disappear from the ring. I wanted to consciously announce my last fight, prepare myself specifically for it and thank the people who have accompanied me for decades."

Sturm, who is a four-time middleweight champion and later claimed a version of the super middleweight title, had spoken to several possible opponents before landing on Stein (20-2-1, 11 KOs), who is 14 years his junior.

"There were many who talked a lot in public," he said. "But when it became concrete, hardly anyone was willing to really do this fight. Granit Stein and his team have agreed directly and clearly signaled that they want this fight. That's why this fight came about."

Felix Sturm ready to say goodbye after 36 years in boxing with a farewell fight

“One Last Dance” – Great emotions at the first press conference for Felix Sturm’s farewell fight

The first official press conference for Felix Sturm’s farewell fight made it clear five weeks before the event that July 11 will be a special evening for German boxing.

In the Porsche Arena Stuttgart, the scene of many great moments of his career, the former world champion faced the media for the first time together with his opponent Granit Stein.

The atmosphere on site was characterized by respect, anticipation and a palpable emotionality. Numerous media representatives, partners and guests had come to experience the prelude to a boxing evening that is already considered one of the most important German boxing events of the year.

For Felix Sturm, the fight is much more than just another appearance in the ring. It is the end of an extraordinary career. “I’m 47 years old and I’ve been doing this sport for 36 years. I always wanted to say goodbye in my own setting – in a way that my fans deserve and that I owe them,” Sturm explained.

The five-time world champion once again made it unmistakably clear that this will indeed be his last professional fight: “My family has had to do without me a lot over the years. There are things you can’t buy – these include character and your own word. I promised my family that this would be my last fight.”

It is no coincidence that the Porsche Arena was chosen as the venue. It was here that Sturm celebrated some of the greatest successes of his career. “The Porsche Arena is like a second living room for me. Here I became world champion four times. The atmosphere was always extraordinary. I’m looking forward to boxing in this setting again.”

Sturm was also highly motivated in sports. He paid respect to his opponent, but at the same time made it clear that he did not want to leave his farewell to chance: “Granit was the only one who accepted the fight immediately. I have great respect for that. He is a strong and above all combative boxer. That’s exactly why I’m looking forward to this duel.”

Challenger Granit Stein is looking forward to the biggest fight of his career so far with great anticipation. The Ingolstadt native made no secret of the fact that Felix Sturm shaped him at a young age: “When I started boxing, Felix Sturm was one of my role models. To be able to box against him is something very special. But at some point, role models disappear. Now I’m looking forward to competing against him and beating him.”

For Stein, the fight is also the chance to finally establish himself on the big stage: “Such a fight is a confirmation of everything I have invested in recent years. The discipline, the hard work, the deprivations – that’s what you work for as a boxer. I want to show people who I am.”

The 30-year-old was self-confident and also took up his already well-known comparison from nature again. “My name is my strength. My name is Stein. A storm can’t harm a stone.”

Despite all the rivalry, it was clear on the podium that both boxers have respect for each other. At the same time, it became clear that two generations and two different stories will meet on July 11.

Sturm spoke of a last dance, a dignified farewell and a great battle. Stein, on the other hand, sees the opportunity to make history himself and take over the baton of a new generation.

The response from the fans already underlines the importance of the event. Numerous supporters of both boxers from Germany, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, the USA and other countries have announced their attendance. When the first gong sounds in the Porsche Arena on 11 July, it will be about much more than just victory or defeat. It will be the last round of the ring for Felix Sturm, a boxer who has shaped German boxing for decades, thrilled millions of fans and created countless unforgettable moments.

If you want to experience this special evening live, you shouldn’t wait long. The demand is high, many of the tickets have already been sold. Be there when boxing history is written and one of the greatest careers of German boxing finds its emotional conclusion.

'Sad but grateful' Felix Sturm ready to retire on his own terms

Former two-weight world champion Felix Sturm will retire after boxing Granit Stein on Saturday at Porsche-Arena in Stuttgart, Germany.

The 47-year-old will conclude a 25-year career, which includes a series of world title reigns at middleweight and later super middleweight, though admits this is a bittersweet moment.

"On the one hand, I’m naturally sad but on the other, I can look back on an extraordinary career and I'm very grateful for that," Sturm (45-6-3, 20 KOs) told The Ring. "For me, July 11 is the perfect day for my boxing farewell as we're going to have a fantastic event. Lots of people have said they’ll be there; many prominent guests will be in attendance, as well as numerous people who've supported me along the way and of course, my family. The arena will be sold out. In terms of timing, everything just fits perfectly for me and I’m really looking forward to the evening."

However, while everyone inside the arena will be there to cheer Sturm, his opponent will be looking to make the most of his big opportunity. "Granit is a strong man and a formidable boxer," he said. "He’s always on the attack, looking to get in close, and of course knows this is my last fight. For him, this is the big stage to make a name for himself. I’m prepared for that. "I wanted a man who fights, who really gives it his all. Boxing someone who simply gives up after one or two rounds was out of the question for me. I want to say goodbye to fans who have supported me for decades in the way I deserve. I owe that to my fans – a strong opponent and a great fight."

The elder statesman of German boxing felt was the right time to bow out.

"I decided that it really was time to say goodbye to boxing," he said. "I'm 47 years old. I've had a great time and competed at the very highest level for an exceptionally long time.

"I have two children and a wife who's been by my side through it all for 21 years. My son is turning 17 and my daughter is also with me ... they both deserve me calling it a day now but I don't want to say goodbye secretly, I want to do it with dignity in the ring. That's why I've decided to announce my retirement well in advance.

"I actually made the decision last winter. After that, we started making plans and eventually found a suitable date."
During his career Sturm has enjoyed many big nights and can't single out one.

"My first world championship was a very special moment," he said. "The fight against Oscar De La Hoya was also an absolute highlight. Just like my fourth world title – that was also a very special fight."

"My amateur days, including the Olympic Games and the European and Junior Championships, are also part of that. Every fight has its own story, its special moment. Of course, there are unpleasant moments too but all in all, I'm very happy looking back on my entire career today."

Although he'll be stepping away from boxing as an active participant, he intends to remain involved in a different capacity, hoping to make a real difference.

"Among other things, I’ll be taking on a consultancy role for a company dedicated to boxing. I’m really looking forward to that," he shared. "They're on the right track to making German boxing great again, presenting the sport in the way it deserves.

"We have lots of brilliant young boxers in Germany, including a few lads from our team. Together, we’ll try to bring boxing right back to the forefront. I’m firmly convinced we can make boxing a huge success in Germany again."
