OSCAR COLLAZO VS. JOEY CANOY HEADLINES JUNE 20 SHOW

Ring and unified strawweight champion Oscar Collazo will defend his trio of world titles against Joey Canoy on June 20.

The two will headline a Golden Boy Promotions show, live and exclusively on DAZN from Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, California.

Collazo, rated No. 9 on The Ring's pound-for-pound list, is only too happy to remain active against the battle-hardened Filipino.

"Canoy is a very good fighter, he's highly ranked and got the pedigree," Collazo (14-0, 11 KOs) told The Ring.

"I'm just happy to be back in the ring, stay active and we're looking for the big fights. I'm very grateful, I want to highlight the lower weight classes and being the headliner in California is a big opportunity for me."

The 29-year-old will be making the eighth defense of his WBO crown he won with a seventh-round stoppage of former champion Melvin Jerusalem in May 2023, while defense four of the Ring and WBA championships claimed by stopping Thammanoon Niyomtrong (TKO7) in November 2024. Meanwhile, Canoy (25-5-2, 15 KOs) has been a professional since 2012 but not boxed for a world title until now.

The Ring's No. 5-rated contender for Collazo's crown, the 32-year-old southpaw similarly holds a win over Jerusalem (UD10) and is riding a 10-fight unbeaten streak dating back to May 2021.

In the evening's chief support bout, Ricardo Sandoval will make a belated first defense of his WBA and WBC flyweight titles against Mexico's unbeaten contender Yoali Mosqueda.

Sandoval was slated to face Olympic champion Galal Yafai in Sheffield, England on June 6 before the Brit withdrew through injury earlier this month.

The 27-year-old (27-2, 18 KOs) will end an 11-month layoff, having stunned Kenshiro Teraji with a 12-round split decision win to unify the titles in Yokohama last July.

Mosqueda (15-0, 12 KOs) has been a professional for five years and enters his career-best opportunity after pitching an impressive six-fight winning streak, including last time out with a ninth-round stoppage of Miguel Nieblas on February 14.

This marks the Mexican's second appearance outside his native homeland, having boxed to a first-round finish of Eldin Guinahon at Japan's famed Korakuen Hall in Tokyo two summers ago.

“I have been dreaming about this all my life,” said Canoy. “Thank you to my team Sanman boxing and Miguel Cotto promotions for giving me a chance to fight for my dream. I am training hard and I have a month to go. I will do everything to get an upset.”

“Oscar Collazo should be at the top of everyone’s pound-for-pound list, and on June 20th, he’s going to remind the world exactly why,” said Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya. “He has already beaten many of the best fighters in the division, and instead of taking the easy road, he continues to seek out the toughest challenges available and is stepping into the ring against a top contender in Joey Canoy because that’s what true champions do. Oscar never shies away from greatness; he runs toward it. From top to bottom, this card is loaded with some of Golden Boy’s most exciting prospects and proven contenders, guaranteeing an action-packed night of world-class boxing that Southern California fight fans will not want to miss.”

“Collazo is among the elite of boxing as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world,” said Chairman of Miguel Cotto Promotions, Miguel Cotto. “On Saturday, June 20, he will test his skill once again against Joey Canoy. It will be a true fireworks display in a clash of styles that fans cannot afford to miss.”
