my old worked for british coal for 35 years my grandad was aminer and as I said to you before I was born in the midlands MANSFIELD a mining town. Do you think that might qualify me to comment

Scargill did fornicate up majorly by not having a national ballot. They were never going to win but hindsight is 20/20 and all that. Scargill's heart was certainly in the right place and to many north of Mansfield he is still regarded with great affection.

The key thing that had Thatcher rubbing her hands in the darkest days of the strike was the foundation of the Nottinghamshire based (including Mansfield ) UDM which split the union. UDM went back to work and the demise of the industry was a fait accompli. Something of this sort was always going to happen though.

One of Thatcher's aides recalled later (I'm paraphrasing) "I was with Mrs Thatcher at a dinner shortly after the end of the strike when she said 'I know I shouldn't gloat about the miners. But I WILL gloat.'"

Although I probably know quite a lot less than the other big three of Payne, McNeilly and Wilson (firm of solicitors perhaps), I think what we all agree on is the indecent haste with which Thatcher pursued the destruction of the miners, and the obvious glee and swelled pride she felt having achieved her aim. It was totally in line with her persona, wrapping herself in the flag during the falklands etc...

Didnt really bother me mate, at the age of 7-8 the first time you smack someone on the nose (admittedly it took me a while to get the courage to do so) they tend to leave you alone after that.
