REPORT: LARA-TSZYU NEARLY FINALIZED FOR DECEMBER IN AUSTRALIA

Tim Tszyu is inching closer to getting a crack at being a two-division titleholder.

Representatives for Tszyu and WBA middleweight champ Erislandy Lara are in the latter stages of finalizing a deal for a headliner in Australia, with a targeted date in December, Fox Sports Australia revealed Tuesday.

“We’ve had great discussions with Lara’s team,” George Rose of No Limit Boxing, Tszyu’s promoter, told the outlet. “And I feel like something is close to being announced.”

Tszyu (28-3, 18 KOs), a former WBO 154-pound titleholder, last fought in July and scored a unanimous decision win against Errol Spence Jr. in a middleweight matchup. The 31-year-old Sydney native is on a three-fight winning streak since losing a second time to WBC super welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora in their rematch 13 months ago.

Tszyu is 5-3 since 2024, including a brutal third-round, technical-knockout defeat to Bakhram Murtazaliev.

Cuba’s Lara (32-3-3, 19 KOs) hasn’t fought since scoring a unanimous-decision victory over Johan Gonzalez in December. The 43-year-old Cuban was supposed to face Janibek Alimkhanuly, then the IBF and WBO 160-pound champ, but their title unification fight was scrapped once Alimkhanuly tested positive for a banned substance.

Gonzalez replaced Alimkhanuly on less than one week’s notice.

Lara won the then-vacant WBA middleweight title in May 2021 by starching Thomas LaManna in the first round. He has defended it just four times over the past five years by defeating Gary O’Sullivan, Michael Zerafa, Danny Garcia and Gonzalez.

Erislandy Lara, Jermell Charlo both in play for Tim Tszyu, Vergil Ortiz Jnr

They’re crunching the numbers, calculating the air miles and plotting the repercussions.

Both WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara and former undisputed junior-middleweight champion Jermell Charlo are in consideration for middleweight bouts against former 154lbs champion Tim Tszyu and current WBC interim junior-middleweight champion Vergil Ortiz Jnr, BS learned Tuesday.

At 43, Lara, 32-3-3 (19 KOs), possesses the valuable belt that has drawn interest from Australia’s popular Tszyu, 28-3 (18 KOs), who is coming off a July 26 unanimous-decision triumph over former three-belt welterweight champion Errol Spence Jnr in Sydney.

Lara hasn’t fought since a December unanimous-decision victory over Johan Gonzalez in Texas. He compiled 19 rounds in the four-plus years before that.

Yet, Charlo, 35-2-1 (19 KOs), who hasn’t fought in three years since his loss to Canelo Alvarez, is also seeking a title shot at Lara.

Charlo’s popularity is a strong draw in his home country, the finances might allow for a Charlo-Tszyu bout, one official familiar with the talks said.

If so, that would allow Texas’ Ortiz to finally pursue his first title shot as he’s decided to exit the junior-middleweight division rather than waiting out unified champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis’ chase of an undisputed crown with England’s Josh Kelly and California’s Sebastian Fundora wearing the other 154lbs belts.

Charlo, 36, has expressed a strong interest in returning to the ring, regardless of the opponent, BS was told, and a bout against fellow Texan Ortiz, 24-0 (22 KOs), would be possible if the finances can please.

Ortiz manager Rick Mirigian last month named Charlo as his top choice to be Ortiz’s next opponent.

Although Ortiz fights for Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions and Charlo is with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions, both promoters have DAZN as a streaming partner, which has led to a push for increased quality cross-promoted bouts.

An official told Boxing Scene that while both fights would be made for separate cards, it’s possible the winners will then fight each other.

Not a terrible match up and several notches above the opponents Lara typically fights, but I'll believe it when both he and Tszyu are in the ring and waiting on the opening bell.

I like Tim getting Lara, Lara is skilled but surely Tim is to fresh and too strong for a 43 year old.

I’d also like to see Tim vs a Charlo. But if Ortiz gets his hands on one they may be retired…

I would love to see Tim and Nikita vs the charlos… that would be a pretty cool concept for a card… and if it’s 1-1 you could swap opponents… and redo the brothers card…

And if it's 1-1 again you could do it a 3rd time even.

Same. Tszyu would be Lara’s best middleweight opponent by a huge margin, which is saying a lot given that Lara has sat on a middleweight alphabet belt for five years. I hope it happens

No Limit confirms Lara-Tszyu title fight, site and date TBD

Despite a late push from Vergil Ortiz, Tim Tszyu has snared a world title fight on home soil next month.

The former WBO junior middleweight champion will challenge Erislandy Lara (32-3-3, 19 KOs) for the WBA 160-pound crown.

Several reports in Australia suggest a late November date, with paperwork signed last weekend and venues across four cities interested in playing host.

In a press release announcing the news Tuesday, Tszyu said: "Lara is an great champion. He's slick, clever and stylistically very hard. He'll want to turn this into a chess match but I’ve never taken the easy road. I want the man with the belt, and I'll drag him into a fight he doesn't want."

"At 160 I feel strong, sharp and dangerous. Middleweight is my division now, Spence was just the appetizer. Having Jeff Fenech in my corner means everything. He knows exactly what it takes to win titles at multiple weights, and he's in my ear every single day. Liam Paro already did it this year, now it's my turn."

No Limit CEO George Rose was similarly excited.

"Lara is a nightmare for anyone. He's a genius in there and spent a decade making the best in the world look silly. Plenty of big names have found reasons not to fight him. Tim wanted and called for him by name. He wants legacy and the time is now."
Tszyu (28-3, 18 KOs) named the 43-year-old southpaw as a targeted opponent in the build-up to his points win over former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence on July 26.
After announcing his retirement post-fight, Spence later deemed it a 50-50 encounter when asked for a prediction in the post-fight press conference.

Lara scored two knockdowns en route to a wide 12-round decision win over short-notice foe Johan Gonzalez during his most recent appearance December 6.

Notoriously inactive, the Texas-based southpaw has boxed just four times since moving up from junior middleweight, scoring a first-round knockout of Thomas LaManna in May 2021.

That was for the WBA "regular" title, before his elevation to full champion in March 2023 after Gennadiy Golovkin relinquished the belt.

Former undisputed 154-pound titlist Jermell Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) is ambitiously slated to feature on the undercard. It comes almost four years after a Charlo-Tszyu fight was canceled after the American broke his hand training for their January 2023 title clash.

Brock Jarvis, who Keith Thurman stopped in three rounds last year, has been mentioned as a potential opponent while other domestic names are being sought.

Code Sports has named rising middleweight Callum Peters (9-0, 8 KOs) and light heavyweight Kirra Ruston (10-0, 10 KOs) as two that will feature, with more announcements to come.

Ortiz (24-0, 22 KOs), meanwhile, will make his middleweight debut later this year after two years and five fights at 154 pounds.

Rather than waiting for clarity at championship level, he will forgo his WBC interim titleholder status with a bout vs. Thurman expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Ortiz's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, unofficially confirmed as much during the Floyd Schofield-Lucas Bahdi weigh-in on October 9.

"We'll get him back on track, he'll have a world title shot soon," he said. "The 160-pound division right now is there for the taking and Vergil can steamroll right through everyone.

"I saw his struggles in his last couple performances in making weight, not in the ring fighting — he did phenomenal — but was struggling to make the weight. He's a big kid. At 160. We'll see his full potential, and every world champion you put them in line, he'll beat them all."

No Limit announce Tim Tszyu will challenge Erislandy Lara for WBA middleweight title

Australian boxing promoter No Limit has announced Tim Tszyu will challenge Erislandy Lara for the WBA middleweight title.

The news was announced in a press release on Tuesday (October 13) with a date and venue for the contest yet to be confirmed. There are several reports that the bout could take place in late November.

Former WBO junior middleweight titleholder Tszyu has been competing at 160lbs since his second defeat to Sebastian Fundora back in 2025. He has since racked up three wins, including a notable victory over former unified 154lb champion Errol Spence Jnr back in July.

Tszyu will take on boxing’s current oldest title holder in Lara. The 43-year-old is undefeated since a 2018 split decision loss to Jarrett Hurd and most recently defeated Johan Gonzalez over 12 rounds in December 2025 – Gonzalez was a late replacement for WBO and IBF middleweight champion Janibek Alhimkhanuly, who tested positive for the banned substance meldonium.

"Lara is a great champion. He's slick, clever and stylistically very hard,” said Tszyu of his foe. “He'll want to turn this into a chess match but I’ve never taken the easy road. I want the man with the belt, and I'll drag him into a fight he doesn't want.

The promoter of the event, No Limit CEO George Rose, understands the tough task Tszyu is up against.

"Lara is a nightmare for anyone. He's a genius in there and spent a decade making the best in the world look silly,” said Rose. “Plenty of big names have found reasons not to fight him. Tim wanted and called for him by name. He wants legacy and the time is now."
