to be fair
the jump from light heavy to cruiser is almost 15 percent
the next biggest jump between divisions is about 5 percent from middle to smw
even the jump from 187 to 200 is about 7 percent - still bigger than any other jump below light heavy. this is where the new division should have been all along instead of all those absolutely tiny increments lower in weight

Oh dear. I mean I get the 175 to 200 lbs is a jump but another weight division?? Not expected from the BBBofC, more like the IBO or something.
What the sanctioning bodies should be doing if they’re introducing new heavier divisions is remove some of the lower weight ones at the same time.
Minimum, light fly and super fly need to go from the world scene. I think BBBofC doesn’t recognise minimum and light fly…. But this new division is unexpected - I guess they want more income.

You go from an 7 pound jump between super middle and light heavy
then a 25 pound jump for light heavy to cruiser
if boxing wasnt already watered down by so many weight divisions in lower classes (literally differences so small you could take a sh!t that big), maybe people would be more willing to accept that this one actually makes some sense. but this new division comes into an already saturated playing field

Yeah I agree it’s a big jump. If boxing was properly regulated and fair, the weight divisions would be separated by an exact percentage rise in weight per class. Like 7% per class.. But that won’t happen because that would mean turmoil and a separation from historical weight classes.
Weirdly I think theoretically the Bridgerweight class makes sense with such huge heavies around, even though in practice it hasn’t worked out like that - mainly because of Usyk and possibly Holyfield previously. But it’s weird to expect and 218lb Usyk to potentially fight a huge 300lb Zhang

Exactly. Point well made. It’s a mess now really.

I don't fall out with it. It makes more sense than Bridger. The IBO have been less insane than the big 4 the last few years lol

The British Boxing Board of Control will be introducing a new Championship Weight Class with effect from 1st January 2027.
The new division will be placed between the current Light Heavyweight division of 12st 7lbs, and the Cruiserweight division of 14st 4lbs.
Light Cruiserweight will have a Championship limit of 13st 5lbs (187lbs), and as such will bridge the current largest weight gap between two divisions in the sport (25lbs) and will be available across Area, English, Celtic and British Titles.

It'll be as important and recognizable to me as Bridgerweight.
Hell if they keep it up I'll just ignore the Cruiserweight division along with it, and just consider certain Boxers to be in a wasteland that doesn't exist until Boxing sorts itself out.
I'm not going to start keeping up with extra weight classes just because others are greedy assholes. I'll just quit caring about fighters this size if they can't come up with something to name them, and stick with it.
There's Light Heavyweight, and fighters that don't got the balls to go up to Heavyweight and then Heavyweights.
Or you could just stick with Cruiserweight and only Cruiserweight, and that'd be fine too, but if there's 2 divisions after Light Heavyweight to Heavyweight then all those guys are irrelevant and should be ignored.

Not the worst place for it as there's a big jump in weight but look how weak cruiserweight is already. Light heavy tends to get some good boxers and has spells as a top divisions but this will water that down.
Wouldn't be against it if they got rid of some of the divisions that are 3 lbs apart to make room for it.

See this makes sense. It's a terrible gap compared to the rest.
Bit odd that the class above light heavyweight is now light cruiserweight though...

It's right to fill the gap, but I'd still love a return to 8 divisions. (One world title each, while we're dreaming.)

It isn't. There is no Light Cruiserweight

TBF that gap is pretty big, i have no problem with this.
114 lbs Minimumweight
120 lbs Flyweight
126 lbs Bantamweight
132 lbs Featherweight
140 lbs Lightweight
148 lbs Super lightweight
156 lbs Welterweight
165 lbs Middleweight
175 lbs Super Middleweight
185 lbs Light heavyweight
200 lbs Cruiserweight
200+ lbs Heavyweight
Same day weigh in: no more than +12 lbs for super lightweight and lower, no more than +15 lbs for welterweight and above.
One belt per class. Problem solved

All of you bastards who see things like this and try to defend it or justify it really piss me off.
Don't change any weight classes. Don't add any new ones. Eliminate some or do nothing with the ones that exist already. That's the only acceptable options to me.
Any so called "Light Cruiserweight" or "Bridgerweight" fighter I will simply call them what they are. A Cruiserweight or a Heavyweight who may or may not be in the Top 10 of that particular weight class as they often fight in Catchweight bouts.
I will not acknowledge a so called "Champion" in these weight classes as holding a Title.

I'd argue it evens out because humans aren't meant to be 300lbs and as a result the monster sized heavies come with their own handicaps. More mass means less acceleration, they carry a lot of dead weight etc.
I'd pick all the good 200-220lb heavyweight champs in history to beat Zhang. The 205 Holyfield would utterly destroy him.

Seems odd to have this at domestic level, but not at world level. Not saying I’m against the idea, but where can the British champion go in terms of the next level.
Might have been a good move for them to have formally approved Bridgerweight

Arguably an over the hill Holyfield beat Valuev when they fought. Really rough decision.

Jesus, good point. I totally forgot that one. I thought he beat Valuev easily. Weirdly, Haye/Valuev was very close.

I don't know how unpopular a view this is, but I've long believed in dropping everything below 126. If you can't bulk up to walk around at 9st I just don't think you're cut out to entertain as a fighter.
Space the remaining divisions 9-15lb apart up to 200.

I'd be fine with keeping Flyweight and Strawweight, although admittedly I'd probably barely notice if they were eliminated as would most Boxing fans.
But we don't need any of the Super/Jr. divisions. They're all needless. I know good fights happen here and there in some of those divisions, but those good fights would happen just the same in one of the traditional weight classes if that extra sh*t just wasn't there to muddy the waters.

They fall into the same category as women's boxing for me, where I think they'd really benefit from smaller rings and gloves, with longer rounds. 3 minutes for the women as widely agreed, and maybe 5x5 for the smallest men to mirror UFC. Most of those guys are just too fit and light-punching for the regular format.

Maybe Jake Paul could branch out with his MVP cards and start signing those guys too. Consolidate all that kinda stuff into one place.
The kinda people who are wanting to bet on those fights are the most die hard of the die hard fans for the most part. Or just the degenerate gamblers who are constantly looking for something else to wager on.
