Tony Booth

Evening all

I met Tony at the Hull card on Saturday night. Extremely kind chap, really giving of his time. He was getting up at 330am to drive the Argentinian opponent to Manchester airport but said he’d have a chat when he got back to the hotel after. I was leaving when he got back and he came over to my car and made sure he had a chat with me and recorded a video for a family member who started following him as a pro when he fought Kelly Oliver twice in the 90s (I went too they were two of the first pro fights I went to as we followed Kelly as he was a Lincoln pro).

He was such a kind chap. It made me go back and revisit his record. Not many people had a career where they fought both James Cook and Dereck Chisora. Gave me his number and offered to keep in touch. What a lovely fella.

Did he offer you any gear?

Just joking, I met him a few times on the small hall circuit years ago and he always was friendly. He'd be straight in the bar having a pint after a fight while the rest of the card was going on.

We dont seem to produce fighters like Tony any more. He was talented but went on the road and was always entertaining. Sprung some big upsets too.

Hope he's doing well in life, it's been quite colourful to say the least.

he averaged a win or draw every 3 fights, definitely one of the more dangerous journeymen when he wanted to be

Fought Franco Wanyama on Chistmas day 1992 in Belgium. Just sayin...

He was just a very kind person and spoke to everyone who came up to him and was very patient and they were relentless in approaching him and he gave everyone his time, turned down drinks as he had to get up early to drive the away fighter back and was really nice I was just impressed he was thoroughly decent

Went to Hull for training a couple years ago (totally un-boxing-related) and mentioned I was into boxing and knew Booth was a local lad. The instructor knew him personally and said everyone there did!

Must be a popular guy to go 52 wins from 118 fights and have Sky following him about for a whole series. Clearly talented too when you see him in action. (The fact that he had at one time the most wins of any active British boxer always makes me smile.)

Obviously there will always be plenty of what-ifs with a guy like that, but not everyone has the mentality of a contender.

His son is a nice lad too works in the sport on top of a day job, clearly raised him well - got a good degree, good job etc.

Tony was on the coffee as the poor sod was up at 330am!

I have the great honour of recommending each year the British Boxing Hall of Fame Centurions category. I had no hesitation in recommending Tony for the 2026 award, which he received earlier this month. A very good boxer was Tony.

I wonder who was the last Brit centurion with a winning record? I genuinely have no clue. Prob back in the 50s? Or maybe more?

On a quick search can’t find anyone after 1950 with Freddie Mills and Ernie Roderick. But surely there must be someone more recent?

Miles may be my favourite human being in the sport kept in touch with me when I was poorly too. A good man. It’s between him Jon Pegg and Joe G for top 3.
