Gents a mate of mine has asked me about obtaining some training gear he just want training stuff so doesnt have to be top of the range, now I got some sparring gloves and pads some time ago so have some idea but what would you recommend?

leather or plsatic coated gloves, size (i guess sparring gloves 14 oz or so would vbe best for a newbie).

but he also wants a stand alone punchbag, (well hang a lone) any pointers on size, length & cost would be appreciated.

thanks all.

For home use, I seem to remember protec being quite reasonable, I think they do one of those stand alone punch bags on the spring.

Have a look at http://www.protec-boxing.com

You sure this isn't for you J? :TU:

They've got a decent 5 foot heavy bag for 35 quid, including VAT, may even get one meself, seeing as I'm starting a new job I may actually be able to afford one.

That stand alone punch bag from Protec is the bees knees, All of my old club were envious when I bought that.

Although when you do become a sharper puncher it can really damage your hands as I am nursing a swollen hand now. It is quite easy to punch right through the foam and hit the metal in the middle of it. You have got to catch it right to do that and it is quite a rare occurance, but when it happens it is usually a good 10 minutes recovery before you right to hit it again.

Hey this site is showing that fight live, http://www.streamtvnow.com

I watched the Toney/Ruiz fight on it and they stream it in over 400kbs so very good quality. It's $3 a month subscription if you want to watch the ppv's. I recommend it, its saved me ££££ :)

Just checked out that protec site, very nice prices :D

On a similar point guys I am considering getting a vitamin supplement for gym-work etc and was considering either Maximuscle or Prolab.
Has anyone here used any or can recommend what works for them

Tao Sports in Green Lanes, Haringey is another good place for boxing gear.

http://www.taosport.co.uk/

Friendly bunch own there and you can get kitted out for everything.
I have a Protec 4 foot hanging heavy bag (sounds painful) and its lasted years. I used a bracket that I got from Tao and it is very strong, can do chin ups etc with no problems although you need good strong walls to fit it to. I think the bag & bracket were around £50.

If you're getting vitamins, buy Solgar, they make the best vitamin and mineral supplements, next best is quest.

I agree with james on Solgar and strongly recommend a cod liver oil with glucosamine sulphate as well. Excellent for your joints. If I miss a few days I have trouble on the stairs. 28 years old...

I've only used either Lonsdale or BBE kit for any sustained period and both have been good, although one pair of Lonsdale gloves spazzed up rather quickle. Currently got a pair of Pro-tec hook and jab pads and they're excellent.

Standalone bags I'm afraid I just don't like.

Blimey mate, 28 and dodgy knees! Are you part alsatian?

I'm 34, and my knees play up after a night of mad dancing, especially if I'm not getting any exercise, which until recently I wasn't.

Thinking of getting one of those angle protect bags, though the standalones are handy for home as you have more room, but they fornicating expensive.

Anyone ever had one of those water/air bags before?

I usually use rosemary and a clove or two of garlic, but each to his own I suppose.

How the feck are air bags meant to work? Wouldn't it need some really hard outer case?

No I haven't used the air/water backs - my stand alone one is sand based. Heard some good things about the water bags though.

Does anyone else not like the stand alone bag the only fault I can find with it is that it can damage your hands if you catch it right and you cannot really be used for kicks (although that doesn't bother me).

Do be honest, Cocunut is the first ever person I have heard say they are no good - be interested to find out other views because if there are better out there then I will need to look into it.

Nah, boss, family failing compounded by running, squats, rugby and tupping fat birds against Blackpool night club walls.

I used to have a BBE angle bag, it lasted a hell of a long time and got a real pounding before one of the straps broke. Quality bit of kit, I don't train with an angle bag now and I miss it. Important to hang it at the right height, mind.

Mate, maybe I didn't like it because it was new to me, or it was cheap or something, but, without wanting to sound like a wanker, I'm knocking on 15 stone and I do have a bit of power, I just didn't feel comfortable giving it full whack, which is what I wanted to. Didn't like the way the foam felt either, although I wasn't going through it to the metal core. I can definitely see how the movement works but I suppose I just couldn't be bothered putting in the work on making the transition from a hanging bag, which in truth probably moves less like a person...

Edit - just remembered another thing I didn't like was the ruddy great big base getting in the way of the old feet when I moved in close.
