Never seen this fight so i'm gunna need some help, i got told that Richie Woodhall took a hell of a beating against Calzaghe at the end of their contest & that Woodhall was pinned against the ropes taking a battering, is this true ???

I notice that Woodhall retired after this fight, was this because of the beating he took in this fight ???

Woodhall retired due to injury, he was scheduled to return on the undercard of Joe's fight following Woodhall against Toks Owoh for the WBU championship but it Woodhall kept pulling up injured.

I haven't seen this fight in a while and my memory of the end is poor, I don't think there was any complaints at the stoppage, but I don't remember it being hugely savage - although I could be wrong.

Woodhall put on a good display early on but in the later rounds Calzaghe got on top and finished the job. Richie fought all the way though and gave it everything. Haven't seen it for ages, but I remember it being a good fight.

I wouldnt say Woodhall took a beating. Calzaghe floored him in the 10th i think and then backed woodhall to the ropes and threw about 5 punches and the ref stopped it. I thought it was a premature stoppage but Calzaghe was way ahead on points and Woodhall was only going to take more punishment. But Woodhall did land some cracking right hands on Joe.

Woodhall was tactically brilliant that night, if only he was a little stronger I think we would have had a new champion.

If Brewer would have fought like Woodhall did tactically, I think he would have beaten Joe.

Woodhall did put up a good fight but he still lost nearly every round. He was hurt in the first round so maybe that affected his performance slightly. Maybe he could of done better but its going to take a really class fighter to beat Joe at Super-Middleweight. But fairplay to woodhall he took on Calzaghe possibly at Calzaghes prime at put up a good fight.

Woodhall must also be credited for retiring when the time was right, and sticking to it.

Woodhall got through with some good right hands on the night and gave a good account of himself, i don't think he took a beating at all. He made more of a battle of it than most of Calzaghe's fall over jobs.

I think it was a long term injury to his right elbow that had been a problem since before the Holmes fight. If you whatch some early Woodhall fights and then some of his later ones you can see that he had to adapt his style slightly and shorten his right hand punches because of it.

As for the Calzaghe vs Woodhall fight I was there that night and Woodhall put up a very good and brave fight but Joe was on top form that night and had too much speed and power for Richie. Woodhall took some punishment but in my opinion 'beating' is too strong a word.

That fights seems to have been somewhat of a forgotten one, which is a shame as it was a good domestic fight and one of Calzaghes better performances.

Although the shine was taken of being there that night with Paul Ingle being taken out of the ring on a strecher before the main event.
