WBC to review Corrales-Castillo

from fightnews.

Citing "furor" about the Diego Corrales-Jose Luis Castillo clash, the WBC is naming a committee to review the fight. A WBC press release states, "There have been many protests from most of the press in Mexico and Latin America, as well as the Federal Boxing Commission in regards to the performance of the referee, who, among other things, let approximately 40 seconds go from the moment of the second knockdown to the continuing of the action in the tenth round....The lightweight championship of the world was held under the trademark of the WBC, and is our obligation to respond to all matters that receive a request, and we think that there was something that was done wrong. It is our obligation to those who trust the WBC's impartiality, rules, and actions."

How can the WBC do this, I thought the referee did a good job, in the rules it states that the mouthpiece must be replaced before the fight can continue, so what was the ref supposed to do, when Corrales took his mouthpiece out after the second knockdown, let him continue?

What would happen then if Corrales had suffered serious mouth damage, which has already happened once in his career against Casamayor.
The Ref would have got slaughtered, he was in a no win situation, put it back in and give more time to Corrales, or let it continue and be called into putting Corrales in danger of serious damage.

As for the stoppage i thought it was perfectly timed, Castillo was gone and his hands were by his side, another couple of shots could have caused him career ending injuries.

i've not seen the fight yet, but will tonight, but I suppose if enough ppl complain then the least they could do is review it, makes sense. I think its a good move at least, makes the WBC 'more responsible'. Unlike the WBO who should review countless dodgy decisions.

The way the statement is worded seems to be as if the WBC have already made up their mind the Ref was in the wrong . It states

" The lightweight championship of the world was held under the trademark of the WBC, and is our obligation to respond to all matters that receive a request, and we think that there was something that was done wrong."

Shame on you, take back that comment...the WBO is the premier World Boxing organisation

It's just bollocks they're spinning because they haven't settled on an immediate rematch, which would clearly be the match that would net them the most cash by a country mile, unless one of the super-feathers moves up.

Is it so outlandish to say that the majority of these sanctimonious sentiments are in truth driven by greed?

They'd be better off reviewing their own ratings I think

Nobody wants to see fighters get hurt, but if someone deliberately spits out their mouthpiece, then they should have to fight on regardless, risking a broken jaw and smashed teeth. It sounds brutal, but boxing is a brutal business and if you bend the rules then you should have to face the consequences. If you drop your guard you get hit, if you turn your back on your opponent, you can be DQ'd, and if you spit your mouthpiece out, tough shit.

Of course, the problem is, in cases where the mouthpiece isn't deliberately spat out, and a fighter gets badly injured as a result.

I think that Castillo would almost certainly have knocked Corralles down again and won the fight had Corralles not had so long to recover. He did get a long long time extra, considering how slowly he got up from the second knockdown, and how stiff his legs looked.

Sounds like the WBC are going to try and award their title back to Castillo pending a rematch.

I hope their is a rematch, i see Corrales Boxing a different fight and being a lot smarter by keeping the fight long and on the outside. However a rematch has to happen, but let Castillo have a breather first!

Yep.

It will be interesting to see if the rematch happens.

I'm not questioning Corrales in anyway the man has shown tremendous heart, but I have notice there hasn't been even talk of a rematch of the close fights in which he has had the W. Casamayor, Freitas and now even Castillo.

When he lost vs Casamayor he was begging for a shot at redemention, same with Mayweather (although he hasn't had the chance yet). However, doesn't seem to be talk of giving Castillo, Freitas and Casamayor the same chance.

I reckon regardless of WBC decision, there's a good chance Diego moves up to take on Tszyu, after he's whacked the bejesus out of Hatton.

There've been rumours he's heading that way for awhile.

Hmm, wouldn't that be an interesting prospect. I think he would possibly be an even bigger puncher at 140, he's got the right frame to move up the weights, but his ability to absorb a shot would continue going down. It's interesting because he is so dangerous when hurt.

I think the rule should be that if you spit out the mouth piece intentionally you get a point taken off, or you are not allowed to pick it up if it is a case similar to this fight. And if it happens repeartedly (as in this fight) then you get DQed and the victory goes to your opponent.
Werent the rules like that once upon a time?

Does anyone here think the Ref did a bad job?

Personally i think he did ok, i know Corrales took his mouthpiece out , but the Ref is there to do his job, and had to replace the gumsheild.

I'm not sure it was 40seconds between the knockdown and the fight resuming .

If he's killing himself to make weight (and with that frame it can't be easy) then I don't think a move up will do his chin any harm - maybe the opposite. A bit more filled out and maybe his ability to absorb a shot will improve. That said, I doubt it will improve sufficiently to last 12 against Tszyu. Mind you, Tua's not stopped many people who in their careers rode the kind of beating Corrales did at the weekend...

The problem is, he was on his feet before 10 on each occasion.

I know, it's massive, but I find it boring as fornicate unfortunately, though I could probably write about it easily.

I think if he had spat it out 2 more times he would have been disqualified. Though let's face it, was it even possible for the referee to do no wrong? Can you imagine if he had disqualified Corrales after the 'second' time he spat it out? There would be an outcry. People would be screaming 'the fight should have went on and he should have had a point taken off', or 'he wasn't completely conscious of what he was doing.' etc, etc.

At the end of the day every top class in-fighter has their dirty tricks. Castillo is probably a more dirty fighter than Corrales. This 'controversy' is just the Latin media, with the help of Arum, showing its muscle with the WBC.

Exactly! No-one else is complaining to the same degree outside of Latin America. And isn't the WBC a Mexico based company?

As a couple of people have already pointed out, it was only the second time he spat out his gumshield, and anyway, there's no guarentee that Corrales would have gotten up to KO Castillo. He took a big gamble, because if he hadn't won by KO, he would have lost the decision anyway.

Its a tough call, mmm I'm not saying the stoppage was bad but, my god Corrales got up on about 9 1/2 after the first KD and was groggy on his feet and not in a position to defend himself - really a fighter should be up and in a guard position (or hands up) by 10.

When Corrales pulled him gum shield out for the second knockdown, I think many a ref would have waved it off.

Its kind of the like the Mock vs Haye stoppage, yes I think Castillo was looking out of it at the end, but I think there was a stronger case waving the fight off after the second knockdown - Corrales was out of it then also.

Like Haye vs Mock - Haye was more badly hurt than Mock but the ref gave one the benefit and not the other.

Had I been refereeing the fight, Castillo would have won via a 10th round knockout.

Agreed great fight, but brutally unfair on Castillo. He should have dropped down and taken out his mouthpiece

I wholeheartedly agree. The ref done well IMO. You can understand why latin America is annoyed though, but whats the solution

The WBC are bent bastards, Castillo got beat fair and square. Had he taken one more punch he woulda been comatosed. Corrales got up and got a point taken off for what he did. End of.

The ref did his job as it should be done. He stopped the contest at the right time and should not let a fighter box on without his gum shield/mouth piece.

At first I thought he was a little too quick to stop it, but when they showed it from a different angle it showed he made an excellent intervention, absolutely spot on.

The referee jumped in to stop Castillo taking unessesary punishment. Corrales had already landed around 8 punches, the last two were full blooded power shots. At the time of the stoppage, Castillo was out on his feet, and Chico was getting himself into position to unleash more leather at Castillo's unprotected head. I thought the stoppage was spot on.

The more I watch it, the more I think Corrales was lucky not to get stopped.

Watch the first knockdown, the ref just gives his clothes a rub down and just asked him once "are you okay". He might have responded with a yes, but his hands were down and his wasn't okay by his legs (very unsteady).

The ref had deemed him fit to fight before he looked for the gum shield (1st knockdown) - he should have had a more thorough check, because he wasn't okay.
