Bowe - Zumbrun -although strange to see Bowe so out of shape- is a pretty good scrap

Good performance from Calzaghe I thought. Wouldn't mind seeing his new missus put on a performance either.

Not bad, I thought he was a bit ragged.
His bird is lovely.

The old Kraut TV, they do love to focus in on the fighter's birds. To be honest I'm not sure it was appropriate to be seeing the aghast Mrs Veit wincing every time her husband got a belt.

Impressive, but that right hand lead is very susceptible to a left hook counter. Easier said than done, especially if an 8 foot 6 guy can be rendered so inept, but the opportunity's very much there

For who - Tocker Pudwill? Come on Frank, let's see Joe in a decent fight now.

I thought he was ragged myself. One of the worst I have seen him for punch form.
Mario Veit should be renamed Mario Sheit.

a wrestling match with her could be nice

The Calzaghe fight wasn't very impressive, Veit was mainly in survival mode, his missus showed more enthusiasm. Calzaghe-Veit III anyone? Steve Holdsworth was sucking Calzaghe off a bit as well, it was nauseating at times. "Ooh that blinding handspeed"...snooze
As for the other fights well three imported Brazilians of limited ability...nice work

Petkovic looked okay first time off and Boxed better than his timid showing against Nelson, however he was tagged a few times by a perenial loser and i doubt he will rise above this sort of level.
Dimitri Sartison looked good with that early right hand but got tagged with a couple of solid left hooks and a better opponent would have punished him. Still he looked ok offensively but it's not hard to see how guys can pad there records so easily these days with foes like that.
That Egon Roth fellow was pathetic, i don't think he threw a worthwhile punch all night. He just pawed out the jab and didn't use his size advantage at all, with a 11-0 (10) record you have to wonder who he has been fighting, Audley Harrison rejects? He didn't look anything special though and i was glad when the chunky Brazilian got chucked out.
Calzaghe's missus was fit but check out the lip job

She's got a Victoria Beckham pout.

Didn't think Joe was at his best but is a wrold championship fight
he is bound to get caught - i think was very impressive in snatches and proved he is by far and away the best super mddle in the world
joe - spank lacy then move up
steve689 - at least give the guy some credit
he may be open to counetrs but his chin is solid and with his style i just think he will so hard to beat for anyone 168-175
i think only tarver has a shot
johnson good fighter does not do anything well enough

For what? Beating a stiff, upright, scared guy he has already KO'd in a round? I used to like Calzaghe but then i got wise to his career...he will never get a big fight because he doesn't want one, call it lack of ambition but then again picking up hundreds of thousands of pounds for half a nights work knocking out a stiff can have a that effect on your ambitions

I think it's easy for everyone to say his style is difficult for 'everyone from 168-175' but when was the last time Calzaghe beat anyone truly dangerous, well it was against Brewer, and guess what, he had to get off his arse to beat him. Sure, Calzaghe put Brewer away, but he has been dropped by Salem since, and you have to wonder what happens when he is in with someone with more ambition than Salem. Salem held back after decking Calzaghe, something you can bet your life that Lacy will NOT do.
I am picking Calzaghe to beat Lacy due to his greater experience and more variety of work, plus overall better boxing skills, but if he gets complacent, Lacy certainly has the aggression, physical strength and punch power to punish him. He may not be as big a puncher as we all initially thought, but he hits harder than Salem.

You mean Mitchell, who had just lost decisively vs Ottke the fight before.

Yes sorry, Mitchell, but yes, that's the point there were two ways of looking at that fight, one was that Calzaghe destroyed Mitchell with a two handed ferocious attack. The other was that he shouln't have been getting knocked down in the first place. Credit to Calzaghe for getting up like that, but his defence seems to have gone out the window more and more, strangely, the exception to that was the Mkyrthcian fight, where Calzaghe actually boxed quite conservatively early on, lord knows why, but he looked pretty smooth.

Maybe Calzaghe isn't declining, he's just inadvertantly lowering his game to the level of his opponents, something he's done plenty of times in the past. In fact we've been through all this before with Joe, after he beat Eubank and sqeezed past Robin Reid we had some fairly grim struggles with the likes of Rick Thornberry and David Starie. Things were so bad that after he battered Omar Sheika's big mouth shut Calzaghe actually wept tears of relief in the ring because it was his first decent performance in quite a while. I think he'll beat Lacy, and he'll show his best form when his opponent demands it.

take your point to a degree steve689 - i would agree that he has not beating anyone 'really dangerous' but has beaten a lot of good fighters - you know the names i won't go into them again!!!
I respect what you say (remember i was in knots on a previous topic!!) - however take issue with this 'he's a bully' type argument you seem to keep on mentioning
I don't belive for one second he has ducked anyone, i think he's injured too much thats a different point - do you honestly believe if he was offered johnson or tarver next fight he would say no??
i believe and i am being careful here that its more a case of 'allegedly' being too stubborn with his 'i want all the aces for my fighters' attitude.
Mick hennessey i think would do wonders for calzaghe although the best shows i have ever been to are warren shows so its a difficult one
i agree though 2005/2006 if joe does not get a big fight its a joke
question steve689 take your unbiased head off - who at 168/175 has the style to beat Joe? who does something very good ie. punch, chin at a top world level to beat him?
i think only tarver has a shot but hey thats boxing

On the evidence of recent performances, there are a number of fighters who would have a chance. Whether they won or not is another matter, but Calzaghe isn't a hugely dominant force at the moment. Perhaps come the time of a decent challenge, he will snap back into shape, but perhaps he won't, fighting against the opposition he has had lately, isn't great preparation.
Would have been interesting to see what Calzaghe might have done with Vanderpool as a comparison with Lacy's recent effort.

Wrists i take your points fully on board mate but the one main reason i take issue with Calzaghe is because when he should have been busting a gut to get the big fights he wasn't he was sitting at home making easy defences. Does he really think Hopkins and company would be rushing to Cardiff to fight him after watching him demolish Tocker Pudwill? Of course not. Calzaghe should have been DEMANDING to get himself onto the big fight undercards for exposure. If the yanks don't know who you are you aint going to get very far. Look at the reaction he got when he beat McIntyre on the Tyson-Nielsen undercard, it was a step in the right direction undeniably...we needed more of the same.
A while back there was a rather public spat between Allegedly and Hatton over big fights, months later allegedly delivered Hatton-Tszyu, to his credit allegedly also delivered Calzaghe-Johnson...if you want something in Boxing you need to keep banging on the doors of the right people.
Has Calzaghe been banging those doors?

One of Calzaghe's biggest sicknote gaffes was to pull out of a spot on the De la Hoya v Trinidad card years ago which might have got him some tremendous exposure in the States and more momentum to get some big fights going. But pull out he did with some injury or other and Johnny Nelson took his place, needless to say the American public were not demanding to see more of Nelson afterwards...

Just saw the Bowe fight on Eurosport.
Bowe looked an old tired fighter.
