He was also turning into a big name trainer a while back, he had that fruitcake Ibeabuchi doing good things. Don't hear so much about Cokes as a trainer now.

I remember Curtis Cokes in Fat City. That IS a great film!! Directed by John Houston and starring Stacey Keach, it was filmed in Stockton, Ca, Yagi Lopez's hometown. I know it is out on VHS because I have rented it from my local video store, but don't know if it has been released on DVD. The book is also a great read. Judging by Coke's performance in Fat City, I think he could have had a second career in the film business. I would be curious to know why he didn't pursue that.

Indeed, for me FatCity is the best boxing film I've ever seen, wonderfully understated but very powerful because of it and the acting is topnotch from everyone, including the boxers. Art Aragon has a part in it as well.
I also thought Cokes was very good in the film and looked a natural actor. The impressive thing about his performance is that he doesn't box or fight in it, its a real character part. I was really taken by his charachter in the film the first time I saw it and I didn't realise at the time who he was. Great Film, and book!.
