If Larry could survive the early onslaught, he would win by stoppage around the 11 or 12th round or take a 15 round decision.

If not,

Dempsey by KO in 1, 2 or 3,

But I would favour Larry.

>>>If Larry could survive the early onslaught<<<

Without a doubt...Dempsey was not Earnie Shavers, or Renaldo Snipes and if he hurt Holmes it would be over, but if not...Holmes would probably box his ears off like Tunney did! I'd go with Dempsey KO 3.

Barry - The larry holmes that got knocked down by snipes was comming into that fight at 97.9 kg and snipes was in at the almost the same weight and hadnt lost a fight and was in his prime, he was also a great figter who gave everybody a tough fight, larry even says himself he was still fresh when he got knocked down by snipes, the larry that got knocked down by shavers was said to be one of the hardest punchers ever in the sport!!!!!, and larry took the hardest punch of his career. to be knocked down by him isnt an insult! , larry knocked him out still after climbing of the floor.

on the other hand dempsey weighing 87kg at his best!!! lost to Fireman jim flynn a man that didnt hold a very good record, and even when he faught him he had already lost 2 fights and drew 3

larry and dempsey are two different classes, demspey never even faught black people, boxing had evolved much more athletically when larry came to the stage and much more boxing ability and class, you can not rank larry and dempsey in the same class, if demspey faught larry it would be a reply of Jack Johnson verse Ketchel

For the record, Dempsey fought three African-American boxers!

Being knocked nearly out by Earnie Shavers certainly isn't anything to be ashamed of as Shavers ius without a doubt one of the hardest hitting fighters in history and Holmes showed real heart and desire to get back up and go on to win in that bout, but like I said Shavers was not in the same class as Dempsey.

Dempsey was knocked out by Jim Flynn, who although he doesn't have the best looking record, he was one of the quality heavyweights of the time with an overall record of 66-44-20 (46 KO), but what is most important is that Dempsey was not prime when that happened. I'll take the Jack Dempsey that fought on July 4, 1919 versus Jess Willard against just about any other heavyweight in history, except maybe Ali and Joe Louis at their very best!

what were there names? the african americans he fought?

my dad was telling me he remembers reading an article in a boxing magazine that was written by Dempsey and he said, that he was lucky that he didnt have to fight blacks because he would have gotten beaten, as he said there was some great black heavy weights of his time he used to spar with and that were very good.
