What is the story on Hector Camacho? Camacho has a good record, and was never knocked out, I think, but I hardly ever see anything about him on the forums. How good was Hector Camacho? Just wondering.

Comacho was another guy who did not want to fight. Rarely went forward, and to top it off he was south paw........Nobody would fight him in his prime, the early 80's. He was a boring to watch. He was safety first. He was quick of hand & foot, and a good boxer for a southpaw, but lacked real power. The only good thing he ever did was KO Ray Leonard in Ray's last fight......Even Leonard could not believe he was KO'd by Comacho. Ray said after the fight, that since he was KO'd by "Hector Comacho" it was surely time to go......thank you Hecter.

The best part about Hector was the trunks he wore. I liked the leapord spotted ones or tiger striped ones.....and listening to him talk smack after the fights....It is Macho time!!

Camacho was the biz in his early career: lightning fast, aggressive and slick. He romped to a world title at super-featherweight with a dazzling stoppage win over Bazooka Limon (not many stop him), and outclassed Jose Luis Ramirez in a world title crack at lightweight. It all looked so good for the former New York car thief (he did a spell in Rikers as a teenager). Then Edwin Rosario rocked him to his boots at Madison Square Garden, and The Macho Man, though he scraped home on points, was never macho again. He became a runner, scared to get hurt. He stayed that way for the rest of his disappointing career.
He was recently arrested after breaking into a computer shop to reclaim his own computer (being fixed). He was so drunk, he relieved himself in the shop.

Thanks for the input guys. I was just wondering. I remember Camacho when he first started, and he looked pretty good to me at that point in his career, from what I saw. His rercord looks good, so I wondered why he is hardly ever mentioned anyplace.

Well is it the same guy making a comeback on the same bill as his son?

... and less confidence. How many times was Daddy knocked down? I say none but I have heard that he was knocked down twice. By whom and when? Probably in the last few years as he's well over the hill, eh?

Hector Camacho was the trashtalker of the 80's. He had speed, good defense, stamina, but his punching power was not great, neither was his offensive ability. However, he was a bit of a showman and he did always wear some weird trunks. He beat an old Duran and an old Leonard. He was pummeled by Chavez and later Trinidad as well as De La Hoya. He was a good fighter overall but everyone seemed to forget him after Puerto Rico's young Felix Trinidad came into the boxing world.

As regards to the Leonard fight, was he actually knocked out or was it a TKO....Was Ray down for the full ten seconds???

I just watched it so I could give you the answer correctly. It was a TKO in the 5th rd after Hector knocked Leonard down in the same round with 2 left hooks to his head.
I forgot about Camacho's silly costumes he wore. In this fight he's dressed to the nines as a Roman soldier.

Though I'll admit I've never liked Hector Camacho, he was an outstanding fighter at Super Featherweight. His performance in winning his first world title against Rafael "Bazooka" Limon was down right awesome. As he moved up in weight however, he became notoriously contact shy, and received a couple of questionable decision victories against Edwin Rosario and Ray Mancini. To his credit though, he has gone the distance with Chavez, Trinidad and DeLaHoya.

Camacho is not getting his due here. Forget about the clowning and buffoonery, which is all he's got left now; Camacho in his prime as a Jr Light and lightweight was an arguably hall of fame level fighter beating notables such as Edwin Rosario, Boza Edwards,Howard Davis, Boozoka Limon
Jose luis Ramirez, Greg Haugan,Vinny Panzienza, Ray Mancini and a lot of other very good fighter.
except for Mancini and possibly Limon (who was still champion however) he fought these fighters in their absolute prime. His first real loss was to Chavez; you can throw out that absurd loss to Haugen in their first fight where a point was deducted because Camacho did not want to touch gloves.
By the time camacho fought trinidad he was already 14 years into his career and 2 or 3 weights above his best.

While I really enjoyed watching Hector box, I always felt he avoided some tough opposition at the time. And I had Haugen winning that fight closely. I'd always felt that with all Camacho's talent, he could have been dominant.

He was a southpaw, and he was safety first...that doesn't build a fan base.
