Hearns plans comeback at age 46
By Clive Bernath: According to local newspaper The Detroit News former multi weight world champion and ring legend Tommy Hearns is making a comeback at the age of 46.
Hearns, who compiled an incredible 59-5-1- (46), slate over a 23 year period and won world titles at five different weights-is planning to fight again within the next couple of months.
An official announcement is expected on July 1 but Hearns told his local newspaper: "There's a lot of fire built up inside of me," Hearns said Wednesday. "It's the same way it was when I started boxing.
"It's inside of me because I feel this is what I want to do to make myself happy and better myself."
"I feel very strongly about what I'm doing," Hearns continued. "I'm going to have to give 120 or 130 percent to be successful. I look forward to it."
'The Hitman' as he was known in his fighting days, was one of the most exciting boxers ever to lace on a pair of gloves and his battles with undisputed middleweight king Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard are now legendry and embedded firmly
If Hearns dos in fact fight again it will most likely be at 180lbs on the same as his undefeated middleweight son Ronald, who has so far compiled a 6-0 record.

I very much doubt he will pass the medical examinations juding by his appearance, he looks more spaced out than Ali.

It's a damn shame that one time greats risk their reps and health like this.
Tommy appears to be barely over the line of having his faculties mostly intact.
If he wants to stay busy why can't he train, keep in shape in the gym and spar a little with the guys coming up who i'm sure worship the ground he walks on.
I hope this isn't about money because surely there is very very little there for a 46 year old Hearns these days.

This is another case of fighters having to be protected from themselves. Same with Holyfield
I don't buy into the crap about " if they are passed medically fit....." In boxing there are plenty of sleazeballs around wanting to make a buck off a famous name with no consideration for their welfare that they can always find a quack to give a report and a commission to give a licence.
appropo of nothing, the term "quack" originates in the London of the 1600's when Black death was raging. Phoney "Dr's" would go around offering cures that never worked. To ward off the plague, they wore long masks stuffed with herbs. They looked a little like duck beaks and the name came from there

Very disturbing... Tommy seems to be more deluded than Holifield in terms of what he is still capable of in the ring, when I saw him interviewed recently he seemed to barely able to hold a conversation... having said that I'm sure he will manage to 'pass' the medical and be allowed to walk further down the road to ending up like Jerry Quarry. :x :x :x

I have tp agree, I would really hate to se such a great and exciting warrior like Hearns end up like Quarry, Young or Page.
Boxing is one serious addictive drug, which is fine if your on the safe side of the ropes but highly dangerous if your the one getting punched in the head.
From what I have heard, been told and read Tommy Hearns is a total gentleman outside the ring. I read an interview with Marvin Hagler a few years ago and The Marvelous One said "I love Tommy he is a class act".
Don't do it Mr Hearns.

The sad thing is that Tommy doesn't seem to be satisfied with what he acheieved during his heyday, ...I don't think he realises that many boxing fans veiw him with more esteem than they do Leonard and perhaps even Hagler. If he fights again the least he risks is dulling his legend which really has happened already to a certain extent due to his last couple of fights (his bout in Manchester a few years back was very sad with people even walking out!) ...but the biggest risk he is talking is perhaps ending up like Quarry or Greg Page.... let it go Tommy!.

Interesting, personally I regard Leonard and Hagler with more esteem than Hearns.

My comment regarded Hearns popularity and rep as a real warrior... I've never heard of Hearns dictating the size of the ring, types of gloves, weight of opponent etc. I'm sure Hearns would beat Leonard in a popularity contest and he may well pip Hagler too imo.

Leonard is more popular among non-boxing fans...
But among real boxing fans, Hearns is up there with Louis and Robinson in terms of popularity and admiration.

Its a sad fact that many people don't seem willing to save a good person from themselves but are more than happy to make a bit more money out of that person or watch them get embarrassed on TV...... etc... perhaps Flawed Genius is a promoter himself... ofcourse he doesn't care if Hearns gets hurt or humiliated, after all he isn't going to be picking up his hospital/medical bills or visiting him in the nursing home but I bet you'll still be watching his fights from the 80s while stuffing your face with Big Macs and Budwisers eh flawed :x :x :x
