Another boxer dies in the ring

Super lightweight Martin Sanchez sadly passed away Saturday morning after a boxing match Friday night at the Orleans Casino in Las Vegas. "Guilty Boxing is deeply saddened by the passing of Martin Sanchez," said Jeff Grmoja, vice president of boxing operations for Guilty Boxing. "I want to commend all the physicians who and staff which worked so diligently on behalf of Martin. On the behalf of the entire Guilty Boxing family, I want to extend our condolences and offer our prayers to Martin's family." Sanchez was stopped by technical knockout in the ninth round by Rustam Nugaev. After congratulating Nugaev and acknowledging the applause from the crowd, Sanchez left the ring under his own power.

Never heard of the guy tbh but sad day for boxing. I wish his family the best :(

I know, that is just terrible irony. Very sad. Even if there was some underlying problem there, the other boxer must feel absolutely awful when something like this happens

A sad loss. I'm sure most of you on here know, but Guilty Boxing bills are shown quite often on BEN, Channel 184 (I think).
The cards are filled with Hispanic triers and the fights are invariably excellent, a world away from the shite six-rounders which fill up most British small hall shows.

On this subject are there any more practical things that could be done to enhance the safety of the sport? There is always going to be an element of danger when 2 guys are hitting each other around the head but I think some of the most problematic areas can only be controlled by the fighters and his team, such as sensible weight-loss, training right and avoiding dehydration.

I don't know if this was the case here, but I think in quite a few of these instances it turns out that the deceased, or seriously damaged, fighter, had some sort of condition which was in effect a time bomb if you were a boxer.
Was it something like an 'eggshell' skull - an overly thin skull - that was mentioned here not long ago? I think it was said though that it could only be detected in a post-mortem.
I think there may sadly always be 'freak' cases like this which will occur.

You sometimes hear calls for the introduction of headguards to pro boxing after a somebody gets hurt. I think I am right though in saying research has shown that headguards do not really reduce the cumulative effects of blows to the head, and they are used in amateur boxing more to reduce the likelihood of cuts. The real reason behind the difference between the number of amateur and pro fatalities is probably just the difference in rounds, and the more punishing style of the pro's.
