Valero scores 14th straight 1st round KO win

Controversial 130-pound prospect Edwin Valero extended his undefeated record and streak of first-round KOs to 14-0 (14) with a 75-second blowout of rugged Colombian journeyman Esteban de Jesus Morales last night on a card held at the Gimnasio Roberto Duran in Panama City, Panama. Morales, who had gone the distance with former WBO featherweight titlist Julio Pablo Chacon and former WBU lightweight title holder Colin Dunne in previous fights, dropped to 24-9-1 (14).

This is the second victory for Valero, who was placed on medical suspension by the New York State Athletic Commission for failing a pre-fight medical exam in January of 2004, since leaving the United States (where he was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and managed by Joel De La Hoya Sr.) earlier this year.

Do you know why he failed the pre-fight medical?

He has a soft spot on his head somewhere which is said to be from a motorcycle accident.

Let's be honest though he isn't fighting good fighters becasue anyone good would get on their bike for the first ROUND at least to avoid being another statistic...

Valero is a monster! He punches unlike anyone! This last guy that he beat had been the distance against several top fighters and had only been stopped by TKO back in 1998, Valero put him out by KO!

Anyone can be like "a monster" against someone who doesn't hit back.

No shit Sherlock, but show me any one else in history that has blasted out opponents in the same manner, even guys who fought nothing but bums have not been able to do what Valero has!

Some things stand out

- Valero has serious power. That's undeniable.
- He's fighting well-picked guys because he can't afford not to - his knockout streak is what keeps him in the headlines and keeps his case prominent.
- Sparking 14 guys in the first round straight is the basic stat of someone who's not being moved fast enough. Fair play to him but that's not a murderers' row of opponents, is it. Morales was by some way his toughest opponent and we saw him over here having a decent fight which he lost to Colin Dunne 3 years ago. He's not won since then either.

Valero advocates are making the same noises Hatton advocates were doing five years ago. But Jon Thaxton is / was streets better than anyone Valero's been in with. Never mind, though, at least Valero's working out of the US...

Stick him in with Kev Mitchell

He would murder Kev Mitchell. (Or is that why you would want to see him in there with him?!) Kev Mitchell isn't turning out to be quite as powerful as people thought he was initially, the KO's have dried up.

though in fairness John he has broken his hands in his last two fights its 3 only fights since he had a ko, its pretty hard to ko people with broken hands.

Kevin even said himself, he doesnt think he is an out and out banger.

its normal not to ko so many when you step in class and bonafai while being limited was still a step up, combine that with the fact his knuckles on his right hand were swollen to all hell when he was wandering about ringside the ring later on in the evening v chakim. (elephant and castle chas v minter fight).

He actually had chakim all done by about the 3rd I remember turnign to Kev and saying he will ko him in the 3rd after the first round but i think thats when he suffered hand damage and coasted for the rest of the fight.

He has taken time out now i beilve to let his hands heal fully. Be intersting to see how he goes when he returns.

I had heard he had something wrong with his hands but didn't know he was breaking them. I actually like to see the kid fight but haven't seen his last couple of bouts. Hopefully he'll do well, if anything he's exciting to watch.

he was supposed to be on the Brodie V Harirson undercard mate, but pulled out through the injuries.,

he is actually a really nice kid to talk to outside the ring.

got a mate at work who knows his brother very well Vinnie, ill try and found out when he is due to return and post here. :TU:

Im not going to bash Mitchell. But I have to say the guys he has fought are some of the worst I have ever seen. The fact that he's not stopping these guys, broken hand or no broken hand suggests he is not a puncher in the slightest.

come on thats a bit harsh, guys is sitll a kid and his opponenet before last bonafai is a decent enough challenge at this stage for a 20 yr old.

seasoned guy been in with limond a few fights before and jamie arthur the fight before that, fought begue aswell for the frnech title took em all the distance....some of the others i agree but he was despatching these guys in 2 rounds.

brodie did spark him in 5 though and rutherford in 4 but as i say hand injury might make the difference agianst that calibre of opponent at this juncture of his career.

remember that albanian character (or form some war-torn bizzare country) mitchell fought, he was absolute bobbins, i seriously reckon I could have beaten him.

The guy that Valero just took out was a step up and the same result occurred. Of course it's common sense in knowing that it will not last forever, but even the sun shines on total punching bags, even against the best, but Valero has not allowed it yet and the way that he is destroying this level of fighters, he should have no problem when he moves up to better class, other than he won't score all first round jobs all the time.

IF it was a step up, the guy wouldn't have come out with an attacking frame of mind, he would defend. Anyone with ANY gameplan would do this...

Anyway, time will tell..

But that's the point. Gym talk says he's handy but in the ring he's looking for one-round KOs. That's habit-forming and if you're going in against a decent boxer, it's not a great habit...

I hope the lad makes it, and I hope he does it healthily. Just that after years of being pooh-poohed about the viability of Ricky Hatton, the mirror situation seems to be happening...

Valero was scheduled to take on Francisco Lorenzo the day his license was suspended. Your statement is full of rubbish.

Cassiani also got blasted in 1 by this guy. deal with the truth.

A fighter with aspirations and a good defence seems likely to give this guy a bit of a jolt back down to earth, much like our own Nigel Benn did with Watson, of course, Watson was a world class operator, and not many people were able to live with Nige long enough to take him into deep water, and when they did, found that Nige had his water wings on.
