Interesting match up... depends on which Quarry turns up, at his best Jerry would have been too mobile and quick for Martin but if Jerry went toe to toe with Leotis it would be a mistake I think.
I haven't seen as much of Martin as I have of Quarry but he seems to have had a good jab and heavy punch but was a little plodding and slow footwise.... simular in style really to Ron Lyle who Quarry outpointed in perhaps his best effort.
Yeah, I edge to Quarry but it'd be a toughie... shame Leotis had to give up the game prematurely just as he had made it into the big time with the Liston win.

Excuse me if I'm 'over simplifying' (an occaisional shortcoming)...but I'd like to point out some of the 'prospects' that were derailed by Jerry Quarry...guys like Mac Foster, Larry Middleton, Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers...Styles make fights, every fight is different...But I think Quarry would win...he only lost to the top fighters of his day...Martin wasn't as good as Ali/Frazier, etc...Quarry was tough and had as much as or more heart that any fighter I ever saw...Martin would have to fight the best fight of his career to win...

I agree but think Martin was a dangerous fighter who we probably didn't see the best of due to his shortened career he'd have given Jerry a run for his money I think and Jerry would need to be on form.

Yea, I see it pretty much the same as you guys. If Quarry can successfully box the taller Lyle from the outside, I'd imagine he could do the same with Martin, who - from what I've seen of him - didn't look as alert in exchanging as Ron did.
Leotis may swell up late and Quarry could score heavily, may rock him if he couldn't see the punches coming.
I agree with silkov, though: Quarry would need to be 'switched on'. Getting into a dog fight with Martin is not the way you wanna go when fighting him, no matter who you are...

Just for the record the only reason Leotis had that W over Liston was that he was such a well known quantity to him. He had the best chance of just about anyone to solve the riddle that was Sonny. The hours these two spent sparring is very high. Sonny would have and did beat him up 8 out of 10 sparring session.
With no insider trading secrets to exploit Leotis does not fare well with Jerry. Leotis does not make it to hear the last bell.
