McGuigan-Cowdell

This one could have happened. The two men's careers overlaped.

McGuigan had great stamina and was an all action come forward fighter. Cowdell went the distance with Sanchez and was a cagey boxer. Barry was by far the harder hitter, but Pat had the better defence.

Cowdell did seem to be susceptible to an early KO as evidenced by Nelson, but he was a much better fighter than that result suggested. He was just too dry going in. Nelson would probably have won their fight even if Pat had warmed himself into the first few rounds BUT Pat was no pushover.

Any thoughts on this bout and why it didn't happen.

Barry McGuigan....the great Irish hope/dope. He had to fight Pedroza in Ireland, or he would have never won the title. Then 2 fights after winning the title, he gets his ASS broke by Steve Cruz.....Then he whines after the fight about how it was too hot fighting in the desert........What an over rated cry baby.... Thankfully he just fades into the used be champion abyss......never to be heard from again. :TU:

It's a bit harsh ringsider...

Barry always gave his best in the ring. He lost his way when he allowed his brother to get too involved in his career. His efforts to claw his way back into the Cruz fight were commendable. he put the work in down the stretch and (on my card) got his nose back in front only to be bounced around in the 15th. I thought he he showed great fighting spirit.

I do think Barry had to be in peak 100% fitness to figth and he was a reknown gym fanatic. I think he had the money and the endorsements and training was not so excitign anymore. He should have got right abck in the ring a few months later.

I realise you have your opinions on the man so please share them. Barry was a popular fighter with the public and could give anyone a fight. He wasn't the greatest, but why the animosity

Barry McGuigan was an exponent of the hit the body the head will fall style and it worked ask Bernard Taylor.

That day in Vegas against Cruz, well Barry's corner alledgedly lost his water bottle after round 10, and he dehydrated between then and round 14. He was still ahead on points on two judges cards and level on the other going into the final round.

However he was bounced off the canvas twice in the 15th therfore losing that round by 3 points on ALL cards.

If the fight had been in the evening or Barry hadn't dehydrated he would have won that fight, why wasn't there a rematch. Under anyother circumstance Steve Cruz would possibly have lost by KO to Barry.

Two legal suits with Barney Eastwood subsequently left Barry penniless.

Hence the reason he now does TV work to regain some cash to live.
