I HAVNT HEARD ANYONE TALK ABOUT HIM. this guy is underated, and is in my top 20 list. everyone seems to neglect him and never talk about him but he was a smart counter puncher with a good right hand. perhaps since he was german during a bad time in germany he wasnt as popular with americans.

what do u guys think of him?? how do u rate him????

i thought he beat sharkey in both fights. the first he won by DQ and the 2nd was a highly questionable decision for sharkey. max also gave mickey walkker a beating flooring hiom 7 times. this was the same mickey walker who battled jack sharkey to a draw. MAX ALSO HANDED JOE LOUIS IS FIRST AND ONLY PRIME LOSS. MAX FIGURED IHM OUT AND EXPOSED JOE UNLIKE MAX BAER. JOE TOOK MAX LIGHTLY AND MAX NAILED HIM THAT NIGHT WITH ABOUT 500 RIGHTS. LOUIS SHOWED A LOT OF HEART STAYING IN THEIR TILL THE 12TH.

HES MOST KNOWN FOR TAking the worst beating in history of heavywheight division when he lost a rematch to louis in one round. his back was nearly broken and he was floored 4 times on louis' peak night.

he also suffered a vicous battering from max baer who knocked out schmelling in the 10th.

i think he is underated though by many who seem to never talk about him. what do u guys think of him?????

Brockton, don't be so dramatic. You're calling Schmeling-Louis the worst beating in the history of the heavyweight division. Have you seen Dempsey-Willard? Dempsey-Willard was much worse.

And why are you saying Louis took Schmeling lightly? Louis fought well, but Schmeling was smart enough to see that Louis dropped his hand down to his waist after firing a jab instead of keeping his hand up. Schmeling figured he could land right hands in that small window of time and did it. Give Schmeling all the credit for winning and studying his opponent, and don't make excuses for Joe Louis. Schmeling was the better fighter that night, and better at that point of both fighters' careers.

Schmeling was unpopular at times for several reasons. He was roundly criticized for rolling around and winning the heavyweight title on a DQ. He beat the popular Joe Louis, hyped up by the Jacobs PR machine. He was roundly perceived to be an extension of Hitler and Germany, although that was absolutely untrue.

I think Schmeling is an All-Time Top 20-25 heavyweight. If he had decisively beaten Sharkey either time or dominated in his defense against Young Stribling, he would probably be thought of higher than he is. But he was a great man and he is a model to all fighters of how to keep your money after your ring days are over. He became one of the wealthiest men in Germany. He sent a lot of money over to Joe Louis and did it privately. I was hoping he could make it to 100, but he died at 99.

He's a top 20 HW, maybe even top 15.

He was a very smart fighter and possesed fast hands and a great right hand counter. He could also throw a could left jab when he wanted and could take a hell of a punch.

His faults was that his style didn't have enough side to side movement, in the traditional Euro-style he just went backwards and forwards most of the time, dragging his back foot.

nahh

i grant SCHMELLING FOR COMING UP WITH AN INCDREDIBLE GAME PLAN AND FINDING LOUIS' FLAW. BUT I THINK LOUIS ALSO WAS HURTING HIMSELF. LOUIS WASNT TRAINING AS HARD, AND STOPPED IGNORING BLACKBURNS ADVICE. LOUIS HAD KNOCKED OUT MAX BAER WHO HAD BRUTALLY KNOCKED OUT SCHEMLLING. LOUIS PROB THOUGHT MAX WASNT GOING TO BE MUCH OF A CHALLENGE.

BLACKBURN IN THE FIGHT SAID TO NOT LET THAT LEFT ARM DOWN AFTER U JAB, louis said later "god i wish i had listened to him".

well when ur able to stand over a man and hit him when immediately when he gets up i htink thats cheap. dempsey was allowed to do that against willard. ALSO, louis was able to fracture a bone in schmellings back with one punch and LOUIS FINISHED THE FIGHT WITH A LOT LESS PUNCHES THAN DEMPSEY DID AND DISHED OUT NEARLY AS MUCH DAMAGE. DEMPSEY HIT HIM 100 TIMES IN THE 1ST ROUND AND STILL COULDNT PUT WILLIARD OUT. if louis landed that many punches on williard, i think willard would be dead.

i will say this. THAT FIGHT DID SLIP MY MIND AND OVERALL SINCE, I WILL GIVE IT TO U THAT DEMPSEY WILLARD WAS THE WORST BEATING AND I WILL SAY I BELIEVE DEMPSEY DID NOT HAVE CEMENT IN HIS GLOVES.

IF DEMPSEY DID PUT SHIT IN HIS GLOVES WILLARD WOULD BE DEAD. DEMPSEY LANDED SO MANY HARD BLOWS IN THE FIRST ROUND, IF HE HAD SHIT IN HIS GLOVES WILLARD WOULD HAVE DIED. BECAUSE HE WAS GETTING HIT TOO HARD.

Dempsey was just following the rules at the time, so it wasn't cheap. You can't blame him for the rules of the time. Of course the rule was changed, and it hurt him in the second Tunney fight.

Good points about Louis, but I think that since people consider Louis the #1 or 2 greatest heavyweight of All-Time, they tend to discredit the win and say he was taking Schmeling easy and I hate to take credit away from Schmeling for what he did. According to NY Times articles leading to the fight, Louis was in excellent shape, at a good weight, and looked terrific in sparring.
This was a Yankee Stadium extravanganza with 45,000 fans. A likely title shot against Braddock was on the line. I highly doubt that, as dedicated a fighter as Louis is, he would take Schmeling lightly. It's not like Louis has a history of giving less than his best.

yeah Louis himself said one day he looked great in sparring knocking out out two sparring partners. he had peaked. only problem is it was five days before the fight. the day before the fight i believe he played golf against blackburns advice. it was schmellings day, and he came up with the game plan and i give him 100 % credit for the win, but louis was hurting himself. he was asking for it to happen

You would have to see the first Schmeling Louis fight to appreciate how brilliantluy he fought that night. It wasn't just that Louis dropped his left its that there were no punches except his left and the Schmeling right. I don't think Max threw a left until the 8th or so, and Louis threw no combinations. Then note Schmeling's defense, how he anticipated each Louis counter to that right- The right uppercut, a left hook to the body and so on- it was sticking to a plan and convincing a future greartest of them all to go along with it.
