Which fighters would you say had the best chins?..... Kid Gavilan, Henry Armstrong, Carmen Basilo....... are a few I can think of... :box:

Hagler had a great chin. McCallum too. Chavez was solid as well. I don't remember him getting dropped at the lower weights he fought at. Leonard ahd a great china at welter but it abandoned him pretty quickly once he moved up the weights.

Ali and Holmes both had stout chins. Ali especially, as he went in with some big bangers.

Yeah, Ali had one of the best chins of all the haevyweight champions imo... withstood the bombs of shavers even when he was well past his best and stood up to the biggest shots that Holmes could dish out.

Harry Greb, Freddie Miller and Mickey Walker are three more that come to mind... all had iron chins... Greb was only stopped when he had a broken arm and both Walker and Miller got stopped at the end of their careers... both were koed in their last fights I think.

Hagler.

How he ate Hearns' right hands or that evil uppercut from Mugabi (4th round) and didn't even blink, is beyond my mind.

Very true.

Hagler was astonishing.

I don't know what he had in his jaw, but it wasn't bone! :o :box: :box: :box: :TU:

I think there is one active fighter that belongs and that is Wayne McCullough. He has taken bombs from fighters like Hamed and Morales without ever going down. And even past his prime, he was tattooed by Scott Harrison and Oscar Larios with loads of flush punches and still didn't go down.

Another active fighter that has a good chin is Erik Morales.

He had a good chin, but I don't know if it was one of the best ever. In Duran's prime at lightweight, DeJesus dropped him in 2 separate fights. And then when he went up in weight...Hearns destroyed him.

But Hearns was an all timer as a puncher and Duran took bombs from Leonard, Hagler, ...Barkley.... the knockdowns vs Dejesus were very quick and Duran was up like a flash.... I'd still say he had a great chin.

Tex Cobb...George Chuvalo at the top of the list...

Julio Ceasar Chavez...remember the Meldrick Taylor fight as a classic example?

Jake LaMotta and Hagler...

...and I know I'll get pounded for this, but...Sugar Ray Leonard...

Watch the Hearns I and Duran I fights...he could take a punch...

Tex Cobb could really take a pounding...it was his best attribute...if fights were 50 rounds, Tex and Chuvalo would have both been champions...

Forgot to mention Ali...how could I have done that???

Stop thinking about the classics boxers. How about ricardo mayorga, trinidad never put him down for the count even after all the beating he gave mayorga. Mayorga must also be pretty self confident about his chin, he wanted trinidad to hit the hell out of him :box:

ricardo mayorga is up their with the best chins

I believe Chuvalo retired from boxing without ever leaving his feet. Not bad for a guy who had a ton of fights, many against the best fighters of a powerful era.

Just off the top of my head, I've got to go with Chuvalo and Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Someone mentioned Carmen Basillio, too. He's got to be in the discussion. What an asset to be able to go into a fight having that kind of ability to absorb punches, in case you ever found yourself in the need.

Too bad Hearns didn't have that ability. A Hagler chin on a Hearns and who knows ... maybe Tommy would be up near the top of all the "all time greatest" lists.

Jim Jeffries probably had a chin not worse than Chuvalo (only down and stopped after a ill-advised come-back and being very out of shape).
