Only had 1 pro fight so far. It was against a limited opponent so it was difficult to tell. He will fight again in september & october.

Did his final opponent the well named Eygiption Muhammed Ali look any good?

I never saw one of Alys fights from the olympics. I saw him at the copenhagen box cup a couple of years back where he won a 19-17 decision in the semi final over David Price.

The Egyptian was awful, Povetkin wuld have killed him but he couldn't fight. I think Ali broke his hand or something and Povetkin won the final by walk over. Povetkin is a strong pressure fighter who dominated the amateur scene the last three years. He won though a controversial decision at the 2003 World championships over Cuban giant Pedro Carrion. I'm sure Universum will guide Povetkin to some title but don't expect him to be the savior of the division.

Just a small note, he is with Sauerland like Hernandez also is.

He's looked pretty good in his first pro fight, although I don't think he'll have the same success in the pro's as he did in the amateurs.

The sad thing is he might not need to be anything special. If he proves to be fairly strong and durable with enough skills to beat half-decent fighters he can still be a feature of the division with the a German promoter behind him. If you look at the long-term radar for the HW division, ie the guys who might be around at the top in 4 years time, then there really is nothing much coming. :(

Apart from Cubans there are not Many Amateurs who have done what Povetkin has done & with the poor state of the division he can clear up all the Belts.

He is very strong and has the ambition to fight. Bet your money and your house on him now!

With that I agree, if Jirov himself has a little less mileage and a little bigger (which Potekivin has) then I'm sure he would have held a version of the world title.

He probably will win a version of the title, but a Mike Tyson esque saviour he isn't.

Another win for Povetkin, who is now 3-0. The opponents so far have little weight, height or experience behind them, although it is only the start of his career.

Povetkin moves up to 6 rounds when he fights American Ricardo Carter (6-0) on the Sam-Maskaev bill in a fortnight's time.

remember having an argument with someone on eastside about povetkin. remember him from the olympics and he just didn't strike me as having a pro style.

one to keep an eye on but that's all.

whats his record now... and what division he sounds interesting, i barely remember watchign him during the olympics.

His pro record? He's 3-0. He turned professional this year after winning the 2004 olympic gold (super-heavy.) I think the concensus from those that have seen him is that he's nothing special, but considering the state of the heavyweight div today, that could take him pretty far

I still dont agree with the "nothing special". As Amateur he was really good, one of the best in the last decade. No superheavyweight have ever won as much as he have.
I have seen two of his pro fights, and he have looked pretty good there.

Sorry about that. Looking back just at this thread I can see "nothing special" is a bit harsh.

I should change that to "it's early days" or "he has potential"

I'd certainly say he'll be involved in world titles, and I've not even seen him yet

Of course he hasnt shown anything as a pro, but he has still only had 3 fights. Lets see when he is 10-0.

He may ne on Eurosprt tonight as they are showing the Valuev v Donald bill according to the TV scheduel enyway.

His fight were shown.

Saw Povetkin on Eurosport just now - I was actually pretty impressed. The other guy knew the rudimentaries and had an ok jab and handspeed, but once Povetkin started to land (after 20 seconds) it was a mismatch.

Thought Povetkin should good timing coming forward and his defence was not bad. He was quite vicious I thought.

I think he will do really well, though looked a little flabby.

Kind of reminded me physically of what Hatton would look like with 3 months of eating....


Also thought Vauev def deserved to win against Donald abd agreed with Steve Holdsworth's scoreline.
